Arab League Pledges Economic Support for Morocco's 2030 World Cup Bid
The council adopted a resolution calling on all member states to back Morocco's efforts in hosting the global sporting event alongside Spain and Portugal.
In addition to World Cup preparations, the council's agenda encompassed several key economic initiatives. Members reviewed the implementation of previous resolutions from the 114th session and discussed the general secretariat's activities between sessions.
The economic and social dossier for the 34th ordinary summit in Baghdad also featured prominently in the discussions, alongside deliberations on Yemen's development needs, the Arab free trade zone, and customs union developments.
The Moroccan delegation at the session was led by Mohamed Ait Ouali, Morocco's ambassador to Cairo and permanent representative to the Arab League, accompanied by representatives from the ministries of Economy and Finance, as well as Industry and Commerce.
The Arab League's commitment joins a series of regional endorsements. In December 2024, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jassim Muhammad Al-Budaiwi announced the Gulf states' comprehensive support during his Rabat visit.
'Gulf countries will be fully ready to provide all forms of support and cooperation to Rabat for this event,' Al-Budaiwi stated during a joint press conference with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
More recently, in a meeting held on February 10, Moroccan Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit and his Spanish counterpart Fernando Grande-Marlaska discussed security preparations for the tournament in Madrid.
Both officials elevated the importance of collaboration between the co-hosting nations to ensure the event's success.

He added that, 'according to information circulating in his entourage and among opponents of normalization, his body shows suspicious signs that require a more thorough medical and security investigation to determine the circumstances of what really happened.' Born in 1948 in Casablanca to a Jewish family, Sion Assidon is a historical figure in Moroccan activism. A prominent far-left figure, he spent twelve years in prison between 1972 and 1984 for undermining state security. In 1996, he co-founded the anti-corruption association Transparency Morocco, and in 2010, launched the Moroccan branch of BDS. The Observatory's statement expressed 'full solidarity' with Assidon and his family, wishing him a 'speedy recovery' so he could 'resume his commitment.' It also underlined Assidon's dedication to fighting against genocide, ethnic cleansing, and apartheid, as well as his sacrifices, including years of imprisonment for defending democracy.

Marrakech – The Rabat prosecutor's office has decided to prosecute feminist activist Ibtissam Lachgar in detention. She was presented to the public prosecutor on Tuesday, following her arrest by the National Brigade of Judicial Police (BNPJ) on Sunday. Lachgar, also known as 'Betty' on social media, was arrested after posting a photo of herself wearing a t-shirt with inscriptions deemed offensive to divinity. The image showed her wearing a shirt with 'Allah' followed by 'is lesbian' – a play on a well-known feminist slogan, according to her explanation. The controversial post was accompanied by text describing Islam as 'fascist, phallocratic and misogynistic.' This publication sparked outrage online, with many users calling for her arrest. The 50-year-old activist is a prominent figure in Morocco's fight for individual liberties. 2025 Marhaba Operation Experiences 'Unprecedented' Crowds
The 2025 Marhaba operation is experiencing "unprecedented" crowds, with more than 2,7 millions of Moroccan expatriates crossing the borders since June, confirming "the diaspora's loyalty" and "the tourism boom," said the French radio station "Beur FM." "The numbers speak for themselves: between June 10 and August 4, 2025, nearly 2.8 million Moroccan expatriates returned to Morocco, an increase of more than 10% in comparison with the previous year,' the radio station pointed out in an article on its website entitled 'A summer record for the Moroccan diaspora and tourism in Morocco!'. The Marhaba operation has thus been a "success," the publication pointed out, adding that this momentum coincides with a particularly 'promising' month of July for Moroccan tourism, which has seen 11.6 million visitors in just seven months. In just under two months, nearly 2.8 million Moroccan expatriates arrived in the country, 10.37% more than last year, the article stated, stressing that 338,360 vehicles crossed the border, an increase of 3.74%. The Tanger Med port remains the primary point of entry for Moroccan expatriates, with 555,753 passengers and 175,808 vehicles, representing 35.87% of total arrivals by sea and land.
