He highlighted that Sabah's rich resources – ranging from minerals and petroleum to seafood and renewable energy – offer wide-ranging opportunities for sustainable progress.
Advertisement His speech was delivered by State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. Hajiji said Sabah's collaboration with Petronas has yielded significant equity gains in oil and gas projects, including the recent 25 per cent stake in the USD3.1 billion PFLNG 3 project in Sipitang. Since September 2020, Sabah has secured RM17.41 billion in approved manufacturing investments, with 52 companies already operating and creating over 3,600 jobs. New investment proposals between 2022 and 2024 total RM42.3 billion, projected to generate nearly 33,000 additional jobs for Sabahans. To meet investor demand, new industrial parks have been approved in Kota Belud, Beaufort, and Kudat, along with improved connectivity such as the new Kota Kinabalu–Taipei–Fukuoka route. The State is also positioning itself as a regional leader in the Blue Economy and green energy, including Otec power plants and hydropower projects to support future energy and water needs. Meanwhile, Sabah was named Malaysia's Most Outstanding State for 2024 at the awards show. Masidi accepted the award on behalf of the Chief Minister from the award's chief judge, Datuk Seri Azman Ujang. The recognition was based on assessments by a panel of professionals from various fields, supported by comprehensive data reviewed by expert advisers. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? X accuses French prosecutors of politically motivated free speech probe

PARIS: Elon Musk's social media platform X has accused French prosecutors of launching a politically motivated criminal investigation, claiming it threatens users' free speech. The company denied all allegations and stated it would not comply with the probe. Earlier this month, Paris prosecutors escalated a preliminary investigation into X over suspected algorithmic bias and fraudulent data extraction. Authorities enlisted police to examine potential wrongdoing by the company or its executives. 'Based on what we know so far, X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech,' the platform posted on its Global Government Affairs account. 'For these reasons, X has not acceded to the French authorities' demands, as we have a legal right to do.' In a sharp rebuke, X also alleged the probe was instigated by French lawmaker Eric Bothorel, who accused the platform of manipulating its algorithm for foreign interference purposes. X dismissed the claim as 'completely false.' The Paris prosecutors' office and Bothorel did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk, a former ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has repeatedly criticized European governments for what he sees as attacks on free speech. He has also expressed support for some of the region's far-right parties. The French investigation could widen tensions between Washington and European capitals over online discourse regulations. Former Trump administration officials have previously accused platforms of censoring right-wing voices globally. X further objected to prosecutors' demands for access to its recommendation algorithm and real-time user post data, which would be analyzed by researchers David Chavalarias and Maziyar Panahi. The platform accused both of showing 'open hostility towards X,' raising concerns about the probe's impartiality. Neither researcher responded immediately to requests for comment. X also criticized the use of organized crime charges in the investigation, which could allow authorities to wiretap employees' personal devices. The case follows similar legal scrutiny in France against Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, who faces judicial supervision over alleged organized crime on his platform. Durov denies wrongdoing. Earlier this month, Musk agreed with Durov's claim that French officials were 'waging a crusade against free speech and tech progress,' responding simply, 'true.' - Reuters

Sabah must prioritize passenger safety at KKIA

Chin KOTA KINABALU (July 21): Despite Sabah's strong tourism growth— three million arrivals in 2024 (exceeding targets) and RM4.88 billion in revenue — passengers at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) continue to face unacceptable conditions. However due to AirAsia not using aerobridges forces travelers, including elderly visitors and families, to endure dangerous tarmac walks during frequent thunderstorms, risking slips, falls, and lightning exposure, said Sabah MCA treasurer Dato' Chin Kim Hiung. He said aerobridge fees cost just RM85 per use (less than 25 sen per passenger). Chin urged the Sabah State Government to emulate Sarawak's enforced aerobridge usage, through direct negotiations with AirAsia, federal authorities, and Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM). 'The use of aerobridge should be enforced at all Sabah airports in the interest of passenger safety and convenience. Sabah's tourists and residents deserve safe, dignified travel. 'The Sabah State Government must act decisively — not with appeals, but with enforceable demands,' Chin added.

SMM dismisses viral jet photo claims, cites cleared inquiry

Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Mineral Management Sdn Bhd (SMM) has dismissed allegations arising from a viral photo showing its CEO and company secretary near a private jet, confirming it was taken during a sanctioned work trip tied to foreign investment discussions. The company clarified that the photo, taken in August 2024, was from a follow-up visit to an Indonesian mining conglomerate after the Board-approved due diligence process initiated by its former CEO in early 2023. Advertisement SMM stated that both CEO Natasha Sim and company secretary Emily Chong had already cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission last December, with an internal inquiry in February 2025 finding no misconduct or personal benefit involved. It emphasised that the CEO holds no licensing authority, and strongly refuted any claims of wrongdoing, calling the allegations misleading and defamatory. SMM believes the renewed attention may be linked to the ongoing legal action it has filed against two individuals, and warned it will take legal steps against those who continue to spread baseless claims. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
