De'Aaron Fox agrees to massive $229 million extension with Spurs
The Spurs are ensuring their star guard sticks around for years to come. Point guard De'Aaron Fox agreed to a four-year, $229 million maximum extension with San Antonio on Monday afternoon, keeping him under contract through the 2029-30 season, according to ESPN. The Spurs acquired the one-time All-Star and All-NBA selection from the Kings last season. He appeared in 17 games for his new team before being shut down for the season due to finger surgery. Advertisement 4 De'Aaron Fox was traded to the Spurs at the trade deadline last season. AP Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists per game in his short time in a Spurs jersey before the injury. Before being dealt to San Antonio, which was per his request, Fox averaged 25 points, 6.1 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game with the Kings. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post While the one-time All-Star played just five games with Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama, the two are said to have developed a close relationship and will be the leaders of a young team looking to blossom into a contender. The 27-year-old Fox will also be the leader of a young backcourt he'll share with Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. 4 Stephon Castle starred as a rookie for the Spurs. AP Advertisement The former UConn Huskie Castle is coming off a Rookie of the Year season in which he averaged 14.7 points, 4.1 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game. Harper was the No. 2 pick in June's NBA draft out of Rutgers, where he averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game on 48.4 percent shooting from the field and 33.3 percent from deep. 4 Rookie Dylan Harper is looking to be the third straight Spur to win Rookie of the Year. NBAE via Getty Images Advertisement While all three guards are naturally ball-dominant, the 6-foot-6 frames of Harper and Castle should provide flexibility alongside the 6-foot-3 Fox, which is certainly what San Antonio is banking on with Fox's extension. Fox is entering his ninth NBA season and is just one of two players to average 20 points, five assists and a steal in each of the past six seasons, along with Luka Doncic.

Browns QB Shedeur Sanders focuses on his job in wake of dad's cancer fight
Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders sat out much of Saturday's practice because of arm soreness, but Sanders told reporters Monday he was 'thankful' to be back at practice and healthy enough to participate. Sanders had reported some soreness to members of the team's medical staff Saturday and said he believes it was due to 'starting and stopping' as he competes in a four-man quarterback competition in his first NFL training camp. Through 10 practices, Sanders is the only one of the four Browns quarterbacks who hasn't taken any reps with the first-string offense. Last week, he worked with the No. 2 offense against the No. 1 defense in one drill. Advertisement Next up for the Browns is a visit to Charlotte for a Wednesday joint practice with the Carolina Panthers ahead of a Friday night preseason game. Sanders expects to make his NFL debut in that game, but he said he has not yet been informed of the team's playing time plans. Monday marked Sanders' first interview since his father and college coach, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, publicly disclosed his fight with bladder cancer over the last several months. Deion Sanders is now back coaching the University of Colorado, and Shedeur Sanders spoke of concentrating on his job during his father's medical fight. 'I would say (the biggest thing) is definitely staying focused mentally,' Shedeur said. 'Dad, he's one person that he'll handle his. We'll handle what we have to do. It was something that we really didn't need to have a formal conversation about because (Deion) was like, 'Y'all need to focus on what y'all need to focus on. Y'all can't sit here and feel sorry for me.'' Though Deion Sanders visited Shedeur's brother Shiloh, an undrafted rookie safety with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in training camp late last month, Shedeur Sanders said he asked his father not to visit Browns camp. 'I don't want him coming to see me right now because I want to get to where I want to go, then for him to see me,' Shedeur Sanders said. 'I don't want him to come and see me get a couple reps, and he is cheering like a good dad. Like, nah, you can't be proud of me right now. I've got to get to where I'm going, and I know it's a lot I've got to do to get there. 'I just want everything that I'm doing (to) just focus on this time, and I don't want no distractions because we know how the media, we know how everybody would take it and take away from the team, just from him being my own dad showing up. So, it is a gift and a curse at the same time.' Advertisement Sanders went through some extra stretching and loosening of his right arm Monday before he started his usual pre-practice throws. He said he made the decision to be cautious on Saturday because his body wasn't fully responding — and that he thought about what his father might think about things. 'I always hear my dad's voice in my mind all the time,' Sanders said. 'With him, it's always 'bone or blood' — his motto. … So of course I was definitely hearing his voice in the back of my head, but at the end of the day, I want to be productive. I want to give you guys the best work, and I want to be at my best at all times.' Though Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel would be limited in Monday's practice after experiencing hamstring tightness, Gabriel took his normal reps until the final drill of practice, when Sanders operated both the No. 2 and No. 3 offenses in a drill simulating a late-game scramble situation. Sanders also took all seven reps in the team's post-practice opportunity period for young players. Previously, Gabriel and Sanders had split snaps evenly in opportunity periods. Stefanski has not revealed his plans for this week's joint practice or preseason opener, but it's believed that Gabriel and Sanders will get most of the work in Friday night's game.

Sophie Cunningham on Caitlin Clark's immense popularity: "The whole world is watching her. It is a cult following"
Sophie Cunningham on Caitlin Clark's immense popularity: "The whole world is watching her. It is a cult following" originally appeared on Basketball Network. The WNBA has been dealing with a massive boom in popularity over the past few years, and among all the stars fueling this surge, one name stands tallest: Caitlin Clark. Ever since the former Iowa Hawkeye captivated audiences at the NCAA level, her fame has only grown exponentially. Even though there have been murmurs about some players feeling envious of the unprecedented attention she's received, Sophie Cunningham, the recent addition to the Indiana Fever, has made it clear that within the locker room, there's nothing but admiration for what Clark brings to the game. And coming from a seven-year veteran who has seen the evolution of the league firsthand, that endorsement carries a lot of weight. Sophie is both the enforcer and the admirer If there's been one thing Cunningham has made clear since arriving in Indiana, it's that she has Clark's back. The fiery guard-forward has quickly stepped into the role of protector, standing up for the superstar in various on-court scuffles and letting it be known that the Fever's franchise player isn't going to be pushed around all that easily, not without a proper fight back at least. But beyond the elbows and hard screens, there's also deep respect for what Clark represents. Cunningham understands that being alongside such a phenomenon isn't just about sharing the spotlight; it's about embracing this one-of-a-kind moment, leaning into the chaos and helping her teammate navigate the levels of attention, from both the media and the fellow players, that come with being the face of the whole sport. "Not even just the league (WNBA), but women's basketball as a whole around the world," Cunningham said about her teammate's impact on the game. "I think it's awesome, I think it's so funny that she is 22, 23 years old, and the whole world is watching her. It is a cult following… Anywhere you go. It is a home game wherever we play. She's got security with her 24/7, people are outrageous. Think about the most famous person that you've ever met, times it by 10 or 20," she added. That kind of following, in Cunningham's eyes, doesn't just elevate Clark, but it elevates everyone in the is dealing with a nagging groin injury Clark's unprecedented stardom comes at a pivotal moment for the WNBA. The league just wrapped up an All-Star Weekend that showcased not only its talent but also the growing demands for better pay, improved conditions and wider recognition. The league and the players are now in full-steam-ahead mode for their place in sports. As for Clark, her absence has been felt. Currently dealing with a groin injury that has kept her out for a big chunk of the season, the 23-year-old phenom has played in just 13 games and missed 15. The Fever are 15–12, sitting in the middle of the pack as they wait for their superstar to get back on the floor. The team will be extra careful in pushing for her return, considering the long-term importance of Clark's. But make no mistake, the moment CC returns, the buzz will be louder than ever. Because, as Cunningham said, this isn't just about one player. It's about an entire sport riding the wave of a once-in-a-generation story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 1, 2025, where it first appeared.
