In opposing land-pooling policy, Punjab BJP took the opportunity to mend fences with farmers
2
Chandigarh: Having faced massive backlash over the three controversial farm laws, which were eventually repealed by the BJP-led central govt, the Punjab BJP leadership saw an opportunity in the controversial land pooling policy of the AAP-led govt in Punjab to mend fences with farmers by opposing the policy tooth and nail.
The anger against the BJP leaders over the three farm laws could be gauged from the fact that alleged activists of farm unions protested by chasing and tearing the clothes of then BJP MLA from Abohar, Arun Narang, in Malout town of Muktsar district in March 2021, around eight months before the Centre announced the repeal of the farm laws.
In October 2020, the vehicle of Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma (who was Punjab BJP chief at that time) was attacked at a toll plaza in Hoshiarpur, where farmers were holding a protest.
The anger against the BJP did not subside even after the laws were repealed, and BJP candidates in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls continued to face protests, particularly in rural areas. The party failed to win a single seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and at the receiving end in rural areas were its candidates, such as famous singer Hans Raj Hans, (now a union minister of state) Ravneet Singh Bittu, and former IAS officer Parampal Kaur Sidhu, among others.
It was no surprise then that the BJP saw the controversy over the land pooling policy as a platform to strike a chord with the farmers by opposing it tooth and nail, and an opportunity to find its feet in rural Punjab ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. After its over two-decades long alliance with the SAD broke over the farm laws in 2020, the BJP, predominantly a party with support base from urban areas, has been eyeing to make inroads into the rural areas as well.
On August 6, the Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a state-wide yatra, "Save Land, Save Farmers," from August 17 to September 5 against the policy, under the leadership of its working president Ashwani Sharma.

Akhilesh slams BJP after Hindu groups vandalise centuries-old tomb in Fatehpur
New Delhi: Akhilesh slams BJP after Hindu groups vandalise centuries-old tomb in FatehpurSamajwadiParty chief Akhilesh Yadav has sharply criticised the BJP following fresh tensions in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, where Hindu groups vandalised a tomb, claiming it was originally a temple. In a statement, Yadav accused the BJP of pursuing divisive politics, saying, 'Only when society is divided and hatred is spread will the BJP be successful in politics. These people are following an ideology created by the British.' The incident took place at the centuries-old tomb of Nawab Abu Samad. On Monday, a group of Hindu activists staged a protest outside the structure, alleging that it was built after demolishing a Hindu temple. They reportedly sought permission from the district administration to conduct prayers at the site. Video clips circulating on social media show members of Hindu organisations vandalising parts of the mausoleum and hoisting saffron flags on it. The visuals have sparked outrage among the local Muslim community and political opposition. Following the unrest, police deployed tight security around the site to prevent further escalation. The administration is said to be investigating the matter, though tensions remain high. Yadav also pointed out that Fatehpur has witnessed similar communal incidents in the past, recalling that a mosque in the district was earlier demolished for being 'illegal' on the grounds that its construction map had not been approved. He added that in a separate earlier incident, a youth was killed, and action was taken only after considerable public and political pressure. Minister Kapil Dev stated that the Uttar Pradesh administration is fulfilling its responsibilities and emphasised that no individual will be permitted to take the law into their own hands. Minister Nand Kishor Gurjar commented on the controversy surrounding the site, asserting that there was no tomb originally present there. He claimed that the structures were built after the 17th century and linked their existence to the historical persecution of Hindus and the destruction of temples. He acknowledged that the recent vandalism was a reaction to that history, saying, 'Ideally, such actions should have been carried out through proper administrative channels. While those involved were not bad people, the act should have been conducted within the framework of the law.'

US tariffs push Andhra shrimp farmers to the brink, MP seeks urgent relief
Tirupati: Tirupati MP Dr Maddila Gurumoorthy on Monday voiced the mounting distress of thousands of shrimp farmers in the State, telling the Lok Sabha that steep US import duties have crippled exports and sent farm-gate prices tumbling. The slump, he warned, has pushed many farmers into heavy debt and threatens the state's aquaculture sector, a key source of livelihood for lakhs, with severe economic fallout. Dr Gurumoorthy told the Lok Sabha that Andhra Pradesh, which accounts for the lion's share of India's shrimp exports, has been hit hardest. Nearly 70 percent of the state's produce is shipped to the United States, but with Washington imposing an effective tariff of nearly 60 percent, consignments have slowed to a trickle. Tirupati district alone cultivates shrimp in over 28,000 acres, yielding about 1.25 lakh tonnes annually. The MP explained that the trouble began after the US slapped an additional 25 percent import duty – on top of the existing 25 percent coupled with 3.96 percent anti-dumping and 5.76 percent countervailing duties. 'Within two days of the announcement, prices crashed by 10–15 percent,' he said, noting that the 30-count variety has slid from Rs 450 to Rs 400 per kg, while the 50-count variety dropped from Rs 330 to Rs 300. According to industry estimates, Andhra Pradesh has about 6.5 lakh aquafarmers, with another 30–40 lakh people dependent on allied activities such as hatcheries, feed supply, processing, and logistics. Losses are running between Rs 50,000 and Rs 80,000 per tonne, leaving farmers unable to recover even their input costs. Adding to the woes is the absence of adequate cold storage facilities. Farmers are often forced to offload their harvest immediately at distress prices, as holding stock is not feasible. Efforts to divert exports to China or cater to local processors have met with only limited success. Dr Gurumoorthy urged the Centre to intervene with a relief package, price stabilisation measures, and investments in storage infrastructure. He also pressed for a push to open alternative export markets so that the livelihoods of lakhs of coastal families do not sink further.

BJP Telangana gears up for grand Tiranga Yatra celebrations
Hyderabad: The BJP Telangana unit has announced elaborate arrangements for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, with an emphasis on the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and Tiranga Yatras across the state. State BJP president N. Ramchander Rao, addressing the media on Monday, said that the Government of India has been promoting the Har Ghar Tiranga program nationwide for the past five years. This year marks the sixth consecutive year of the initiative. The program encourages citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes and participate in activities that foster a spirit of patriotism. 'In Telangana, we are organizing these events on a massive scale with the participation of state government bodies, voluntary organizations, educational institutions, and other groups,' Rao said, adding that preparations are already underway in every district and mandal. A state-level committee was formed under the leadership of the BJP Telangana State Vice President, Dr. Manohar Reddy, to oversee the Independence Day events. The committee includes MLAs Palvai Harish Babu, party spokesperson Rani Rudrama, BJYM state president Mahender Chevella, and MLC Malka Komuraiah. They will coordinate a series of programs in the run-up to August 15. One of the major highlights will be the Tiranga Rally scheduled for August 14 on Necklace Road in Hyderabad. The rally, expected to draw over 15,000 college students, will be part of a larger series of events across all mandals. The BJP has set an ambitious target of hoisting the tricolour on 14 lakh households across Telangana, with the flags to be lowered respectfully on the evening of August 15. In addition to the rallies, the party will mark Partition Remembrance Day on August 14 with demonstrations, hall meetings, and commemorative programs in all districts. Rao emphasised that these initiatives aim to educate younger generations about the history of India's freedom struggle, the sacrifices made by countless individuals, and the tragic events surrounding the country's partition. 'I appeal to every citizen to take part in these programs, rising above politics, caste, creed, and region, and join hands in celebrating the spirit of our independence,' Rao urged. With an array of cultural, educational, and patriotic events planned, Telangana is set to witness grand celebrations, reinforcing the ideals of unity, freedom, and national pride in the days leading up to Independence Day, he said.
