Reduce import dependence on Lithium and Cobalt with AI: Union Minister
Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy said India's future economic strength depends on reducing dependence on import of key minerals like lithium and cobalt through AI-powered, clean, and efficient exploration methods.
Emphasizing the strategic importance of critical minerals, the minister urged geoscientists to embrace emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing for enhanced exploration, including predicting hidden mineral resources and interpreting seismic data with greater precision.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the two-day 'Next-Gen Geophysics 2025: Unlocking Earth's Hidden Treasures' international conference organised by the Geological Survey of India Training Institute (GSITI), Bandlaguda-Nagole, here on Monday (June 9, 2025).
India is entering a new era where science, sustainability, and technology will play a pivotal role in mineral exploration. There is also a need for innovation alongside collaboration with academia, and industry. Flagship initiatives like the ₹10,300 crore India AI Mission and the ₹6,000 crore National Quantum Mission could become catalysts for innovation, he said.
Mr. Reddy highlighted the establishment of the National Landslide Forecasting Centre and a recent Memorandum of Understanding with Italy for enhancing disaster preparedness. He called for the expansion of monitoring networks and the adoption of cutting-edge forecasting technologies.
Responsible mining practices
The Minister stressed the importance of responsible mining practices that benefit local communities and protect the environment. He highlighted the vital role of geophysics in achieving the goals of 'Viksit Bharat' by providing innovative tools to address challenges such as climate change, urbanization, and disaster risk mitigation.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Reddy, along with Malakjgiri MP Eatala Rajender, inaugurated two newly inducted Hydrostatic Drill Rigs, the next-gen geophysics expo pavilion, showcasing advanced geophysical tools and AI-enabled exploration models. GSITI's deputy director general S. Ravi, GSI DG Asit Saha, additional director S.D. Patbhaje, leading geoscientific experts from the country and abroad participated, as per a press release.

Responding to questions on the possibility of reunification among factions of the Nationalist Congress Party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, and the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Mr. Sapkal said such decisions rested with the respective parties. 'As the Maha Vikas Aghadi, we contested the last two elections together. Similarly, the INDIA bloc stands united against forces undermining democracy and the Constitution. Our alliances will strengthen with those committed to safeguarding these values,' he said. Mr. Sapkal added that alliance-related decisions for the upcoming municipal elections would be taken at the local level in consultation with other coalition partners.

Rijiju highlights border connectivity, urges public cooperation in Frontier Highway project
Itanagar, June 9 (UNI) Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, while distributing compensation to the land-affected beneficiaries for the 9th Mile to Lada stretch of Frontier Highway, emphasized the strategic importance of the ambitious project, which aims to provide double-lane road connectivity to border regions of Arunachal Pradesh. Addressing the gathering, Minister Rijiju stated that the government is committed to transforming the state's connectivity landscape, asserting that 'development cannot happen without proper road connectivity'. 'Gone are the days when travelling to the state capital from places like Nafra, Seppa, or Koloriang took an entire day or more. Today, with improved infrastructure, Itanagar is just a few hours away. Ensuring road connectivity for our people was my dream and commitment,' he said. He also urged the public to support ongoing development efforts and refrain from creating hurdles in project implementation. A.P.'s Quantum Valley should have a distinct identity like Silicon Valley, CM tells officials
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu told the officials in a review meeting on the Amaravati Quantum Valley on Monday to ensure that it gains a distinct identity akin to the Silicon Valley of the U.S. and that it leads the way in quantum technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Mr. Naidu announced that a workshop on Quantum Mission, which was proposed to be implemented with an investment of ₹4,000 crore in two phases, would be held in Amaravati on June 30, and stressed the importance of paying meticulous attention to every aspect of the Quantum Valley development with due focus on building iconic structures, drawing a parallel to the Hitec City in Hyderabad. Officials said the objective of the mission was to position Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) as a Quantum Innovation Hub, make the State a key partner in the National Quantum Mission, and strengthen the knowledge economy. The focus of the Quantum Mission would be on quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices. The Chief Minister would lead the mission alongside the IT Minister, Chief Secretary, IT Secretary, Finance Secretary, Mission Director, and an expert committee. Phase-I (2025–2027) would focus on infrastructure development, education and research, and pilot programs and Phase-II on propelling A.P. towards global leadership, boosting commercialisation and export capabilities. The government would soon appoint a Director for the Quantum Mission, which would be anchored by IBM.
