'What If An Infiltrator Enters': SC Refuses To Put Stay On Detention Of Bengali Migrant Workers
The apex court declined an interim stay on the detention of Muslim Bengali migrant workers, citing concerns about the potential consequences of not monitoring illegal immigration.
The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to put an interim stay on the detention and deportation of Muslim Bengali migrant workers, highlighting concerns over unchecked illegal entry of migrants and their assimilation in Indian society, while stressing a mechanism to identify bonafide workers.
In a stern message, Justice Surya Kant said, 'Suppose someone has come illegally in India, how to deal with that situation? If they don't detain, he will disappear."
'Some mechanism required for bonafide workers…either state of origin can issue some kind of card…and local police accept it as prima facie proof of his having come for livelihood," Justice Kant added.
The hearing came amid concerns that Bengali-speaking individuals were detained in the national capital on suspicion of being Bangladeshi citizens without verifying their identities. The West Bengal government has slammed the BJP-led Centre for targeting Bengalis, while Kolkata Police introduced a helpline for migrant workers from the state facing harassment and identity checks elsewhere.
'States where these migrant workers are working have the right to inquire from their state of origin about their bonafide but the problem is in the interregnum. If we pass any interim orders, then it will have consequences, especially those who have illegally come from across the border and need to be deported under the law," the bench comprising Justices Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said.

Last Updated: Islamabad, Aug 16 (PTI) Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir has ruled out any change in the leadership, describing rumours about the removal of President Asif Ali Zardari as completely false and against both the government and the establishment, a media report said on Saturday. In July, social media reports began to circulate that President Zardari may be asked to step down and that the army chief would take over the top office. However, top government officials — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi — rejected such claims. Suhail Warraich, a columnist for the Jang media group, claimed in an article published Saturday that the army chief had spoken to him in person on the matter during a recent meeting in Brussels. Munir briefly stayed in Belgium on his return from last week's visit to the United States. 'The talk started with politics, especially on rumours that there is some effort to change the president of Pakistan as well as the prime minister. Field Marshal Munir clearly said, during both the Brussels gathering and in his two-hour discussion with me, that the rumours about a change were completely false," Warraich claimed in the column published in the Urdu daily Jang. The article claimed that Munir also outlined his ambitions in the Brussels gathering, saying that: 'God has made me protector of the country. I do not desire any position other than that." 'On a question about politics, he [Munir] said that political reconciliation is possible only if there is a sincere apology," the report read. Although it was not clear who Munir was referring to, it can be inferred that he may have been referring to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its incarcerated leader, Imran Khan. On foreign relations, Munir was said to have expressed confidence in maintaining equilibrium between the US and China. 'We will not sacrifice one friend for the other," Munir was quoted as saying. The army chief also described President Donald Trump's efforts for peace as 'genuine", and said Pakistan had taken the lead in nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize, which was then followed by other nations. 1 2 Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that the BJP govt at the Centre should include the book 'Muslims Against Partition' by Shamsul Islam in the NCERT-recommended syllabi. U.S. team may defer August 25 India visit for trade pact talks: Official
A U.S. team, which was scheduled to visit India from August 25, for the next round of negotiations for the bilateral trade agreement is likely to defer the meeting to a later date, an official said. So far, five rounds of talks have been completed for the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) and a U.S. team is scheduled to visit India for the sixth round of talks. The negotiations were scheduled from August 25-29. "This visit is likely to be rescheduled," the official, who did not wish to be named, said. Deferment or rescheduling of the meeting assumes significance as the U.S. has announced a staggering 50% duty on Indian goods. The U.S. is pressing for greater market access in politically sensitive areas such as agri and dairy sectors, which India cannot accept as it affects the livelihood of small and marginal farmers. India has stated that it will not compromise the interests of farmers and cattle rearers. The U.S. and India have announced plans to conclude the first phase of BTA by fall (September-October) of 2025. The two countries are aiming at more than doubling the bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, from the present $191 billion. While the 25% tariff on Indian goods entering the U.S. has come into effect from August 7, an additional 25%, was announced on India as penalty for buying crude oil and military equipment from Russia, will come into effect from August 27. During April-July, the country's exports to the U.S. increased 21.64% to $33.53 billion, while imports rose 12.33% to $17.41 billion, according to Commerce Ministry data. The U.S. was the largest trading partner of India in the April-July period ($12.56 billion bilateral trade) 2025-26. India's exports to America are recording positive growth since April this year.
