Football fan took own life after 'embarrassment' over racist gesture probe

A football supporter who killed himself hours after police launched a probe into an alleged racist gesture made at a football match 'could not face the embarrassment' of a potential club ban or jail term, an inquest heard.
HGV driver Andrew Paul Hewitt, 52, was found hanging at his family home in Flint, North Wales, on December 1, the day after he attended an away fixture at National League rivals Warrington Town. Following the match, video emerged online of a 'small group' of Chester fans making gestures towards a Warrington player, a hearing at County Hall, Ruthin, was told on Wednesday.
Only a few hours before his death, the keen Chester FC fan had been filmed appearing to make an offensive monkey gesture towards a black player who played for local rivals Warrington Town while their team celebrated a goal. Chester FC released a statement in which it expressed its discontent with the video and later said an individual had been identified and police would take appropriate action, the inquest heard.
In a statement, Mr Hewitt's brother Alan said the father-of-one's behaviour was 'completely out of character'. He said: 'Andrew got caught up in the moment.'
He added that his brother must have read the club statement, together with comments online, and thought he would either face a lengthy ban or a custodial sentence, and 'could not face the embarrassment of either outcome'.
A note was found at Mr Hewitt's home in Palace Close which read: 'I f***** up. Sorry.' He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1.35am, in what assistant coroner Kate Robertson called an "apparent act of self harm", at his inquest opening in December, reports The Mirror.
A number of family members attended the brief hearing at County Hall where Mr Hewitt was described as a 'hard-working individual' who had followed Chester FC home and away for 40 years, and was in a long-term relationship with Hayley Williams.
Recording a conclusion of suicide, HM Coroner for North Wales John Gittins expressed his condolences as he told the family: 'It is a very tragic loss in very extreme, difficult circumstances. I can see this is a gentleman who is very much missed and the hole he has left is very difficult to fill in all of your lives.'
Speaking after Andrew's death, a neighbour said they were shocked at what happened. "We all found out it was Andy who'd been accused of being racist. It doesn't sound like him," they said.
"He's a lovely lad and they are a great family. We're all stunned that he took his life over this. I feel so sorry for the family."
Another said they had seen the ambulances outside his home before later learning what had happened - and said Mr Hewitt's partner had been left "devastated" by his death. National League North club Chester FC posted on social media in December, following his death, saying: "It is with sadness Chester FC has been made aware of the tragic death of the individual involved."
In a previous statement released after the Warrington Town game, the club had said they were "angry and dismayed at an alleged instance of racism" and had "identified the individual in question", with information due to be shared with the FA and Cheshire Police.

Netflix star urges people who loved ‘murdered' mum not to attend stepdad's funeral amid death probe

Callum said he wants 'justice' for his beloved mother FUNERAL BAN PLEA Netflix star urges people who loved 'murdered' mum not to attend stepdad's funeral amid death probe A NETFLIX star has urged anyone who loved his 'murdered' mum not to attend her husband's funeral - after cops suspect he killed her before taking his own life. Dawn Kerr and Andrew Searle, who were in their 60s, were found dead at their idyllic French hamlet of Les Pesquies, near Villefranche-de-Rouergue in February this year. 4 Callum Kerr and his mum Dawn Kerr 4 Callum walked him mum down the aisle at her wedding to Andrew Searle in 2023 Advertisement 4 The remote hamlet in France where the couple were found dead Police initially believed the deaths could have been linked to Andrew's former job as an organised crime fraud investigator - but all the evidence now points to a murder-suicide. Dawn's son Callum Kerr, who played PC George Kiss in soap opera Hollyoaks and appeared in Netflix's Virgin River, today issued a plea for any friends of his mum not to attend her 'killer's funeral. The Scots actor had proudly walked his mother down the aisle during her marriage to Andrew in September 2023. Advertisement But writing on Instagram, he said: 'In the absence of any evidence suggesting third-party involvement in the tragic death of our mother, Dawn Kerr, the prevailing hypothesis remains that of a murder-suicide. 'Our mother was killed by multiple blows to the head, and Andrew was found deceased by hanging. 'His injuries are consistent with self-hanging, and no defensive wounds were found on his body. 'There is also no evidence whatsoever of any third party's involvement at this stage. Advertisement 'While the official investigation is still ongoing, we cannot ignore the circumstances as they stand. 'For this reason, we must respectfully but firmly request that our mother not be included in any way in the funeral arrangements being made for Andrew. 'Please do not share photographs of them together. Please do not attend Andrew's service if you were a friend of our mother. 'Fun-loving' family of four found dead in their home as cops confirm chilling reason they were called 'It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death. 'We ask for understanding, privacy and respect as we continue to grieve and seek justice for our mum.' Advertisement Dawn was found lying in front of her house, partly undressed, while Andrew was found hanged from a radiator. French prosecutors revealed in February: 'A box containing jewellery was found near to her, but no item or weapon which could have caused the injuries were located.' They also said: 'Mr Searle, who was found hanged… did not show any visible defensive injuries.' Cash was found in the couple's bedroom and their home appeared to have been 'roughly searched'. Police also considered the possibility of a hitman linked to Andrew's anti-fraud work in the financial crime sector - or a botched burglary. Investigators found his mobile device proved 'particularly helpful', after he was spotted making animated calls in previous days. An investigating source said in February: 'There is a mine of information and recent calls made by Mr Searle which are providing vital clues.' Andrew and Dawn were labelled by local friends as being a 'popular' and 'happy couple'. Advertisement The British expats had been living in Aveyron for five years, according to French prosecutors.

Police initially probed whether it was a gangland hit linked to his former job, but are now treating the tragedy as a murder-suicide. Dawn's heartbroken son Callum Kerr, an actor and singer, and his grieving sister Amanda want their mum left out of her husband's funeral. They have 'firmly' requested Andrew's family not to include her in their service and urged Dawn's friends not to go or post pictures of the couple together. Callum and Amanda wrote in a family statement posted on their social media today: 'It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death.' The siblings claim murder-suicide is the 'prevailing hypothesis', adding: 'There is also no evidence whatsoever of any third party's involvement at this stage'. They will be climbing Sicily's Mount Etna to mark what would have been their mum's 58th birthday on May 18 next year. A GoFundMe page in their mum's previous name Dawn Kerr has raised more than £3,400 for domestic violence charity Women's Aid. It reads: 'In February, our mum was taken from us. Callum also starred in Netflix's Virgin River - playing young Everett, Mel's father, in the most recent series. The 30-year-old has over 135,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and released his new track Cold Beer Cold just hours after his mum's death. Dawn was found lying in front of her house, partly undressed, while Andrew was found hanged from a radiator. It remains unclear when exactly the pair died. A post-mortem found Dawn died from a "significant head wound" but it remains unclear how long she had received that before the shocking discovery of their bodies. Police said she suffered "multiple blows to the head with a blunt and sharp-edged object." 6 6 Andrew was last seen on CCTV at a tobacconist

‘I don't want you to be consumed by guilt' – Dad of crash victim (8) comforts lorry driver

Ms Moore (46) and Abbigael (8) of Cois Coille, Kilkelly Road, Swinford, Co Mayo, died instantly when their car collided with an oncoming lorry Saturday 6th of July Swinford Co Mayo The funeral cortege of Aisling Moore and her daughter Abbigael Tournié Moore are carried through Swinford after the funeral mass which took place at at Our Lady Help of Christians , Swinford. The Mother and Daughter were tragically killed on the N26 road close to Swinford on Tuesday 2nd July. Photo Conor McKeown The father of a little girl who died alongside her mother in a collision between their car and a lorry, wrote a letter offering his 'heartfelt support' to the lorry driver. There were emotional scenes at the inquest of Aisling Moore and her daughter Abbigael Tournie Moore, who lost their lives in the accident on the N26 in Mayo on July 2 last year. Ms Moore (46) and Abbigael (8) of Cois Coille, Kilkelly Road, Swinford, Co Mayo, died instantly when their car collided with an oncoming lorry despite efforts by both drivers to avoid impact, the inquest heard. Coroner for Mayo, Dr Eleanor Fitzgerald, returned a verdict of accidental death for both Ms Moore and Abbigael who died after Ms Moore accidentally crossed into the path of the lorry at Callow, on the N26 between Foxford and Swinford. The inquest heard evidence from a witness who was travelling behind Ms Moore, who saw her car miss a left-hand bend and veer into the path of the lorry on the opposite side. Martin Crean, a HGV driver with West Coast Express in Enniscrone, Co Sligo, struggled to contain his composure throughout the inquest and as he described the moments before the collision. The court heard Mr Crean's Scania articulated lorry and Ms Moore's Toyota Avensis car were both in perfect working order before the collision. The inquest heard that as Mr Crean neared the bend, Ms Moore crossed in front of him and hit a grass verge and she manoeuvred back across the road. At the same time, Mr Crean braked hard, but as he was pulling a 45-foot trailer it caused the lorry to jackknife out of control. Both Ms Moore and her daughter, who were the only occupants of the car, suffered extensive injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Saturday 6th of July Swinford Co Mayo The funeral cortege of Aisling Moore and her daughter Abbigael Tournié Moore are carried through Swinford after the funeral mass which took place at at Our Lady Help of Christians , Swinford. The Mother and Daughter were tragically killed on the N26 road close to Swinford on Tuesday 2nd July. Photo Conor McKeown Mr Crean wept and was comforted by his wife as Dr Fitzgerald read a letter written by Abbigael's father, Arnaud Tournie, to the inquest at Ballina courthouse, at his request. Mr Tournie wrote the letter 'with the full weight of a father's sorrow', but also 'with a sincere desire' to offer Mr Crean 'some comfort'. 'My daughter and her mother, Abbigael and Aisling, lost their lives in the tragic accident, and since then my life – and our lives – have been turned upside down,' Mr Tournie wrote. 'No words can express the depth of my grief. Yet, despite this immense pain, I want you to know that I do not hold you responsible for this tragedy. 'I understand how deeply such an event can mark the life of someone who, through no fault of their own, becomes part of it. That is why I want to extend my heartfelt support to you. I know you must carry this image with you every day, and that it cannot be easy – for you or your loved ones. 'I do not want you to be consumed by guilt, because this accident was neither the result of negligence nor of any wrongdoing on your part. 'You did what you could, and no one is ever truly prepared for such a moment. It is a tragedy – unfathomable and unfair – for all of us. 'Please receive these words as a gesture of compassion, of humanity, and, I hope, a small measure of solace. I wish you, with time, the inner peace needed to move forward and to honour, in your own way, the memory of these two beautiful souls taken too soon.' The inquest heard the mother and daughter had spent a few days at the Ocean Sands Hotel in Enniscrone and were returning home to Swinford to prepare for Abbigael to spend time with her father in France. The accommodation manager at the hotel, Johnny Burke, recalled saying goodbye as they left the hotel that day. Mr Burke said he later heard a woman and child had been killed close to Swinford and got a bad feeling. He said he rang Swinford garda station, but they would not confirm their identities, 'but I knew', he said. 'I didn't sleep a wink that night,' he added. Garda John Naughton, who examined the scene, explained that conditions were dry at the time and speed was not a factor. He said an examination of Mr Crean's tachograph found no breaches. It also showed that in the seconds up to and including impact, he had slowed from 80km to 43km per hour. Gda Naughton said braking hard caused the lorry to jackknife and there was no way Mr Crean could recover control. Sergeant John Melia, who led the investigation, said Mr Crean was tested for alcohol and drugs following the accident and found to be negative for both. Dr Tamas Nemeth, pathologist in Mayo University Hospital, said both deaths were due to injuries sustained during the accident. Sympathising with the family, Dr Fitzgerald recorded verdicts of accidental death. She also expressed sympathy with Mr Crean and hoped he takes comfort in Mr Tournie's letter. Dr Fitzgerald also commended the vast work done by gardaí and led by Sgt Melia. Court presenter Sergeant Seán McHale also expressed sympathy to Mr Tournie and the Moore family along with Mr Crean and all the witnesses who gave evidence. He said it was evident the tragedy had been traumatic for everybody. He also commended his colleagues in the gardaí and the emergency services.
