Yahoo13-02-2025
The Brief
Season 13 of "The Masked Singer" premiered with Group A contestants, including Honey Pot, who was revealed as comedian Cedric the Entertainer.
Cedric the Entertainer, known for roles in "Barbershop," "Madagascar," and "The Steve Harvey Show," was the first to be unmasked in the season's debut.
Next week's episode will celebrate DreamWorks' 30th anniversary with "Shrek Night" featuring performances of iconic songs from the movie franchise.
LOS ANGELES - On Wednesday's lucky Season 13 premiere of "The Masked Singer," a new batch of contestants entered the competition to battle it out, once again, for the coveted title and trophy.
On the season's first episode, Group A (Ant, Honey Pot, Paparazzo, Fuzzy Peas and Coral) sang their hearts out.
But, one contestant was forced to "take it off" and be revealed — and this time Honey Pot would be sent home.
What we know
The panelists were shocked on Wednesday evening when Honey Pot was revealed as Cedric the Entertainer – a stand-up comedian, actor and television host, known for being one of the original Kings of Comedy.
"When she sees this, she's gonna be so excited," the 60-year-old comedian said of his granddaughter watching. "That's the thing I'm most excited about."
Cedric the Entertainer is known for his roles in film and television series, including the "Barbershop" trilogy, the "Madagascar" trilogy, "The Steve Harvey Show" and "Ice Age." In 2019, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
What's next
Next week, "The Masked Singer" is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the animation studio DreamWorks with "Shrek Night."
The panelists and host Nick Cannon will open the show with a rendition of "Rockstar" by Smashmouth – a song popularized in the movie "Shrek."
Group A will perform again and channel their inner fairytale by performing songs from or inspired by the movie franchise, from "Accidentally In Love" to "Hallelujah" to "I'm A Believer" and "Wide Awake."
Big picture view
This season, fifteen brand new masked celebrities will compete for the coveted prize of The Golden Mask Trophy.
Panelists Ken Jeong, Rita Ora, Robin Thicke and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, alongside host Nick Cannon, return to the series.
The new season will commemorate acclaimed franchises "Shrek" and "Ghostbusters," along with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of The Grand Ole Opry. The new season will also pay tribute to the Rat Pack by honoring the iconic crooners with salutes to their music catalogues.
"The Masked Singer" will also see the return of fan-favorite themes such as "Soundtrack of My Life," "Decades" and "Boy Bands," with other all-new themes including "Olympus: Unmasking the Gods" and "Carnival."
The themes will be woven throughout the performers' song selections, costumes and set design, and may even provide clues as to who is under the mask!
What we know
New this season, Lucky Duck will be introduced and will be pointing out subtle hints and offering up tasty tidbits throughout the season to help fans guess which celebrities are hiding beneath the masks and elaborate costumes.

BBC axes Survivor after one series

Survivor has been axed by the BBC. The reality series proved to be a ratings flop, and host Joel Dommett has now confirmed that it won't return for a second series. Joel, 40 - who has also hosted The Masked Singer since 2020 - told The Sun newspaper: "It just shows you how nothing is a given in telly. I thought Survivor would be huge. I thought that would be my job for the next 20 years. "I've done shows and thought that's not coming back and it keeps coming back and then you do something like Survivor, which you think is guaranteed and it doesn't come back." Earlier this year, Joel revealed that he was hoping for a second series of Survivor. The TV star also promised that changes would be made if the show came back. In an interview with the Metro newspaper, he said: 'Fingers crossed … there's a lot of stuff that we would do slightly differently. 'Like with every first series, it's hard, so I think a second series would be amazing. 'Everyone seems to really love it, so I'm excited that – hopefully – [we get to] do another one." The first episode of the rebooted Survivor - which launched in October 2023 - only received 2.6 million viewers, despite airing at the prime-time slot of 8:25pm on a Saturday, after Strictly Come Dancing. Survivor's second episode was then replaced by David Attenborough's Planet Earth III. A TV insider also previously claimed that the BBC was not keen on renewing the programme for another series. The source told the Daily Mail newspaper: 'It has come as a huge surprise that Survivor is coming back. 'It is viewed by many within the Beeb as being a very expensive flop and the general view was that it should – and would – be canned. 'To spend that amount of money on a programme that is watched by such few people surely is a silly way to spend public money."
