Relationship expert explains why some people struggle with commitment and how they can push through their fears.

Whether you're redownloading Hinge after 'swearing off dating apps forever," or online dating for the first time, chances are you've been guilty of 'ego-scrolling.'
Katie Dissanayake, the CEO and founder of the dating app 'After,' defines ego-scrolling as swiping through dating apps looking for easy validation, rather than meaningful connections or relationships.
'You're not even looking for a date, or often a real conversation, you're just looking for proof that you're still desirable,' she explains. 'It's almost like window shopping for love without the intention to buy.'
Instant social gratification and self-worth validation are among the most common motivations for using dating apps. Even after matching, users often get ghosted, misinterpret what the other person wants or have mismatched expectations, leaving those looking for love frustrated and burnt out.
Jordan Pickell, a trauma and relationship therapist, says ego-scrolling 'lowers the stakes around rejection, loneliness and the wanting to be desired.' She takes Dissanayake's analogy one step further: 'You're window shopping, and you don't have any intention of going into the store.'
Why do people 'ego-scroll' on dating apps?
Dissanayake attributes the rise in ego-scrolling to the loneliness epidemic and a collective increase in stress and unhappiness among young adults.
'Dating apps have become almost like an emotional pacifier,' she says. 'If you're bored, anxious or feeling invisible, getting a match, especially from someone you find really attractive, feels almost like a mini serotonin shot. And more often than not, that becomes the goal.'
Notifications of new matches can feel similar to the dopamine rush some people receive from Instagram likes. 'A lot of dating apps were perfectly engineered to feed us that dopamine fix," Dissanayake says.
Pickell says ego-scrollers may also be hoping to protect themselves against rejection or the vulnerability of a real relationship.
'People want to be seen, but it's too scary to be known," she explains. "So it gives this feeling of being seen and this validation without having to be emotionally invested.'
However, Amy Morin, psychotherapist and author of "13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do,' says ego-scrolling can be beneficial in limited scenarios. For instance, someone who has recently gone through a divorce or breakup may not be ready to date, but needs a reminder that there are other options. And still, it's not going to fix the underlying issues. If you're struggling with low self-esteem or loneliness, it can feel like a 'Band-Aid for a minute,' but not the cure.

Mismatched expectations cause dating app fatigue
Many of Pickell's clients are frustrated by the lack of mutual engagement on dating apps. They make a match, send a message and never receive a response. 'It's disheartening,' she says.
Dissanayake says ghosting, miscommunication and dating app fatigue often occur when one side of a match seeks a genuine connection, and another is just looking to feel good.
For those who want to ego-scroll, it is important to be upfront about your intentions and not waste your matches' time. 'Remember that the other people on dating apps are real human beings with their own fears of rejection and feelings of loneliness,' Pickell adds.

Checking in with yourself
If you're ready to stop ego-scrolling, the first step is checking in with yourself. What are your needs, boundaries and goals?
Pickell encourages people to notice what emotions arise as they swipe through dating apps. It may be time to take a break when you feel depleted and alienated rather than energized and connected. Another sign that the apps are unfulfilling is if using them 'feels like a chore,' Morin says.
Dissanayake says there may not be a quick fix for ego-scrolling, but it starts with 'knowing your self-worth before you try to meet anybody else' and accepting where you are on that journey.

Warning: This article contains images of infected rabbits, which some readers may find disturbing. Residents in Fort Collins near Denver recently began posting pictures of the cottontail bunnies, causing a stir online. "This is how the zombie virus starts," posted one Instagram user on a post showing the rabbits. "We've got freaking zombie rabbits now?!" posted another on YouTube. So what's going on? Firstly, the pictures are real - despite some wishing they weren't. "One time I need this to be AI," wrote one Instagram user on a post showing the horned bunnies. The rabbits are suffering from a relatively harmless disease called Shope Papilloma Virus, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Although the wildlife agency is getting calls from people spotting the infected rabbits in Fort Collins, they're not an unusual sight, according to spokesperson Kara Van Hoose. The disease is mainly found in America's Midwest, according to the University of Missouri, and is more noticeable in the summer, when the fleas and ticks that spread the virus are most active. The virus can also spread through rabbit-to-rabbit contact but not to other species like humans or dogs and cats, according to Ms Van Hoose. The horn-like growths, or papillomas, are harmless to the bunnies, unless they grow on sensitive areas like the eyes or mouth or interfere with eating. Once the rabbits' immune systems have fought the virus, the growths will disappear. Although infected wild rabbits usually don't need treatment, it can be dangerous to pet rabbits, so officials recommend getting pet bunnies treated by a vet. The mythical jackalope It's not a new illness, and is even thought to have inspired the centuries-old myth of the "jackalope", a rabbit with antelope antlers. Although hunters had long known about the disease, it was first scientifically reported in 1931 by Richard E Shope - hence the name. Since then, the rabbits' warts and horns have contributed to life-saving scientific understanding, including how viruses can be linked to cancer, like the HPV virus to cervical cancer.

Nearly everyone is overloaded with information these days. In each minute of every day, 138.9 million reels are played on Instagram and Facebook, according to a 2024 report by Domo called "Data Never Sleeps." Consuming this much content on a daily basis has shown to have negative effects on a person's ability to focus. Since 2004, psychologist Gloria Mark has studied attention spans, and her research shows that people's attention when viewing a screen decreased from an average of two and half minutes in 2004 to an average of 47 seconds in 2016 — which is about the length of many videos on social media. But the impacts don't stop there. In Harvard physician Dr. Aditi Nerurkar's book, "The 5 Resets: Rewire Your Brain and Body for Less Stress and More Resilience," she discusses yet another side effect of information overload: "popcorn brain." Popcorn brain is when "our brains get habituated to this constant streaming of information, making it harder for us to look away and disconnect from our devices, slow down our thoughts, and live fully offline," Nerurkar wrote in her book. "While not a true medical diagnosis, popcorn brain is a growing cultural phenomenon." Here's how to gain more control over what you're consuming, and shift your popcorn brain. The concept of popcorn brain was created by researcher David Levy in 2011, and it can look like staying up-to-date with the news to frequently checking your social media to see who's engaging with what you're sharing. The overload of information can lower your productivity levels, affect your memory and cause you to feel more stressed. To get out of the loop of picking up your phone every few minutes, and ditch your popcorn brain, Nerurkar suggests four practices: Ditching your smartphone won't be easy when you first start, she acknowledged. It's important to have helpful alternatives for when you want to reach for your phone like a notepad, a fidget toy, a book or a quick exercise like walking around the room. "Rewiring your brain and overcoming your primal urge to scroll is a major feat," Nerurkar said. "In time, your stress will thank you because you'll be deciding who and what gets your attention, not a device in the palm of your hand."

ASMR for sleep left me awake and annoyed — here's how I actually fall asleep fast

After seeing just how many people rely on ASMR for calming down at night and falling asleep fast I wanted to give it a go. My interest was particularly piqued when I came across a video on Instagram where a woman was whispering into a microphone, imitating a doctor's receptionist booking you in for an appointment. My immediate reaction was 'how on earth is that going to help me sleep?' I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that booking a doctor's appointment is not the most calming experience, and if it came down to either listening to that or buying one of the best mattresses to help me fall asleep faster, I know which option I'd go for. I then wandered down a rabbit hole of bizarre ASMR videos, each with millions of views and likes. From people sloppily eating big piles of food (known as Mukbang) to people scraping and tapping random objects, the world of ASMR was both fascinating and sometimes slightly disturbing. But if it works for everyone else, why shouldn't I give it a go? I spoke to ASMR expert, Craig Richard, about this fall asleep fast method that's growing in popularity, the science behind it and why it didn't work so well for me after I eventually tried it out. Craig Richards, co-author of the first brain scan study of ASMR, founder of the website 'ASMR University' and author of the ASMR book 'Brain Tingles', describes ASMR as 'a deeply relaxing feeling often accompanied by light and pleasurable brain tingles.' People seek out ASMR triggers because it helps them to feel comforted, less stressed, more relaxed, and more sleepy, 'The specific aspects that stimulate ASMR are called 'ASMR triggers' and they include whispering, soft talking, light touches, caring gazes, and gentle sounds,' Richards explains. 'Research data from our team and data published by others demonstrate that the majority of people seek out ASMR triggers because it helps them to feel comforted, less stressed, more relaxed, and more sleepy,' Richards says. The core elements such as shushing, softly spoken words and kindness are usually seen in ASMR, too. 'ASMR triggers are effective at soothing others because they convey care and safety to the other person, which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system to induce a relaxed state,' Richards explains. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for our rest and digest processes, compared to our sympathetic nervous system known for our fight-or-flight response. This relaxed state in both the body and mind can help people fall asleep fast. I wanted to stay away from any fake appointments or eating videos, mainly because I knew I would be cringing too hard to fall asleep. I found a playlist of calming ASMR on Spotify and pressed play. After skipping through a few (too much whispering, too much cringe), I settled on nature sounds, safe in an audio world of running water and rustling leaves. Initially, I found it relaxing, but the tinny sounds from my phone on the pillow quickly became irritating. That's when I realized I most likely needed a good pair of headphones to get the full benefits of ASMR. Still, I persevered and swiped until I found some classic tapping and scratching. Instead of the 'tingly, brain massaging' feeling I was promised, I was almost flinching at the sounds. They were too loud, too quiet and, unfortunately, too annoying. After 20 minutes, I gave up and enjoyed silence. The next two nights I was better prepared. I used my AirPods instead of the phone speakers and spent time finding the right playlist on Spotify. I settled on 'ASMR for Sleeping (no talking)' which seemed like a good choice for me. I started with 'Tingly Brain Massage Mic Scratching to Make You Sleep' and was excited to experience what everyone else seemed to think was a great feeling. I settled down, turned the lights off and pressed play. Tiny little scratches and tapping started and for a second I thought I was getting an enjoyable feeling from it. But it was soon replaced with irritation. It almost sounded like someone breathing heavily in my ear (my pet peeve, especially on public transport). And now with headphones in, it was even more Richards advice that 'before anyone concludes that ASMR doesn't work for them, they should sample a wider variety of ASMR content,' I skipped to the next one. But after a couple of different sounds (including Lego building) I realized ASMR just didn't work for me. I gave up and returned to what actually helps me sleep. 'If you tried a lot of ASMR content and it often made you feel annoyed or angry, then you are probably experiencing misophonia,' Richards explains. 'Misophonia is an extremely negative reaction to specific sounds. Sounds like whispering, typing, tapping, and chewing can trigger ASMR in one person and misophonia in another person,' he adds. 'The key thing that misophonia and ASMR have in common is hypersensitivity to a stimulus, often a sound like whispering, chewing, or tapping,' Richards explains. 'Some brain scan studies of ASMR-sensitive people and misophonia-sensitive people have shown that some of their brain regions are wired differently compared to control groups.' So, if you're anything like me, you might need a slightly different nighttime routine to help you fall asleep fast. If I'm struggling to sleep, grabbing a sleep mask and my earplugs usually helps me drift off quickly. By blocking out ambient noise and light, I can create an environment that's conducive to sleep. I also find that if I don't have the option to open my eyes, my brain stops trying to look for stimulation and eventually switches off. I opt for a wrap around blackout silk sleep mask that also covers my ears. It's comfortable and cool (but still unlikely to stay on all night). For earplugs, I've ditched the abrasive foam ones and replaced them with soft silicone Loop Quiet 2s. Both work very well and don't cause any discomfort during the night. If I've been lying awake, I can almost guarantee that my head is filling with anxious thoughts and replaying conversations from the last few weeks. I find this cycle really difficult to break, and if I don't break it, there's potential for me to be lying awake with a racing heart until the early hours. That was until I tried cognitive shuffling. This visualization method aims to replicate the way your brain naturally behaves before you fall asleep. All you have to do is think of a random object, imagine what it looks like and then visualize another completely random, unrelated object. You continue in this way until your brain stops trying to make sense of your thoughts and essentially 'switches off', allowing you to fall asleep. It's surprisingly effective. Falling asleep fast isn't just about what happens when you're lying awake. The evening leading up to your bedtime is just as important. Repeating the same calming activities every morning not only relaxes the body and mind but signals to you that it's time to wind down and sleep. Personally, i find that a warm bath with essential oils and some time carved out for book reading works a treat. It's also a good idea to stop scrolling on your phone before bed, as this can be too stimulating, especially for anxious minds.
