Kirby shines as the Mariners beat the Orioles 1-0 for their 8th straight victory
Seattle pulled within a half-game of AL West-leading Houston, with the Astros playing at Boston on Tuesday night. Josh Naylor's RBI single in the first inning was all the scoring the Mariners needed.
Kirby (8-5) struck out seven without a walk. Eduard Bazardo and Gabe Speier worked the eighth, and Andrés Muñoz labored through the ninth for his 28th save in 34 chances.
The Orioles had the top of the order batting in the ninth, but Jackson Holliday grounded softly to the pitcher and Jordan Westburg struck out swinging. Gunnar Henderson walked, and then there was a lengthy delay as Muñoz was tended to on the mound. He eventually took a drink from a cup — as the crowd booed — and then Adley Rutschman singled.
Ryan Mountcastle came within a few feet of giving Baltimore its first walk-off win of the year, but his drive to left field curled foul. He then hit a routine grounder to the shortstop.
Dean Kremer (8-9) was a hard-luck loser after allowing a run and five hits in eight innings.
Cal Raleigh, baseball's current home run leader, went 0 for 4 for Seattle.
Kirby allowed only one man to reach scoring position, when Henderson hit a two-out double in the fourth. Rutschman then struck out swinging.
The Mariners were only 1 for 2 with runners in scoring position.

So, every once in a while, it just doesn't sync up, and so, we're bummed, we got a lot of respect for them, and we're looking forward to it, but we'll get to see them a couple of days later after that." Quinn then said the canceling of the joint practice does not impact playing time in the Week 2 preseason game against the Bengals. Quinn said he's already made those determinations about which players will play and how much. LA28 making Olympics history with first sale of venue naming rights for Games
Venues for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics will be permitted to sell naming rights, a first in the Games' storied history. LA28, the organizing committee for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) struck an agreement, which alleviates logistical headaches, cuts costs for the city and helps cover the budget for the Games but also continues the commercialization of an event the IOC has tried to protect over the years from corporate influence. It's important to note, however, that the field of play will remain free of visible advertising. 'Our job is to push and our job is to do what's best for the Olympics in Los Angeles,' LA28 chairman Casey Wasserman told the Los Angeles Times. 'Our job in those conversations [with the IOC] was to explain why this was more than just about money. It was about experience and value and opportunity.' Well-known venues such as SoFi Stadium and Arena will no longer have to adopt generic nicknames or remove existing signage for the Games. Notably, SoFi will host the opening and closing ceremonies along with swimming, and Arena will host gymnastics and boxing in 2028. "People know 'Crypto' as 'Crypto,' they don't know it as 'the gymnastics arena downtown,'' Wasserman said, via The Associated Press, when discussing Arena, the full-time home of the Los Angeles Lakers. For those venues with pre-existing sponsorship names, the companies that currently own naming rights can retain those for the Olympics by signing on as a founding-level partner, according to the LA Times. If they don't sign on, those venues will be renamed without a sponsor, per the LA Times' report. LA28 announced in a release Thursday that up to 19 temporary venues can carry naming rights, with members of The Olympic Partners program receiving first bidding opportunities. Contracts are in place for two of them already: Comcast Squash Center at Universal Studios and Honda Center, the latter of which will keep its name for the Olympic volleyball competition in Anaheim. The LA Coliseum, Rose Bowl and Dodger Stadium are not included in this new naming rights arrangement, according to the AP. But the revenue raised from these deals will prove critical in backing what LA28 describes as a privately-funded Games.

What to watch for in Colts' preseason contest with Packers originally appeared on The Sporting News The Colts have their second of three preseason games on Saturday when the Green Bay Packers come to Indianapolis. Despite the preseason being mostly used for evaluation purposes and to give players deep on the depth chart their chance to earn a roster spot, there's still plenty of storylines to monitor. Eric Edholm identified both the quarterback and cornerback positions as groups to watch for the Colts this weekend. Edholm says health under center is the top priority for Indianapolis. 'Better health would be a good start. QB Anthony Richardson suffered a dislocated finger last week. The plan was for him to play into the second quarter, but the injury knocked him out after seven snaps,' Edholm wrote. 'Richardson is expected to play Saturday, but last week was a missed opportunity in his battle with Daniel Jones.' This week's preseason contest is shaping up to be one of the best opportunities for Richardson or Jones to emerge as a favorite, as the Colts would ideally like to give their Week 1 starter the final preseason game to tune up. Defensively, the injuries to the cornerback position make the group one to watch. 'The secondary appears to be in flux after CB Justin Walley suffered a torn ACL,' Edholm said. 'He was vying for a starting role. Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents have been nursing injuries, so it will be interesting to see how the secondary snaps are divided up.' Starting nickel cornerback Kenny Moore II also has a knee injury which may keep him off the field this weekend, leaving Charvarius Ward as the only starter available. As a result, Samuel Womack III, Alex Johnson and Jonathan Edwards will all get their chance to audition for a roster spot.
