James Gunn reveals chronological timeline of upcoming DC shows and movies — here's what you need to know

Tom's Guide19-05-2025

"Creature Commandos" has come and gone, "Superman" is right around the corner and "Peacemaker" season 2 is coming not long after that. So it makes sense to start asking questions about when in the DCU timeline these shows and movies all take place.
This is especially true when you account for the fact that, while Zach Snyder's "Snyderverse" DC movies (also known as the DC Extended Universe) aren't part of James Gunn's DCU, 2021's "The Suicide Squad" technically exists in the DCU and DCEU, as does the first season of "Peacemaker."
Thankfully, Gunn has stepped in to clarify the matter.
In response to a question on Threads, a fan asked the DC Studios CEO about the potentially convoluted timeline. "On HBO Max," asked Threads user @torinhl, "will you create a DCU timeline like how Disney+ has one for the MCU so you can watch in chronological order?"
Whether or not Gunn will ever do such a thing is still a mystery, as he never answered the question's main query. But he did reveal that, lucky for us, the DCU's potentially convoluted timeline isn't actually convoluted at all.
"As of now it's basically as the movies and shows come out," Gunn responded. "Although of course some of these feature flashbacks — 'Creature Commandos,' 'Superman,' 'Peacemaker,' 'Lanterns,' 'Supergirl.'
So there you have it! If you want to watch the DCU shows and movies in chronological order, you can just watch them by release date order. They're currently the same, and according to Gunn's comments, will remain that way until at least the release of "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" in theaters on June 26, 2026.

In case you need a refresher, here's the current chronological timeline of DC shows and movies, based on Gunn's comments:
Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made.

Netflix Reveals Episode Titles for THE SANDMAN Season 2 and Drops an Extra Surprise — GeekTyrant

Netflix has officially revealed the episode titles for The Sandman Season 2, which is its final season, and in a surprise twist, announced a bonus episode is on the way. Season 2 will arrive in two volumes: Volume 1 premieres July 3 with six episodes, followed by Volume 2 on July 24, which brings five more. But that's not all. Netflix will also drop a surprise twelfth episode, described as a bonus chapter, coming on July 31. The episode titles for the upcoming season are as rich and ominous as fans might hope. They are: 'Season of Mists' 'The Ruler of Hell' 'More Devils Than Vast Hell Can Hold' 'Brief Lives' 'The Sons of Orpheus' 'Family Blood' 'Time and Night' 'Fuel for the Fire' 'The Kindly Ones' 'Long Live the King' 'A Tale of Graceful Ends' 'Death: The High Cost of Living' Each title was accompanied by a first-look image, teasing familiar faces along with strange new ones. This final season is shaping up to be a visually rich and emotionally heavy run. The upcoming season will adapt several pivotal stories from Neil Gaiman's iconic comic, including 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'The Song of Orpheus.' In the next season: 'After a fateful reunion with his family, Dream of the Endless must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds. 'To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything. 'Based on the beloved award-winning DC comic series, the second season of The Sandman will tell Dream's story arc in full to its thrilling conclusion.' Returning to the dreamscape are the Endless: Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Despair (Donna Preston), and Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles). They'll be joined by new additions like Ruairi O'Connor as Orpheus, Freddie Fox as Loki, Clive Russell as Odin, and Laurence O'Fuarain as Thor a family of characters who are anything but ordinary. The Sandman comes from showrunner Allan Heinberg, who says he had already planned that the second season to be it's last before it was filmed in the summer of 2023. Netflix didn't confirm the end of the show until January of this year, around the same time of the sexual misconduct accusations made against The Sandman graphic novel author and series executive producer Neil Gaiman. The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 hits Netflix on July 3. Volume 2 follows on July 24, and the surprise finale arrives July 31.

AC/DC's Smashes Are Uniformly Soaring

AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" climbs to No. 5 on the U.K.'s Official Rock & Metal Singles chart as four of ... More the band's classics rise simultaneously. INDIO, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 07: (EDITORIAL USE ONLY) (L-R) Stevie Young, Brian Johnson, Angus Young, and Cliff Williams of AC/DC perform onstage during the Power Trip music festival at Empire Polo Club on October 07, 2023 in Indio, California. (Photo byfor Power Trip) Even without releasing anything new, AC/DC still commands an incredible amount of space on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart in the U.K. The group ranks among the most successful names on the list at the moment, with multiple smashes appearing at the same time. Not only does the Australian rock outfit take up more real estate than almost any other act, but this time around, every one of its tunes manages to climb as sales increase. These decades-old classics are, somehow, still improving after so much time. AC/DC fills four spaces on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart, meaning the group controls 10% of the entire 40-position ranking, which looks only at the bestselling tunes in those styles. This time around, all four smashes — which have already spent years on the list — manage to climb at least one spot, with most surging multiple rungs at once. "Thunderstruck" is AC/DC's highest-rising hit on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart this week, which is usually the case. The title climbs to No. 5, growing by one position from its previous placement at No. 6. Fellow time-tested winners "Back in Black," "Highway to Hell," and "You Shook Me All Night Long" also climb ever so slightly, appearing this frame at Nos. 21, 24, and 34, respectively. Among that bunch, the least successful track is "You Shook Me All Night Long," which is still regarded as a generation-defining win. The tune is the only one of the four that has yet to reach No. 1, as it has thus far stalled in the runner-up spot. It has also spent the least amount of time on the tally, with just 457 frames to its credit. That sum would be historic for almost any other act, but when it comes to AC/DC, the other three charting successes on the Official Rock & Metal Singles list have all passed 600 frames. "Thunderstruck" is the only one of AC/DC's songs that manages to appear on more than one tally this week. As it climbs on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart, it also advances on both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads lists, coming in at Nos. 66 and 62, respectively. In both instances, sales increased so much that "Thunderstruck" was able to push forward by more than 10 spots.

Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell go through a one-in-a-lifetime journey in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which just released a first-look trailer with some serious Suzume vibes. No, Farrell doesn't turn into a talking chair, but there are plenty of magical doors and a romance that feels larger than life. The trailer, which you can see above, follows Sarah (Robbie) and David (Farrell), two single strangers who meet at a mutual friend's wedding, and feel a connection. "It's funny how the most beautiful places make you feel the most alone," he tells her. "Maybe it just depends on the person you're with," she replies. Thanks to David's magical GPS, they meet again and decide to go on a Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Per the official synopsis, the film sees them living "a funny, fantastical, sweeping adventure together where they get to re-live important moments from their respective pasts, illuminating how they got to where they are in the present… and possibly getting a chance to alter their futures." Both Robbie and Farrell had the biggest success of their careers in recent years. Robbie made history as star and producer of the massive box office hit Barbie, while Farrell was nominated for an Oscar for his excellent performance in The Banshees of Inisherin and is now starring in DC's successful series The Penguin. They are joined in this new movie by Kevin Kline, Lily Rabe, Jodie Turner-Smith, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Billy Magnussen. The film was helmed by The Acolyte director Kogonada, who took inspiration not exactly from Makoto Shinkai's Suzume (despite the magical doors) but from Hayao Miyazaki's movies at Studio Ghibli. "That sort of magical lightness really connects you to our everyday experiences and all the challenges of being human, and is able to do both things at once," he told Vanity Fair. In fact, he brought on Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi, known for his work on Miyazaki's films, to create the score for the film. "It felt important to lean into the fantastic, but to also ground it in these landscapes," added Kogonada. Both Robbie and Farrell had the biggest success of their careers in recent years. Robbie made history with Barbie, and Farrell was nominated for an Oscar for The Banshees of Inisherin and is starring in HBO's successful crime series The Penguin. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey arrives in cinemas on September 19. In the meantime, check our guide for all upcoming movies in 2025 and beyond.
