My50 passes can be activated via Touch 'n Go App starting July 1
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians will soon be able to reload and activate their My50 concession passes for public transportation digitally via the Touch 'n Go e-wallet using its Near Field Communication (NFC) cards, beginning July 1.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke, however, assured that the option to use the physical MyKad and renew My50 passes at train stations would still be available.
"Each My50 user takes about two to three minutes to renew their pass at Rapid KL counters.
"If there are 15 customers (in line), the waiting time can reach 45 minutes," he said.
He said there were complaints of busy counters such as the KLCC Light Rail Transit (LRT) station, Pasar Seni, KL Sentral and others.
Loke said Prasarana Malaysia Bhd spent RM2.75 million and worked with Touch 'n Go for six months to implement the digital feature.
The minister said the application uses the e-KYC (Know Your Customer) process to verify citizenship status, as the pass is only available to Malaysians.
The verification process typically takes one day for citizens.
"For a politically exposed person like me, maybe one week," he said at a press conference here today.
Loke also said that in a few months, records of train stations frequently used will be available via the Touch 'n Go e-wallet application.
"We (the government) are not going to track which station you go to every day, your patterns or any of that. This data will not be given to Prasarana.
"Prasarana will only know how many people are moving from one station to another.
"They will not know who the users are, because the data is captured within the Touch 'n Go e-wallet," he said, adding that the process is governed by the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
He also assured that NFC cards are in stock.
Separately, he said Prasarana must ensure that parking facilities at its Park 'n Ride stations are up to standard to encourage greater use of public transportation.
Nonetheless, the government is focusing on expanding first- and last-mile connectivity in high-density areas.
"We introduced Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) vans to encourage people to leave their cars at home and use public transport.
"I've asked Prasarana to identify LRT stations near apartments, condominiums, and flats. Our DRT must serve these areas," he said.

JPJ, APAD urged to monitor repeat traffic offenders closely
KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) have been instructed to enhance monitoring of repeat traffic offenders, particularly involving transport companies and commercial drivers. Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized the need for proactive measures following complaints of delayed enforcement. Loke stated, 'I have instructed JPJ and APAD to be more aggressive in their monitoring, particularly of repeat offenders, including companies or even drivers with multiple violations. Proactive action needs to be taken, including audits.' He added that audits would be conducted at transport companies regardless of whether an incident had occurred. The minister addressed concerns over lorry drivers hiding traffic summonses, leading to unpaid fines. He clarified that summonses remain the responsibility of the permit holder or company, not just the driver. 'It is their internal affair, including how they deal with their drivers,' he said. The Transport Ministry recently listed 11 goods vehicle operators and 17 express bus companies with high numbers of unpaid summonses. Separately, Loke discussed the My50 unlimited travel pass, currently valid for Prasarana Malaysia Bhd's rail and bus services. Talks are ongoing with Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) to introduce discounted monthly passes for KLIA Ekspres users. However, expanding the RM50 pass to all transport modes remains challenging. On parking issues at public transport stations, Loke encouraged the use of Rapid On-Demand (ROD) services to reduce congestion. 'The government cannot build park-and-ride facilities at every location. That's why we introduced ROD,' he said.

Will there be more single Malaysians after July 1 as SST causes nuptials to be delayed, cancelled?
IT MAY be a tad dramatic – taxes will force you stay single. Highlighting the impact of the 8% tax levied in practical terms, finfluencer Mashitah Sidek (@ringgitzz) explained (rather dramatically) how much more costly it will be for couples to tie the knot after July 1. This comes about as Malaysia will implement a significant expansion of its Sales and Services Tax (SST) to include new services such as rental or leasing, construction, finance, private healthcare education and beauty. Shared by pro-opposition proponent Siditious (@solidistor) on X, the post is obviously aimed at creating even more discontent at the Madani government for expanding its SST scope. The lawyer observed that more people would choose to stay single with the hike in matrimonial costs following the 8% SST imposition. Makin ramai la single lepas ni. Nak kahwin pun kena SST 8%. — Siditious (@Solisidtor) June 23, 2025 There's no denying that the impending SST which comes into effect next month will erode Malaysians' spending power regardless of their wealth level (imagine traders upping their prices in tandem with rising raw produces). The post by Mashitah has generated a lot of interest as evident from it having garnered 552.6K views at the time of writing alongside 3.8K likes, 2K shares and 108 comments. On the one hand, there are the Madani bashers who are seemingly sick and tired of the 'lies and unfulfilled promises'. Things are very different now from what was said during canvassing for election, it was claimed. One commenter even trotted out what he perceived would be the normal excuses proffered by government apologists. These included: 'Are you getting married every day?' 'If you can afford to spend RM20-30k, what is 8%?' 'You are not the only person paying this tax.' 'Just get hitched in Thailand. Even that has to be taught.' However, more than a few had differing views. For starters, there were those who simply thought that the young lady in the video was just spouting rubbish and by extension the poster who shared the clip. Getting married is easy, claimed one commenter, while blaming the likes of the poster for complicating matters. Yes, the cost-of-living crisis bites. But will a supposed RM800 hike cause a person to cancel a 'one-off or one's a lifetime' wedding? More pertinently, a number of commenters shared very useful advice – live within one's own means. Do not be wasteful with grand celebrations and large dowries during these tough economic times. A more frugal approach was counselled, beginning with a smaller guest list for the kenduri (wedding feast). Another commenter jokingly urged couples to simply beat the July 1 deadline. 'Where's the proof?' demanded one pro-Pakatan Harapan (PH) key board warrior who was clearly cynical about claims of declining marriages. At the end of the day, one commenter observed that he has never come across couples not tying the knot because of taxes! – June 26, 2025 Main image credit: BiblioAsia

My50 Pass Now Accessible Via TnG eWallet
The My50 unlimited travel pass will be available for digital purchase and activation through the Touch 'n Go (TNG) eWallet app beginning July 1, 2025, announced Prasarana Malaysia and the Touch 'n Go Group. The move is part of the government's push for public transport digitalisation and the broader national cashless agenda. Commuters will no longer need to queue at counters, as the My50 pass can now be activated directly via smartphone. Group President and Chief Executive Officer of Prasarana, Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, said the digitalisation of My50 is a progressive step that enhances user convenience, improves accessibility and saves time for daily commuters. The initiative is open to all Malaysian citizens, who can activate the pass after completing electronic identity verification on the app. The move is expected to benefit the existing 250,000 My50 users and encourage more urban residents to adopt public transport. Touch 'n Go Chief Executive Officer Praba Sangarajoo said the initiative reflects the group's commitment to delivering innovative, tech-driven services that meet the daily needs of Malaysians. He added that the strategic partnership between TNG, Prasarana and the Ministry of Transport marks a significant milestone in modernising the country's public transport infrastructure. Looking ahead, Prasarana also plans to expand digitalisation to other products such as the MyCity pass, aimed at reducing reliance on cash transactions and enhancing the overall travel experience.
