Opel hands severe GSE shock to most powerful Mokka ever made

Its GSE moniker, revived two years ago to denote Grand Sport Electric instead of Grand Sport Einspritzung, which signified fuel injection in German, Opel has added its performance moniker to the Mokka for the first time.
Based on the updated Mokka unveiled in Europe last year, the Mokka GSE becomes the Blitz's second performance EV following the debut of the Astra GSe three years ago.
New inside and out
Stylistically, the GSE's changes from the Mokka GS Line it is based on include model-specific 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in EV-optimised Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres, GSE front and rear bumpers, GSE door sills, yellow GSE brake calipers and GSE decals at the base of the front doors in yellow and black.

Inside, the GSE's unique fittings comprise sport seats trimmed in Alcantara with GSE logos embroidered into the front seat backs, GSE-specific readouts and dials within the pair of 10-inch displays, Alcantara on the doors, alloy pedals and a white line plus yellow stitching on the seats.
Underneath
Underneath, Opel has sharpened up the GSE's steering and fitted a Torsen limited-slip front differential, as well as new double hydraulic shock absorbers.

On the power front, the Mokka GSE retains the familiar 54-kWh battery pack, but with power from the electric motor dramatically increased from 115kW/260Nm to 206kW/345Nm.
The result is the fastest production Mokka ever made with a top speed of 200 km/h and 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.

As with the Astra, the Mokka GSE offers three driving modes: Eco, Normal and Sport. No details about range or charging times were disclosed.
Not for us
On sale before the end of the year in Europe and in the United Kingdom by sister brand Vauxhall, the Mokka GSE is not expected to debut in South Africa anytime soon.
Instead, buyers will continue to make do with the conventional 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine as part of the refreshed range introduced earlier this week.

Dutch court rules Opel, Peugeot, Citroën, DS diesel models used emissions cheat software
A Dutch court on Wednesday said diesel cars sold by Opel, Peugeot, Citroën and DS in the Netherlands from 2009 contained software designed to cheat emissions tests. In its intermediary ruling in a class-action suit brought by three organisations against Stellantis, which now owns the targeted car companies, the court did not determine whether any compensation should be paid. Stellantis denied the accusations and said it was considering 'appropriate next steps' to defend its interests. 'Stellantis firmly believes that the vehicles comply with all applicable emission regulations and that the court has made incorrect interim considerations in this case,' it said. The car brands have been under investigation in Europe, along with several other carmakers, in the wake of Volkswagen's Dieselgate emissions scandal. The Dutch court said it was clear that diesel cars introduced by the four brands since 2014 were equipped with software that manipulated their emission control system, keeping nitrogen oxide emissions artificially low during official tests. It said this was also the case for Opel diesels introduced since 2009, while it suspected the same for the Peugeot, Citroën and DS diesels of this generation.

Spruced-up facelift Opel Mokka officially priced
The Blitz's smallest SUV has benefited from a serious of updates inside and out, but not up front. Revealed towards the end of last year in Europe, Stellantis South Africa has released official price and spec details of the facelift Opel Mokka teased at its annual Media Connect event in Johannesburg last month. New outside A line-up once again consisting of two models, the updates to the first model that featured Rüsselsheim's Bold and Pure styling language comprises a new gloss black finish for the Opel Vizor grille and Opel blitz logo defined as the middle point or Opel Compass, removal of the various chrome accents, a restyled front bumper and a new Mokka nameplate script on the tailgate. ALSO READ: Opel unpacks facelift Mokka with series of simplified revisions Model-wise, the Edition, which replaces the Elegance, receives new 17-inch alloy wheels, while the carryover GS Line gets redesigned diamond-cut 18-inch alloys as well as a standard diamond black roof. New for both variants is a magnifying glass integrated into the LED headlights Opel says provides the same resolution as the Matrix IntelliLux diodes. Inside, both models now come equipped with the dual 10-inch displays for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system as part of the Opel Pure Panel, the latter still with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but with improved software as well as embedded satellite navigation. A wireless smartphone charger, frameless electro-chromatic rear view mirror and folding side mirrors rounds the specifications changes. Similar to the newly launched Grandland and the incoming Frontera, the Mokka's cabin makes the switch from type-A to type-C USB ports, while also gaining the same steering wheel with standard heating function on both, plus a silver finish for the centre console. Now standard across all models is a new steering and the pair of 10-inch displays. On the safety side, the Edition and GS Line get front and rear parking sensors from the off, with a reverse camera, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning included on the latter. Same powertrain Up front, no changes have taken place despite the roll-out of a mild-hybrid system on the Old Continent, as well as a bigger battery pack for the now renamed Mokka Electric. A toggle switch activated eight-speed automatic prevails as the sole available transmission option. Price Now on-sale, and soon to form part of Opel's three product SUV range below the Frontera and the Grandland, pricing for the Mokka continues to include a five-year/100 000 km warranty as plus a three-year/60 000 km service plan.
