Inside Karen Pirie star Lauren Lyle's private life and career as ITV drama returns
Lauren Lyle is set to grace our screens once again as Karen Pirie in the second series of the ITV detective drama.
The 32-year-old actress is perhaps most recognised for her portrayal of Marsali MacKimmie Fraser in Outlander, where she stars alongside Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan.
Her acting repertoire also includes roles such as Jade Antoniak in BBC's Vigil, as well as parts in Netflix's Toxic Town and The Bombing on Pan Am 103.
On the theatrical front, Lauren has shone in productions of The Crucible, Wuthering Heights, Consensual and Merchant of Venice.
She first made a name for herself on the West End after relocating to London at 19, which was swiftly followed by her television debut on BBC Three's BBC Comedy Feeds, in an episode titled Radges, reports the Express.
Subsequent appearances included a stint in Holby City, and a starring role opposite Sean Bean in the BBC drama Broken.
Her breakthrough role arrived in 2017 with Outlander, and the following year saw Lauren feature in the film adaptation of Fiona Shaw's novel Tell It to the Bees, alongside Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger.
In addition to her acting career, Lauren hosts a podcast, She's A Rec, where she engages guests in discussions about their favourite albums, films, books and influential female heroes.
Her portrayal of the intrepid young Scottish detective Karen Pirie earned her the accolades of Best Actress - Television and Favourite Scot on Screen at the 2023 Bafta Awards Scotland.
Lauren previously opened up to The Sunday Post about her journey to stardom, recalling her move to London where she lived with four strangers and juggled various odd jobs while chasing her dream.
She recounted: "I came to London to audition for drama schools and came close but didn't get in. I think I'd only been to London once before as a kid but didn't remember it."
Her passion was undeniable as she expressed: "I was so hungry for it, and being around other actors in this world was so thrilling and I knew this was what I wanted to do and the place to do it."
Despite having what she described as "deluded confidence" and a competitive nature, Lauren shared that she worked as a dog walker, handed out flyers, manned reception desks, and even sorted stock at Zara for months before landing transformative roles in Outlander and Broken, which both came her way within weeks of each other.
Reflecting on the tough times, she said: "It was bleak at times but I loved going to the theatre and seeing this life dangled in front of me. It was quite inspiring."
Away from the limelight, Lauren maintains a private life, with her social media accounts highlighting her career achievements and travel experiences.
In the 2023 interview with The Sunday Post, she did share a glimpse into her personal life, confirming her relationship status and revealing that her boyfriend joined her in celebrating the Baftas.
She divulged: "My parents are coming - my dad has a new velvet jacket to go with his tartan troos - as is my boyfriend, who is South-African-Australian, but we've recently discovered he has lots of Scottish heritage, so he might wear a kilt."

‘We lost £250,000 minutes into new ITV show – but we can't complain'
Warning: spoilers ahead for the first episode of The Fortune Hotel series 2. It's never ideal being the first contestants to be eliminated on a primetime gameshow. However, that's the reality that friends and cleaning business partners Chelsey and Briony faced when they embarked on the adventure of competing in ITV's The Fortune Hotel series 2. The second season of the show, which is hosted by Stephen Mangan, launched tonight, with 11 pairs making their way to a hotel in the Caribbean with the aim of checking in and getting their hands on a briefcase containing a £250,000 fortune. Sadly, Chelsey and Briony were eliminated before they even had the chance to enter the hotel, as other players were quicker to figure out a cryptic crossword that informed them where they needed to go. Thankfully, they're still in good spirits about the experience. 'It weren't all bad. We can't really complain. We had an all-inclusive holiday in an absolutely stunning place that not many people would see with your best friend. We got to do things on the island,' Chelsey, who was 34 at the time of filming, tells Metro. 'It was surreal, once in a lifetime.' Then we went visiting waterfalls, and the sea… The experience looking back on it was fantastic.' At the start of episode one, the competing pairs have to fill out a crossword that, when solved, tells them that they need to head to the reception desk of the hotel. The first batch of couples who reach the correct answer and get to the hotel are safe to scheme another day – but the others are all at risk of being eliminated right away. They each choose a briefcase to open, one of which contains the devastating 'early checkout card'. Briony and Chelsey decided to select briefcase number two, as it's both their favourite number. Unfortunately, they had selected the poisoned chalice. 'Unfortunately, our lucky number just wasn't lucky,' Briony quips. Even though the friends were in the show for a very short amount of time, they still left a big impression with their energetic personalities, racing towards Stephen on the beach after they arrived by boat. Host Stephen Mangan gives Metro the lowdown on what to expect in The Fortune Hotel series two… which he promises will have even more shocks than before. 'It was exciting the first time around because it was a show that had never been done before,' Stephen tells us about the first series. 'Sometimes these shows are formats that they've tried in other countries and have been a hit, so they know how they work. But we were inventing a brand new game, which is exciting and terrifying at the same time.' So what's in store for the second outing? 'More surprises, more challenges, more epic things happening,' he promises. The host adds that if he were a player on the game, he'd be more 'ruthless' than fans might expect. Just like many other viewers, she watched the show assuming that it was a pretty straightforward game set in an idyllic paradise – but getting to grips with the show firsthand made both of the women realise how much harder it actually is. It's a different ballgame completely,' she says, as Chelsey adds: 'It's not what we expected at all, but we loved every minute of it.' The BBC programme sees a group of strangers try to figure out where they are in Europe through a series of clues in a bid to win £100,000. At one point, the group took a train through a scenic forest, with a challenge allowing one team to get further clues as to where they were. They then returned to the bus and hit the road once again, failing to realise that they hadn't actually gained any ground until they found themselves back at the same train station the next day. Host Rob Brydon had a further surprise in store for them, by bringing out Ashvin, Claire and Chloe-Anne. Viewers will remember that the three players had failed to make it on to the bus in episode one, but had now returned for a second chance to join the adventure. Rob explained that the members of the losing team from the previous task would each join forces with one of the returning players and go head to head. These were James, Ben, Darren and Nick, but the winning team - Judith, Josh and Saskia - had the chance to save one of them outright, and they chose Darren. The remaining trio then picked their teams and working together, they all had to go through a box of items for a specific destination chosen by the announcer, and find pieces that had nothing to do with that location. After two rounds, James and Ashvin were the losing team, and they then had to go head-to-head for the final spot on the bus. In the end, Ashvin picked the right items, meaning James had to leave there and then. Fans stunned as THREE Destination X contestants are immediately axed in brutal opening twist The news left the rest of the team - in particular Saskia - shocked, and James was in tears as he said goodbye. But that wasn't the end of the departures, as the players still had to lock in where they thought this week's final destination was, with the person furthest away being sent packing as well. Having seen the clues, the winning team were convinced it was Munich in Germany, but had decided to try and throw the losing team off by suggesting it was Dortmund. After everyone had locked in their locations, Rob revealed the sad news that Ben had been the furthest from the destination - which was Munich - and that he would be leaving the bus immediately. It came as the corporation faced renewed demands to shelve the series after a misconduct probe led to the departures of its long-running hosts last month. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy revealed yesterday she would not be watching. During the 58-minute opener which aired last night on BBC One, Wallace and Torode were featured more than 100 times. The presenters, both 60, were seen on seven occasions during the first minute alone. The nature of the show meant they then kept popping up repeatedly throughout — although there was a noticeable lack of banter between them and the contestants. A TV insider said: 'This was incredibly embarrassing for the Beeb who were probably hoping that there was something which could be done in the edit to drastically minimise how much they seemed to be on camera. MasterChef returns with Gregg Wallace and John Torode - but fans spot HUGE changes to show 'But the format of the show pivots so much around the presenters, who have to judge the meals, interview the guests and outline their suggested dishes and ingredients. 'There was simply no other way they could have made the show function without them being seen so much. The BBC was then urged not to broadcast the new series, which had already been recorded, given that both men featured so heavily. 'Bigger than individuals' At one point it was suggested it might just be put on iPlayer, and not go out on BBC One. However BBC Director-General Tim Davie insisted MasterChef was 'bigger than individuals' before it was confirmed it would go ahead as planned. Mr Davie said his 'overwhelming concern' was for the amateur chefs who 'gave their heart and soul to this programme'. The first episode then aired at 8pm on BBC One. It remained to be seen if viewing figures are drastically different to last year's series opener which pulled in 3.2million. Ms Nandy would not be among them. The minister said: 'It's absolutely not for me, as the Culture Secretary and a member of the government, to tell broadcasters what they can and can't broadcast.' Former Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark, who alleged Wallace told 'sexualised' jokes while filming Celebrity MasterChef in 2011, said she knew many women had asked the BBC not to broadcast the new series. She told the BBC's Scotcast podcast that she 'probably won't be watching'. 'Enabling environment' Broadcast union Bectu said bad behaviour 'should not be rewarded with prime-time coverage'. Last week, Sarah Shafi, one of the contestants on the new series, said she was edited out after asking for it not to be aired. Ms Shafi said it should have been axed out of respect to those whose complaints were upheld. That would have sent 'a strong message the BBC are not supporting people in those prominent positions or facilitating some sort of enabling environment', she added.
