Top criminologist Xanthe Mallett speaks about missing teen Pheobe Bishop, 17, after multiple bombshell twists

West Australian22-05-2025
Police have now
declared multiple crime scenes in the case of missing teen Pheobe Bishop
, 17, with a top criminologist saying it was an 'unusual' and 'concerning' development for the investigation.
Investigators have declared a crime scene at a property in the rural town of Gin Gin, 50km west of Bundaberg, Queensland, where Bishop lived with two people who were not direct family members.
Police have also seized a grey Hyundai ix35 which Bishop was last seen travelling in to Bundaberg Regional Airport and which belonged to one of the teenager's housemates.
Police are now working on the theory Bishop never made it to the airport last Thursday.
She was due to board a flight to Western Australia on May 15 but she never checked in
.
Criminologist Xanthe Mallett said police appeared very concerned for the teen's welfare, as she discussed the latest developments with Sunrise host Nat Barr on Thursday.
'Certainly, they are concerning developments,' Mallett said.
'It is unusual for the police to declare a crime scene at a (missing) person's home. They would obviously go there and search for clues as to where they may be ... but they are very concerned for Phoebe's welfare at this stage.'
Barr pressed Mallett on reports the teenager was seen arguing with the driver of the Hyundai.
Mallett said: 'That's very significant, because that may well be the last known sighting of Pheobe before she vanished.
'They will certainly be trying to plot the time between when the car left the property and when she vanished.
'They will be looking for witnesses that can corroborate anybody's movements, especially those people who may have been the last to see her or (the) last known to have seen her.
'(They will be) talking to as many people as possible, trying to figure out in the days and weeks and hours leading up to Pheobe's disappearance, who was with her.'
Bishop's bank account has also not been accessed since she was reported missing.
Bishop's mother has been pleading for help on social media to find her missing daughter.
'This is really worrying for the family and my heart goes out to them,' Mallett said.
'I've seen some of the social media posts and I really wish the police could provide better news a week on.
'But this is very suspicious.
'This is not a young woman who would normally disappear without speaking to her family. I'm very concerned for her as are the police.'
Pheobe is described as approximately 180cm tall, with a pale complexion, long dyed red hair, and hazel eyes.
She was last seen carrying luggage and wearing a green tank top and grey sweatpants.

Check your tickets! Sunrise's Matt Shirvington shares theory why $100 million Powerball winner hasn't come forward yet

Sunrise's Matt Shirvington has floated the idea the sole winner of Powerball's $100 million jackpot hasn't come forward yet as he might be in the middle of a messy divorce. The hunt for the winner has now intensified with the search now entering its ninth week. The winning ticket was purchased at Bondi Junction Newsagency, on Sydney's Oxford Street, on June 12. The Powerball draw 1517 had the numbers 28, 10, 3, 16, 31, 14 and 21, while the Powerball number was 6. In NSW, lotto winners have six years to claim their prize. Sharing his theory to The Lott's Matt Hart on Thursday, Shirvington quipped the winner was in the middle of a divorce and planning to wait a little longer before claiming the cash prize. Hart laughed it off, saying: 'We've heard lots of conspiracy theories. Are they on the International Space Station? On a cruise somewhere, completely oblivious? They could be! But it is probably something really benign. 'We talk to winners who come forward weeks or months after the draw and they say, 'It was stuck on the fridge the whole time. It was in a wallet, it was begging to be checked.' So check your ticket, check it twice.' Hart said The Lott has details of the time the winning ticket was sold and the type of ticket that was bought but is unable to release this information to the public. Hart explained The Lott is now running a campaign to help 'jog' someone's memory. Hart said: 'We are sprinting through the streets Sydney, not to win a race, but race to find a winner. Nine weeks since someone took home of Australia's third-biggest lottery winner, but where are they? 'So, we are here to jog some memories and get people to check their tickets.' Hart encouraged Lotto players to register their entries, which would allow The Lott to immediately know they were the winners. Hart said: 'Register your entries. 'If they had, we would have already given them the money, they would be off on a cruise somewhere or buying a house. 'It is really important to check your ticket. It could be worth $100 million.'

Chilling footage shows massive shark stalking surfers at iconic Aussie beach

Chilling footage has shown a massive shark stalking surfers at Bondi Beach. The drone footage shows the ocean predator just metres from the surfers as they waited to catch a wave. It was so close to the shore the person who took the video remarked that 'if it gets any closer to the beach, it will need a towel and sunscreen', Sunrise newsreader Edwina Bartholomew told viewers on Thursday. 'A shark has been spotted just over the breakers at Bondi Beach,' Bartholomew said of the video, which was taken this week and shared via the Instagram account Bondiripper. 'The stunning video starts up close, then zooms out. 'Have a look at how close he is to surfers and one of Australia's most famous beaches.' Credit: Bondiripper There are an average of 2.8 fatalities each year from shark attacks according to the Australian Shark-Incident Database. On average, there are seven incidents in which the person is uninjured. Three fatal shark attacks have been recorded this year, one in Queensland, one in South Australia and one in Western Australia. The clip comes just days after a nine-year-old boy was attacked by a shark at Tathra Beach, on the NSW South Coast, on Thursday. Bowie Daly told the ABC he felt a tug on his board. 'When I came back up, I saw a giant back and I realised it was a shark and then I started screaming for help,' he said. Fortunately Bowie came away from the incident unscathed.
