Maharashtra observed its 65th Foundation Day on Thursday (May 1, 2025) with grand celebrations across the State, highlighting its cultural, historical, and social legacy. Marked annually on May 1, Maharashtra Day commemorates the creation of the State in 1960, following the bifurcation of the erstwhile Bombay state. The State, known for its economic prowess and rich heritage, celebrated the day with a series of events showcasing its contributions to India's progress.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a special message on social media platform X, extended his greetings to the people of Maharashtra and Gujarat, praising the rapid strides made by both States since their formation. He lauded Maharashtra for its vital role in India's growth and described the State's history as one of courage and resilience.
'Maharashtra has always been a strong pillar of progress,' PM Modi said, adding that the State's commitment to development while staying rooted in its cultural heritage had made it a beacon of success.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, addressing the occasion, paid tribute to the martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement at Hutatma Chowk in Mumbai. He emphasized Maharashtra's relentless pursuit of progress, stating, 'Our vision is to make Maharashtra a trillion-dollar economy, continuing the path shown by icons like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar'.
In addition to these tributes, Mr. Fadnavis announced a new 100-day development initiative, details of which are expected to be unveiled soon. The initiative is aimed at accelerating infrastructure development and enhancing the State's economic position.
On the ceremonial front, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar unfurled the national flag at the City Police Headquarters Parade Ground in Pune, while his counterpart Eknath Shinde hoisted it at Saket Maidan in Thane. In Mumbai, former Governor Ramesh Bais joined Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan in flag-hoisting ceremonies, both paying homage to the State's history and its legendary figures, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, freedom fighters such as B.G. Tilak and V.D. Savarkar and reformers such as Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Governor Radhakrishnan also expressed his condolences for the victims of the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people, including a Nepalese national. He praised the Maharashtra government for ensuring the safe return of all stranded tourists from the region.
In a significant policy announcement, Mr. Fadnavis revealed that the Maharashtra Cabinet had approved a new policy aimed at developing the State's shipbuilding, shipbreaking, and ship repair industries. This initiative is expected to boost the State's economy and generate significant employment opportunities. 'This policy will create a new ecosystem in shipbuilding, ship recycling, and ship repair, helping to tap into India's vast potential in this sector,' the Chief Minister stated.
Additionally, the Cabinet made provisions for the families of those from Maharashtra who were killed in the Pahalgam terror attack. The State government will provide a compensation of ₹50 lakh to the families of the deceased, along with a government job for an immediate family member where no earning member is left.
Mr. Fadnavis also officially announced that the daughter of Santosh Jagdale, one of the victims of the attack, would be given a government job as part of the State's support to the grieving families.

Global Universities At Your Doorstep: Five Foreign Institutions Set To Open Campuses In Navi Mumbai

Campuses In Navi Mumbai: In a major step towards making Mumbai a global education hub, the University Grants Commission (UGC), in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, handed over Letters of Intent (LoIs) to five globally acclaimed universities to set up campuses in Maharashtra. These include the University of Aberdeen, University of York, University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Istituto Europeo di Design (IED). Held at the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, the event marked the beginning of the Maharashtra government's flagship 'EduCity' initiative, which will be located in Navi Mumbai as part of the planned 'Third Mumbai' — a project close to Chief Minister Fadnavis. 'No Dream Will Be Killed Anymore': Fadnavis Welcoming the institutions, Chief Minister Fadnavis said, 'We've heard for 20 years that esteemed global universities would come to India — today, we witnessed it happen. Thanks to Prime Minister Modi and the Union Minister of Education for leading this revolution. These five universities are coming to Maharashtra and opening the door to global students. It will give more accessibility and affordability to deserving students who otherwise couldn't go abroad. Now an ecosystem is being created so that no dream is killed.' Fadnavis also acknowledged UGC, CIDCO, and the Urban Development Department for enabling the project. 'This is just the beginning. We will not stop at five universities — we will create one of the biggest ecosystems of foreign universities in India, right here in Mumbai.' Dharmendra Pradhan: 'India is Being Positioned as a Global Knowledge Destination' Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted how reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 enabled foreign universities to operate in India. The UGC's policy was amended last year to facilitate this, and a similar model is already functional in Gujarat's GIFT City. He added that nine foreign universities have received LoIs so far, with six more in the pipeline. All classes are expected to begin by the next academic year, focusing on priority areas like STEM and business education. The government, he said, will not provide financial support but will act as a facilitator, ensuring global academic standards at lower costs for Indian students. Voices From the Universities Siladitya Bhattacharya, professor at the University of Aberdeen, the first Scottish university to branch out in India, called it a "significant milestone" and said many more institutions are keen to follow. Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India, called it a proud moment for the UK-India relationship, especially in education. Charlie Jeffrey, Vice Chancellor of the University of York, said the institution would maintain its research-intensive model in India, with a focus on AI, healthcare, and agriculture, embedded in local industries. He also drew a cultural connection, recalling how Sachin Tendulkar was the first overseas player signed by Yorkshire in 1992. Guy Littlefair, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Western Australia, highlighted the tie-up between Gondwana University in Gadchiroli and Curtin University in WA, pointing out shared expertise in mining — a key area for Maharashtra. Illinois Institute of Technology became the first US university to set up a campus in India. President Raj Echambadi, a Tamil Nadu-born American, said he was proud to bring the institution to the 'land of Nalanda.' He credited the NEP for enabling such global collaborations.

Israel Army Apologises for Wrong India Map After Online Uproar Over Jammu & Kashmir Mislabeling

/ Jun 14, 2025, 02:35PM IST In a rare diplomatic misstep, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have publicly apologised for posting a map on X (formerly Twitter) that incorrectly depicted Jammu and Kashmir as not part of India. The map, meant to illustrate Israel's threat assessment of Iran, triggered outrage among Indian users. Responding to criticism—especially from a handle named Indian Right Wing Community—the IDF admitted the graphic "fails to precisely depict borders" and issued an apology. The Indian government has not officially responded yet, but this comes at a time when ties between Delhi and Tel Aviv are strong—India is among Israel's top arms clients and trade partners. The timing is especially sensitive, coming shortly after PM Modi reaffirmed India's sovereignty over J&K and Ladakh post the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The diplomatic misfire raises questions about accuracy in global military communications amid rising West Asia tensions.#idf #indiaisrael #jammuandkashmir #mapcontroversy #operationsindoor #westasiatensions #modi #iranisraelcrisis #xcontroversy #idfapology #toi #toibharat #bharat #breakingnews #indianews
