Cyclones get by Colorado with 86-56 win, Crooks breaks ISU sphomore scoring record
During the game, Iowa State honored the 1999-00 and 2000-01 teams on the 25th anniversary of their back-to-back Big 12 Championships.
How It Happened
The Cyclones held a 12-9 lead with 5:45 to play in the opening quarter before the onslaught began. A layup by Emily Ryan with 5:14 left in the quarter sparked the 17-0 run to close the quarter. Audi Crooks hit back-to-back baskets following Ryan's layup, but it was back-to-back 3-pointers by Arianna Jackson, and a third-straight 3-pointer from Sydney Harris that put the game out of reach with the Cyclones up 29-9. It was the second time this season Iowa State had held a Big 12 opponent to single digits in the opening frame, as Iowa State led Arizona 15-6 after the first quarter on Jan. 11. With three assists in the first quarter, Ryan moved into the top 10 in NCAA Division I women's basketball history. She now has 942 for her career.
Neither team put together any momentum in the second quarter, a jumper by Crooks and a 3-pointer by Jackson were the only back-to-back baskets by either team in the quarter. Those baskets came within the first four minutes of the quarter. The Cyclones held a 43-23 lead at the half, as Crooks turned in 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Crooks has now scored in double figures in 58-straight games.
Colorado scored the first six points of the third quarter, cutting the lead to 14 with 8:00 remaining, but the Cyclones answered in a big way. Five-straight points from Crooks sparked a 12-2 run, as Iowa State pushed the lead to 24 with 5:26 remaining in the quarter. Colorado went on an 11-1 run late in the quarter, cutting the lead to 56-42 with 1:23 left in the quarter, but the Cyclones answered with the final five points to take a 61-42 lead into the final frame.
The fourth quarter was just more of the Cyclones. Crooks and Kelsey Joens combined to score the first eight points of the quarter, as the lead increased to 69-42 with 7:52 to play. Iowa State took its largest lead of the day with :40 to go at 86-54 on a 3-pointer by Reagan Wilson.
Key Performers
Crooks turned in her ninth double-double of the season with 33 points and 12 rebounds. With 597 points this season, she broke Ashley Joens' sophomore scoring record of 594 points. Ryan moved into second on Iowa State's all-time steals list with 215.
Next Up
Iowa State will have a bye this week before returning to action next Saturday at Kansas. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Could Shohei Ohtani pitch in relief in October? Here's what it would take
DENVER — Is there a scenario where Shohei Ohtani is pitching in relief for the Los Angeles Dodgers this postseason? 'Absolutely,' pitching coach Mark Prior told the Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday morning, though Prior clarified Wednesday afternoon that the discussions the organization has had about it have been limited solely to clarifying the language of the rulebook and Ohtani's ability to remain in the game as a hitter in such a scenario. Advertisement Major League Baseball's 'Ohtani Rule,' which was written for the 2022 season, specifies that a starting pitcher can remain in the game as a designated hitter even after being removed from the game as a pitcher. That does not apply the same way if the pitcher entered in relief; if Ohtani starts a game as a designated hitter and enters the game to pitch, removing him would mean taking him out of the game entirely and losing the designated hitter. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts added Wednesday that the concept of Ohtani pitching in relief in October has come up 'internally, just sort of exploring options.' While Prior said on the program that the idea of Ohtani pitching in relief 'has been discussed,' those discussions, Prior said, came back in June as Ohtani was nearing his return to a big league mound. Ohtani had communicated to the organization that he would rather complete his build-up as a pitcher in big league games, so the team essentially had him start games as an opener while keeping his bat in the lineup. "Can I see it? Absolutely." 👀 – #Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior on the potential of Shohei Ohtani coming out of the bullpen during the postseason. — Dan Patrick Show (@dpshow) August 20, 2025 'Maybe it was me asking the question because I didn't have a clear understanding of the moment,' Prior said. 'But if we're using him for one inning, let's use him as a starter. We were trying to talk about how does that play as a reliever. When you read the rulebook, as clear as the rulebook can be at times, he has to be in the lineup as a starter/DH.' The door remains open, regardless, that Ohtani could be used as a reliever at some point in October — it would just have to be in a situation where he would be recording the final outs of the game, such as to avoid the team removing his bat from the lineup. Advertisement 'I think at the end of the day if it gave us a chance to win a ballgame, whatever that added value, I think he would be all-in,' Prior said. 'Within reason. Because I do think he cares about winning ballgames. He cares about helping his team win on both sides of the baseball. So I think if it was presented in that situation, maybe he would. … Again, I don't know what that situation would be but in a kind of playoff, must-win, maybe that would.' Ohtani has only pitched one time in relief since coming over to MLB in 2018, and it wasn't in a big league game; he recorded the final three outs for Samurai Japan to close out the 2023 World Baseball Classic after starting the game as a designated hitter. 'There's still a lot of things we have to get to before it even becomes somewhat tangible,' Roberts said. Including, and most importantly, ensuring that Ohtani gets to October healthy as a starting pitcher, with the Dodgers right now essentially having their ideal group of postseason starting options all healthy between Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw. Also relevant is that Ohtani continues to look as formidable as he has on the mound as he has thus far in his return from a second major elbow surgery. Through his first nine starts (23 1/3 innings), he has a 3.47 ERA and has struck out 32 batters while walking just five. Among the measures the Dodgers have taken to monitor Ohtani, the pitcher, and his workload: while he's built up to five innings, he isn't expected to go any further than that, at least for the remainder of the regular season. Roberts and Prior each confirmed that is still the plan on Wednesday, before Ohtani was set to start on the mound against the Colorado Rockies. 'Right now it's five innings,' Prior said. 'Let's just continue to progress and keep getting him innings and starts and go from there. We'll have those discussions later on and Sho will have a lot of input on those decisions. But right now, it's five.' Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle

Saints acquire second-year wide receiver Devaughn Vele from Broncos for a pair of draft picks
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are alleviating some of the crowding in their wide receiver room by sending second-year pro Devaughn Vele to the New Orleans Saints for a pair of draft picks. The Broncos will get a fourth-round selection in next year's draft and a seventh-rounder in 2027 in exchange for Vele, who caught 41 passes for 475 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie last season. Vele (6-foot-5 and 210 pounds) was a seventh-round selection by Denver out of Utah in 2024. He caught all eight passes thrown to him in last year's opener and two of his three TDs came against the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs. He also caught a half-dozen passes for 80 yards against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12. Vele joins a receiver corps in New Orleans that also includes Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Brandin Cooks, Mason Tipton, Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Dante Pettis. Led by Courtland Sutton, the Broncos have a deep wide receiving corps, which coach Sean Payton has said would provide some difficult decisions when it comes to paring the roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players next week. In addition to Marvin Mims Jr., Trent Sherfield Sr. and Troy Franklin, rookie Pat Bryant has had an outstanding training camp as have undrafted rookies Joaquin Davis, Jerjuan Newton and Courtney Jackson. The Broncos (2-0) visit the Saints (0-1-1) Saturday in a preseason finale. ___ AP Sports Writer Brett Martel in New Orleans contributed. ___ AP NFL:

Broncos trade WR Devaughn Vele to the Saints for a pair of draft picks
Sean Payton is doing business with his former team. Payton's Broncos are trading wide receiver Devaughn Vele to the Saints for a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick, the teams announced. The emergence of Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant made Vele expendable. In last week's preseason game against the Cardinals, Bryant caught four passes for 70 yards and Franklin four for 67 yards and two touchdowns. The Broncos drafted Vele in the seventh round in 2024, and he caught 41 passes for 475 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games as a rookie. Vele, who is 6 foot 5, adds height to a relatively small Saints' wide receivers room.
