‘An absolute must': Ferdinand taken aback by Amorim's decision to bench ‘game-changer' vs Arsenal
While we can expect that Benjamin Sesko will be leading the line from the off this weekend and Andre Onana will replace Altay Bayindir between the sticks, the rest of the personnel were essentially Amorim's first-choice team.
As such, supporters were surprised to see that there was no room for Amad Diallo, who's on the back of his most prolific campaign for the club after notching a hugely impressive 11 goals and 10 assists in 2024/2025.
How Amad fared vs the Gunners

Amad's lack of game time was one of many reasons Erik ten Hag so frequently came under fire last season, given the Ivorian had just overseen a stellar loan spell with Sunderland.
Yesterday, he was granted a 35-minute cameo to try and turn the tie around, replacing Diogo Dalot in the 55th minute when United were trailing 1-0.
Whilst chasing the game, Amad was able to have an 'explosive' impact off the bench; he won 100 per cent of duels (seven), 100 per cent of his tackles (three) and completed 100 per cent of his dribbles (two), as per StatmanDave.
Ferdinand on Amad concerns
Therefore, it comes as no surprise to see that Rio Ferdinand has pleaded with Amorim to grant the 23-year-old the prominent role he deserves.
When reacting to the evening's affairs at Old Trafford, he said (via Rio Ferdinand Presents): 'Amad came on second half and I think he did enough to show that against any team that you feel you're going to dominate possession, he has to play.
'I think he'll even be sitting there, Amad, saying, 'Play me against anybody, because I'll get our team higher up the pitch and I can beat people.'
'The way that Amorim plays you need people that are going to beat people with the ball or run beyond people and Amad can do both. It's just, can he do it from a right wing-back position? If Man Utd do get pinned back at any time he's playing, is he able to defend and cope defensively? They're the question marks we've got.
'But if you set out to dominate the game possession-wise, Amad is an absolute must in this team. Whether it's right wing-back or right wing, I think he has to play.
'I think over the last season and even in this one game here today, he's shown that he's got the confidence and the ability to be a game-changer.'

Sancho to evaluate all offers before making decision
Jadon Sancho is in talks to become a new Roma player. The capital club have advanced an offer to Manchester United for the Englishman's signing. The offer appears to be satisfactory, with United ready to accept it. However, Roma are still engaged in talks with the player's entourage. As reported by Sky Sports UK, in the last few hours, Roma officials have held talks with Jadon Sancho's entourage to discuss the terms of the agreement and outline the club's plans. A final decision is awaited from the player, who has already expressed his openness to the Giallorossi, but who wants to evaluate all options on the table, given the numerous clubs interested, including his former club, Borussia Dortmund, which continues to monitor his situation. Once the player's approval is obtained, Roma will be able to close the deal.

Manchester United consider two alternatives to Carlos Baleba
Manchester United are considering Morten Hjulmand and Adam Wharton after calling off their pursuit of midfielder Carlos Baleba. Manager Ruben Amorim has been trying hard to avoid the fate of previous United managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. He will be happy with the club's transfer activity so far this summer, as they have signed Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. But the Portuguese boss still wants to bring in a central midfielder before the September 1 transfer deadline. United made official contact with Brighton & Hove Albion for Baleba, but Fabian Hürzeler's side made it clear they do not want to sell the 21-year-old this summer. After ending their pursuit for Baleba, the Manchester titans are now considering Hjulmand and Wharton as alternatives, per The Athletic. There is an appreciation for Hjulmand who captains Amorim's old team Sporting Lisbon. Wharton is also highly rated at Old Trafford and the Premier League club could consider making a move for him. The Crystal Palace star has made huge strides since leaving Blackburn Rovers to come to South London in 2024. He has helped the Eagles win the FA Cup and Community Shield in his 18 months at the club. The England international has made 45 appearances in all competitions, with six assists to his name. But a deal for Wharton is expected to be difficult as Palace are said to value the midfielder very highly and could demand an enormous transfer fee. Hjulmand has been a key first-team player for Sporting since Amorim brought him to the club to replace Manuel Ugarte. He has helped his team win two Portuguese top-flight titles, featuring in 99 games and scoring eight goals. But Sporting have already sold Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal, and they will likely be very reluctant to lose their captain as well. Stats from Transfermarkt

Report: Manchester United may pursue Victor after Premier League hesitation
Victor's Decision Sparks Fresh Manchester United Links South American football is often a landscape of fast-changing transfer narratives, and John Victor's recent decision regarding a potential move to West Ham has added another twist to the ongoing goalkeeper market in Europe. According to Sky Sports and respected South American football expert Tim Vickery, the Brazilian shot-stopper made a personal choice to reject a Premier League move, leaving his future uncertain but sparking speculation that Manchester United may enter the picture. Vickery explained clearly that the narrative of West Ham leaving Victor stranded was inaccurate, stating, 'Well, there were stories saying that West Ham had left him in the lurch. This, as I understand it, is not true. It was his decision in the end.' Such clarity is important in a market often full of rumour and counter-rumour. Transfer Background and Comparisons Victor's case is reminiscent of Fabrício Bruno, who just last year opted against a switch to West Ham despite advanced talks. Vickery recalled, 'A year ago, this happened with West Ham and a big Brazilian defender called Fabrício Bruno, who played for Brazil at Wembley. He'd agreed terms with his club Flamengo to join West Ham, and then the player decided he wasn't getting paid enough. He weighed it up and didn't move. It seems a similar thing happened to John Victor.' This comparison highlights how financial and personal considerations can weigh heavily on footballers when they weigh a European transfer. For Victor, remaining with Botafogo after briefly being linked away could yet provide further opportunities. Botafogo had already moved to replace him, bringing in former Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto, yet still reinstated Victor into the starting side. Vickery revealed, 'Now, there was a question mark: would he be able to go back and play for Botafogo? Botafogo brought in Neto, the goalkeeper from Bournemouth, to replace him last Thursday night. But they did bring John back. I was in the stadium when they played a big game in the Copa Libertadores, and John was excellent, really, really excellent.' Such performances will only strengthen his stock in Brazil and abroad. Rising Reputation in South America Victor has been likened to Lucas Perri, another former Botafogo goalkeeper who recently made his debut for Leeds United. As Vickery noted, 'There's a little bit, when you saw the debut yesterday for Leeds of Lucas Perri, John's predecessor in the Botafogo goal, and John is quite similar, quite a similar goalkeeper.' For Premier League clubs seeking depth in goal, these comparisons matter. Perri's ability to transition into English football could pave the way for similar expectations around Victor. Goalkeepers with strong Libertadores experience are increasingly seen as viable targets for Europe's top clubs, given their exposure to high-pressure environments. Photo IMAGO Manchester United Angle The most intriguing development lies in the suggestion that Manchester United may consider Victor. Following a turbulent weekend at Old Trafford, speculation has grown that United could strengthen their goalkeeping department. Vickery summarised the mood, 'And given the events at Old Trafford at the weekend, there's been speculation that maybe United could look to bring him in. I would think it's probably unlikely after he's just rejected a move to England. But obviously, as we've seen from everything that's happened in this window, even without Champions League football, United is still a very, very powerful draw. So if there is something concrete on the table for this player, maybe Manchester United will turn his head more than West Ham were able to.' That reflection captures United's enduring magnetism. Despite mixed results in recent seasons, the club remains capable of attracting talent that might think twice about other Premier League outfits. Should United make an approach, they would be dealing with a player whose decision-making is evidently influenced by financial security and timing, not simply opportunity. This dynamic could prove pivotal if Old Trafford officials are serious about pursuing him. Wider Implications for Premier League Clubs Victor's decision not only affects West Ham but also serves as a reminder of the challenges English clubs face when negotiating with South American players. The lure of the Premier League is immense, yet so too is the comfort of remaining in a competitive domestic environment like Brazil. For clubs like Manchester United, who have both resources and global reputation, there remains a sense of inevitability that if they truly desire a player, they often get their way. Victor's story may yet be another case where initial hesitation gives way to eventual acceptance of an English adventure. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Manchester United supporter's perspective, this story is a fascinating subplot to an already turbulent summer. The goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford has been under scrutiny, and while André Onana has shown moments of quality, concerns linger over consistency. John Victor might not be a household name in Europe yet, but fans will note the glowing reports from Brazil and his standout Copa Libertadores performances. The idea that United could step in where West Ham failed carries its own appeal. Supporters will point out that United's badge has the power to sway decisions, even when players hesitate with other clubs. If Victor felt West Ham could not meet his expectations, the stature of United, the chance to play in front of 70,000 at Old Trafford and the possibility of becoming part of a rebuilding project may well convince him otherwise. Fans are also conscious of the need for squad depth. Injuries or dips in form can quickly derail a season, particularly in goal. A young, ambitious goalkeeper like Victor could provide genuine competition and cover. While some may argue that the priority lies in other areas, the modern game demands a reliable and adaptable squad. In short, United fans will watch developments with interest. They may not see Victor as the immediate solution to their problems, but as history has shown, sometimes the less heralded signings become the most vital. If the club does pursue him, there will be optimism that he can grow into a significant presence at Old Trafford.
