BJP leaders and workers during a 'Tiranga Yatra' at Chandni Chowk in New Delhi on Monday. (PTI) Starting from Red Fort's ramparts, and culminating at Fatehpuri, the celebration drew participation from women, youth, workers, and the local trading community and turned the bustling market area into a sea of tricolours. Shopfronts, rooftops, and street corners along the route were decorated with the national flag and the yatra was accompanied by bands, drums, shehnais, and trumpets. Local market associations and RWAs lined the route, showering flowers on the participants. Slogans such as 'Har Gali – Har Mohalla, Har Dil Mein Tiranga Laharaye' and 'Tiranga Aan Bharat Ki – Tiranga Shaan Bharat Ki' echoed throughout, underscoring the unity and pride of the gathering. Khandelwal described the yatra as 'a reflection of deep respect and unwavering commitment to our national flag.' He linked the event to the 'Bharatiya Samaan – Hamara Swabhiman' campaign under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it a decisive step towards promoting indigenous products and self-reliance. SP members stage walkout from Parishad over schools' pairing
1 2 Lucknow: Govt's decision to pair primary schools with low attendance led to fireworks in the Vidhan Parishad on Monday, with the Samajwadi Party accusing the BJP of violating the principle of the Right to Education. The party staged a walkout in the middle of basic education minister Sandeep Singh's response to the discussion, alleging that the BJP was turning the education sector into a business. SP's Ashutosh Sinha said, according to data provided to the Lok Sabha recently, between 2017-18 and 2023-24, about 26,040 govt schools in UP were either closed or paired. Against a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:20, there were 8,866 primary schools having only a single teacher in each, and these schools had 611,950 registered children. Calling this a conspiracy by the govt to avoid new recruitments, Sinha said that the chief secretary admitted to the Supreme Court that 308,316 posts of teachers in upper primary schools were vacant. Leader of Opposition in Parishad Lal Bihari Yadav alleged that differences between private and council schools resulted in low enrolment in govt schools. "Admission to private schools starts at 3 years while at govt schools it is 5 years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Prices May Surprise You) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo It should not matter if there are 50 or 5 children in a school. The govt should strive to ensure the best education for all children. Books are not available, and a change in school timings has ensured that at 1.30 pm, when schools give over, children have to walk back in the heat," he said. In response, Singh said the pairing of schools would not impact any child. "The pairing is being done to improve group and peer learning and learning outcomes among children. When children sit together and learn, it encourages discussion among them, and learning is better," he said. He stated that if children find it difficult to reach schools after the merger, the schools will not be paired. The minister added that pairing schools will also increase the availability of teachers. He explained that schools with higher enrolment get more composite grants and therefore have better facilities. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). In opposing land-pooling policy, Punjab BJP took the opportunity to mend fences with farmers
1 2 Chandigarh: Having faced massive backlash over the three controversial farm laws, which were eventually repealed by the BJP-led central govt, the Punjab BJP leadership saw an opportunity in the controversial land pooling policy of the AAP-led govt in Punjab to mend fences with farmers by opposing the policy tooth and nail. The anger against the BJP leaders over the three farm laws could be gauged from the fact that alleged activists of farm unions protested by chasing and tearing the clothes of then BJP MLA from Abohar, Arun Narang, in Malout town of Muktsar district in March 2021, around eight months before the Centre announced the repeal of the farm laws. In October 2020, the vehicle of Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma (who was Punjab BJP chief at that time) was attacked at a toll plaza in Hoshiarpur, where farmers were holding a protest. The anger against the BJP did not subside even after the laws were repealed, and BJP candidates in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls continued to face protests, particularly in rural areas. The party failed to win a single seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and at the receiving end in rural areas were its candidates, such as famous singer Hans Raj Hans, (now a union minister of state) Ravneet Singh Bittu, and former IAS officer Parampal Kaur Sidhu, among others. It was no surprise then that the BJP saw the controversy over the land pooling policy as a platform to strike a chord with the farmers by opposing it tooth and nail, and an opportunity to find its feet in rural Punjab ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. After its over two-decades long alliance with the SAD broke over the farm laws in 2020, the BJP, predominantly a party with support base from urban areas, has been eyeing to make inroads into the rural areas as well. On August 6, the Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a state-wide yatra, "Save Land, Save Farmers," from August 17 to September 5 against the policy, under the leadership of its working president Ashwani Sharma.
