LAHAD DATU: A 52-year-old unemployed man pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court here on Friday to a charge of attempting to rape a 10-year-old girl. The accused, whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the victim, was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. He claimed trial before Magistrate Nur Asyraf Zolhani. According to the charge, the accused allegedly lured the young girl — his neighbour's daughter — into a hut around 10am on July 29 and attempted to rape her. Prosecuting officer Inspector Sitti Zubaeda M. Kasim told the court that the victim was home alone at the time. She later filed a police report with assistance from her family. A medical examination by an O&G specialist at Lahad Datu Hospital found no physical injuries on the victim. Despite this, the man is being charged with an attempted sexual offence involving a minor. The court was also informed that the accused tested positive for methamphetamine (Syabu) use. He will face a separate trial under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug-related offences. Magistrate Nur Asyraf Zolhani set September 22 for mention of the case, pending the victim's medical and Child Interview Centre (CIC) reports. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? QuickCheck: Did a man set fire to a tow truck in JB?

GETTING a traffic summons can be upsetting. Getting your car towed can be infuriating. But that's no reason to make it worse by committing arson or vandalism. Did a man set a tow truck on fire in Johor Baru after his car was towed by the city council? VERDICT: TRUE According to Bernama, police arrested a man suspected of setting fire to a tow truck owned by the Johor Baru City Council last Friday (Aug 15) at the vehicle storage depot at Lot 1, Johor Baru Waterfront. Johor Baru Selatan OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the incident was believed to have stemmed from the suspect's dissatisfaction after his Perodua Axia was towed away by the city council a day earlier. "The suspect, who had no money to pay for the compound, allegedly poured petrol and set the truck on fire, causing an estimated RM10,000 loss. "Police apprehended the suspect on the same day at 1.06pm and seized several items, including an aluminium container and a lighter," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 17). He said checks revealed that the suspect had previously been involved in a case under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. However, he tested negative for drugs. He added that the suspect has been remanded for five days starting yesterday to facilitate further investigation under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine on conviction. "Taking the law into one's own hands is a serious matter as it can endanger lives, property and public order. "The public is urged to use legal channels to resolve any problems and avoid violating the law," he said. A video recording of the arson has gone viral on Facebook.

Man arrested for setting fire to Johor Bahru council tow truck

JOHOR BAHRU: Police have arrested a man suspected of setting fire to a Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) tow truck last Friday. The incident occurred at the vehicle storage depot at Lot 1, Johor Bahru Waterfront. Johor Bahru Selatan police chief ACP Raub Selamat said the arson stemmed from the suspect's anger after his Perodua Axia was towed. 'The suspect, who had no money to pay for the compound, allegedly poured petrol and set the truck on fire, causing an estimated RM10,000 loss,' he said. Police arrested the suspect the same day at 1.06 pm and seized an aluminium container and a lighter. Investigations revealed the suspect had a prior record under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, though his urine test was negative. The suspect has been remanded for five days starting yesterday under Section 435 of the Penal Code. The offence carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine if convicted. 'Taking the law into one's own hands is a serious matter as it can endanger lives, property and public order,' Raub warned. He urged the public to use legal channels for dispute resolution instead of resorting to crime. A video of the arson has since gone viral on Facebook. The case remains under investigation. - BERNAMA
