Reduce import dependence on Lithium and Cobalt with AI: Union Minister
Emphasizing the strategic importance of critical minerals, the minister urged geoscientists to embrace emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing for enhanced exploration, including predicting hidden mineral resources and interpreting seismic data with greater precision.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the two-day 'Next-Gen Geophysics 2025: Unlocking Earth's Hidden Treasures' international conference organised by the Geological Survey of India Training Institute (GSITI), Bandlaguda-Nagole, here on Monday (June 9, 2025).
India is entering a new era where science, sustainability, and technology will play a pivotal role in mineral exploration. There is also a need for innovation alongside collaboration with academia, and industry. Flagship initiatives like the ₹10,300 crore India AI Mission and the ₹6,000 crore National Quantum Mission could become catalysts for innovation, he said.
Mr. Reddy highlighted the establishment of the National Landslide Forecasting Centre and a recent Memorandum of Understanding with Italy for enhancing disaster preparedness. He called for the expansion of monitoring networks and the adoption of cutting-edge forecasting technologies.
Responsible mining practices
The Minister stressed the importance of responsible mining practices that benefit local communities and protect the environment. He highlighted the vital role of geophysics in achieving the goals of 'Viksit Bharat' by providing innovative tools to address challenges such as climate change, urbanization, and disaster risk mitigation.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Reddy, along with Malakjgiri MP Eatala Rajender, inaugurated two newly inducted Hydrostatic Drill Rigs, the next-gen geophysics expo pavilion, showcasing advanced geophysical tools and AI-enabled exploration models. GSITI's deputy director general S. Ravi, GSI DG Asit Saha, additional director S.D. Patbhaje, leading geoscientific experts from the country and abroad participated, as per a press release.

Heavy rains that continued overnight also triggered landslides in Changda village of Kathua and Dilwan-Hutli in Lakhanpur but no major damage was reported from the area. The rains submerged several low-lying areas in the district and the railway line passing through Kathua was also shut. This fresh string of cloudbursts and landslides in Kathua came a few days after a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Chisoti village in Kishtwar district on August 14, at least 60 people dead, more than 100 injured and several people missing. In Kathua, the roads leading to the affected villages were damaged and washed away in some places, and all the rivers and canals in the area were flowing above the danger mark on Sunday. The officials of the district administration as well as disaster management teams had to walk several kilometres to reach the affected villages. "Continous rains triggered landslides and all the houses in these areas were buried under the debris of mud, sand and stone from the nearby hill. Seven persons were killed and 11 others injured in two villages. We have performed the last rites of all the people killed and our teams are working on the restoration plan," deputy commissioner of Kathua Rajesh Sharma told ET. Union home minister Amit Shah spoke to lieutenant governor of J&K Manoj Sinha and chief minister Omar Abdullah on the cloudburst in Kathua and assured all support from the central government. Abdullah announced ex-gratia assistance to the deceased from the CM's relief fund. Rescue Ops Continue in Chisoti Meanwhile, the rescue operation in Kishtwar continued for the fourth day on Sunday, even as the death toll continued to increase and several people remained missing. "Our rescue and rehabilitation operations continue. Death toll has reached 61 and several injured people have been sent home after treatment," deputy commissioner of Kishtwar Pankaj Kumar told ET. The Jammu-based White Knight Corps of the Indian Army said that it had intensified rescue and relief efforts in Chisoti village and that the Army's engineer bridging teams along with equipment had started construction of a bridge at the site of Chisoti Nala.

Centre trying to destroy welfare board: State construction workers
Mysuru: Karnataka State Construction Workers' and Welfare Board chairman Balakrishna Shetty on Sunday accused the Union govt of attempting to destroy the state construction welfare board. He was speaking at the second district-level conference of the State Construction Worker Welfare Federation held in the city. He said that the state govt constituted the construction welfare board as per the Construction Workers Welfare Act 1996. The state govt has been providing 19 different types of benefits to construction workers after constituting this board, including scholarships for children, healthcare, bus passes, and several other facilities. As the state govt stopped releasing funds for the promotion of education for construction workers' children, the federation questioned this in court by filing a petition, which delivered its verdict in favour of construction workers, he said. The federation plans to conduct a fifth state-level conference of construction workers on Aug 24 and 25 at Koppal. SSLC and PUC toppers among children of construction workers were felicitated on the occasion. Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address BJP's booth committee conference in Tirunelveli on August 22: L. Murugan
Union Home Minister is set to make yet another political visit to Tamil Nadu on August 22 when he would address the BJP's booth committee conference in Tirunelveli. Disclosing this to journalists on Sunday in Chennai, party leader and Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan said: 'BJP state president Nainar Nagendran will preside over the meeting. Booth agents from five parliamentary constituencies including Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar will participate in the first such conference. We are planning to hold more conferences as we progress.' In response to a query on Chief Minister M K Stalin's criticism of the alliance, Mr. Murugan said the AIADMK-BJP alliance is going strong. To another question about a few well known personalities quitting AIADMK and joining DMK recently, he said it is quite a common occurrence and claimed DMK leaders are in touch with the BJP. However, Mr. Murugan refused to share further details and said they would be known in coming months. On the recent searches by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) at the premises of State Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy, he contended the agency functions independently based on available inputs. Mr. Murugan criticised VCK founder and MP Thol. Thirumavalavan on the recent protest by a section of conservancy workers in Chennai and alleged he 'was not raising issues relating to Dalits during the DMK regime'. He also backed Governor R N Ravi's remark on school education in the State and said the state government should focus on addressing the infrastructure gaps in government schools. Mr. Murugan said from August 18 onwards 38 trains operating across Tamil Nadu will stop at additional railway stations. The Minister said he continuously received petitions from the public demanding that express trains, superfast trains and passenger trains should stop at additional railway stations and he took it to the attention of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw who accepted the demands of railway passengers and issued necessary orders for extra stoppage. Mr. Murugan said the Tamil Nadu government has been given about ₹10 lakh crore in the last 10 years to implement social welfare schemes including modernization and expansion of national highways, airports and ports. The Union government has given ₹6626 crore for the state's railway projects in 2025-26, while during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance regime between 2009-2014, this allocation was ₹879 crore, he said. Mr. Murugan added under the Amrit Bharat Railway Stations Scheme, work is being carried out at a fast pace to upgrade 77 railway stations in Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of ₹2,948 crore. The Minister said work of laying new tracks for a distance of 2,587 km is under way at an estimated cost of ₹33,467 crore, and 10 new railway lines, 3 broad gauge railway lines and 9 double-track lines are being constructed.
