James Gunn admits Henry Cavill's Superman firing was 'terrible'

Metro20-07-2025
James Gunn has opened up on the 'really unfair' way Henry Cavill was fired from DC and his role as Superman.
The Witcher star first appeared as the caped superhero in 2013's Man of Steel before starring as Superman in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
He also appeared in Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021 and made a cameo appearance in 2022's Black Adam.
Cavill announced in 2022 he would be returning to the role in Gunn's reimagining of the franchise, only to walk back on his comments months later when he was let go by DC.
Superman, released earlier this month, stars Pearl actor David Corenswet in the titular role instead.
Recalling the incident, Gunn condemned DC Studios for their handling of Cavill's role in the film.
'It's terrible – believe it or not, the day we were dealing with trying to figure out if we could take the job at DC Studios, the day the deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back,' he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
'I was like, 'What is going on? We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do Superman. It was really unfair to him and a total bummer.'
'There was a vacuum at the time and a lot of people had a take on what they wanted to do at DC and they were trying to force their way and it was just never part of the equation.'
He went on to say the situation was 'really unfortunate' and he felt for the 'poor guy', but that Cavill took the news like an 'absolute gentleman.'
'He said, 'The only thing I ask is that I'm able to reveal it myself as opposed to coming from you guys.' And I'm like, 'That's a class act',' he continued.
Gunn also said he would love to have Cavill in a future DC film, revealing he 'talked to him about it on that day.'

Cavill shared the news he would not be returning in an Instagram post, writing: 'I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.
'After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life.
'The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.'
Gunn's Superman was released on July 11 and currently holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with several glowing reviews.
It sees Corenswet's Superman drawn into conflict and the public questioning his actions, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) the opportunity to rid the world of Superman for good.
On taking on the role and being propelled from a relative unknown actor to one of the world's most recognisable superheroes, Corenswet opened up to Metro about how he handled the news.

'Oh, I just played solitaire by myself and panicked quietly,' he said on the red carpet at London's Superman Fan Event.
'No, I had the opportunity to tell about six or seven people who I was close to and just kind of relished in this one hour where I had a big secret that nobody else knew about,' he continued.
'It's a rare moment in life, so I tried to be present with it and not be too overwhelmed.
'I got to tell my wife and a couple of family members and then just sat in a chair and waited for the news to break.'
Thankfully, once David's not-so-secret identity had been exposed, he could rely on other actors who've slipped into Superman's red Speedos for advice.
'I was lucky enough to exchange letters with Tyler Hoechlin and Henry Cavill, two fellas who have played Superman before me,' he explained.
Despite initial backlash over Cavill being replaced, Corenswet appears to have won fans over with his appearance in Gunn's Superman. More Trending
'There aren't enough words to describe just how much I love david corenswet as superman, and just how much of a masterpiece superman (2025) is,' Cntarogothic wrote on X.
'The thing is, sure, Henry Cavill played Superman, but David Corenswet IS Superman. Just, straight up,' Noodles_and_tea added.
StacyH90 admitted: 'I was a big fan of Henry Cavill's Superman, and was bummed when it was clear we weren't getting more of him. But hot dayum David Corenswet really holds his own! He IS Superman! The man that could kill us all w/ a twitch of a finger but chooses to do good, saving squirrels too.'
Cree reasoned: 'Henry Cavill and David Corenswet are both great Supermen who embody different ideals of the character and liking one more doesn't mean you have to hate the other'.

‘We lost £250,000 minutes into new ITV show – but we can't complain'

Warning: spoilers ahead for the first episode of The Fortune Hotel series 2. It's never ideal being the first contestants to be eliminated on a primetime gameshow. However, that's the reality that friends and cleaning business partners Chelsey and Briony faced when they embarked on the adventure of competing in ITV's The Fortune Hotel series 2. The second season of the show, which is hosted by Stephen Mangan, launched tonight, with 11 pairs making their way to a hotel in the Caribbean with the aim of checking in and getting their hands on a briefcase containing a £250,000 fortune. Sadly, Chelsey and Briony were eliminated before they even had the chance to enter the hotel, as other players were quicker to figure out a cryptic crossword that informed them where they needed to go. Thankfully, they're still in good spirits about the experience. 'It weren't all bad. We can't really complain. We had an all-inclusive holiday in an absolutely stunning place that not many people would see with your best friend. We got to do things on the island,' Chelsey, who was 34 at the time of filming, tells Metro. 'It was surreal, once in a lifetime.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Briony, who was 33 at the time of filming, adds: 'We went river tubing. Then we went visiting waterfalls, and the sea… The experience looking back on it was fantastic.' At the start of episode one, the competing pairs have to fill out a crossword that, when solved, tells them that they need to head to the reception desk of the hotel. The first batch of couples who reach the correct answer and get to the hotel are safe to scheme another day – but the others are all at risk of being eliminated right away. They each choose a briefcase to open, one of which contains the devastating 'early checkout card'. Briony and Chelsey decided to select briefcase number two, as it's both their favourite number. Unfortunately, they had selected the poisoned chalice. 'Unfortunately, our lucky number just wasn't lucky,' Briony quips. Even though the friends were in the show for a very short amount of time, they still left a big impression with their energetic personalities, racing towards Stephen on the beach after they arrived by boat. Host Stephen Mangan gives Metro the lowdown on what to expect in The Fortune Hotel series two… which he promises will have even more shocks than before. 'It was exciting the first time around because it was a show that had never been done before,' Stephen tells us about the first series. 'Sometimes these shows are formats that they've tried in other countries and have been a hit, so they know how they work. But we were inventing a brand new game, which is exciting and terrifying at the same time.' So what's in store for the second outing? 'More surprises, more challenges, more epic things happening,' he promises. The host adds that if he were a player on the game, he'd be more 'ruthless' than fans might expect. To read more from our interview, click here. Before competing in the new series, Briony had already seen the first, and 'absolutely loved it'. Just like many other viewers, she watched the show assuming that it was a pretty straightforward game set in an idyllic paradise – but getting to grips with the show firsthand made both of the women realise how much harder it actually is. More Trending 'When you're in it, and you have got 101 things going on around you, it's so hard. It's a different ballgame completely,' she says, as Chelsey adds: 'It's not what we expected at all, but we loved every minute of it.' The women from Wigan would be up for returning if there was an all-stars edition, especially as they felt as though they didn't really get a chance to show themselves off fully. 'People tell us all the time we're funny,' Chelsey remarks. 'We're such a little act together, we bounce off each other, and we feel like we didn't have the time to really show that. Businesses brace for impact on trade ahead of sold-out Oasis shows

Edinburgh business owners are bracing themselves for the arrival of Oasis, who kick off their three sold-out shows at Murrayfield this weekend. Up to 210,000 fans are expected to descend on the city over the three shows beginning on Friday. For some, it's a business bonanza, but for others, disruptions in the area mean they will lose trade. Graeme, who has operated a car garage right beside Murrayfield stadium for 20 years, says the road closures in place mean he could lose thousands of pounds of business. STV News Graeme claims he won't make any money during the concerts. 'I'll be obviously shut, all of Friday, most of Tuesday, not back open until Wednesday', he told STV News. 'Then we've got AC/DC the following week. 'Obviously, I can't make money, but I've still got to pay my rent, still got to pay my wages, still got to pay all my bills. 'I won't make any money. I'm a small business and I've been here 20 years. I know the council has given the green light for more and more concerts.' The closures will impact several streets around the stadium, including the surrounding ones by Ali's Deli. He says the disruption will mean his customers may be impacted on the first date of the run. STV News Ali runs a deli by Murrayfield Stadium. 'It's a very busy day', he told STV News. 'People are still coming back from holidays in the meantime so, I think it's going to have a really bad effect on the business that day because people will not be able to access the area. 'However, as a business owner and manager, it is going to affect our delivery, even the rubbish collection on a Friday. 'Compared to the May concert, which was really busy. That was good. Here's hoping the day will be the same, but on Friday, I'm not sure. 'We will just see how it goes.' The local council has urged Oasis fans only travel to Murrayfield and the surrounding area if they have a ticket to the sold-out shows. They have also appealed to those attending to 'remember our residents'. Extra trains, trams and buses will be put in place to accommodate the crowds, while key areas surrounding Murrayfield will be tidied up after each show. City of Edinburgh Council Leader Cllr Jane Meagher, said: 'Excitement is building in Edinburgh for Oasis Live 25 as it's our turn to witness rock history. 'With all of our partners in the city we've been planning for this for some time to make sure we're ready to welcome thousands of Oasis fans over three nights. 'There will be extra trains, trams, and buses to accommodate concert goers, along with those attending our summer festivals. With this in mind, we urge you to plan ahead. 'We are keen for everyone to have an enjoyable experience, not only at the show, but on their way before and after. Whilst we relish hosting the biggest and best events and want everyone attending to truly enjoy themselves, it's important that we remember our residents. 'We ask that visitors are considerate and respectful of them whilst enjoying our fantastic capital city. We're urging people to only travel to Murrayfield and the surrounding area if you have a ticket.'
