Money Talks: Jenny Claffey - ‘Affording something doesn't mean you have the money in your bank account'

Having cut her teeth in podcasting as co-host of runaway smash It Galz, Claffey went solo in 2021 with the launch of Red Room, a true crime podcast that dives deep into cults, conspiracy theories and unsolved mysteries.
She's also a regular presence on social media, sharing insights and recommendations on various standout attractions in pop culture.
On this episode of Money Talks, she pulls back the curtain on the financial highs and lows of content creation, and the determining factors thereof.
'The first year [of the It Galz podcast], actually I think I exactly matched my wage,' she tells host Katie Byrne. 'So, I was like, OK, if I just kept doing this, I'm still making a pretty good wage. And then the next year I think we doubled that.
'We were doing really, really well. I think I always knew that would happen, though, just in terms of how a business goes – you can go really up and then you might go down and then you find somewhere that's a bit more steady. Also, it was hard to gauge because our biggest year was Covid.'
Claffey also reveals her spending obsessions and apprehensions, explains how to build an online community, and recalls key financial advice that still pays off today.

Money Talks: Fionnuala Jones: 'I really don't panic about things that I probably should be panicking about'

Whether it's waxing lyrical about high-profile entertainment disasters on her Flop Culture podcast, assessing the latest showbiz news on Newstalk's Movies & Booze slot, or interviewing big-name stars on The Six O'Clock Show, Jones' diary is usually pretty full. And then there's a constant stream of online content creation to consider, not to mention a dedication to sustainable fashion that she's committed to in recent years. 'I was always into vintage secondhand fashion, but I was also growing really disillusioned with fast fashion and buying things really cheaply and the stuff coming and being like... 'I hate this', or it wasn't lasting, or the quality wasn't really good,' she tells Katie Byrne on the latest episode of the Money Talks podcast. 'And I was also getting more cognisant of the fact that people were being paid very little to make these clothes that I didn't even like. So, I decided to test myself. I've been trying to continue to add to my wardrobe as opposed to looking at my wardrobe and going 'right, I need to get rid of all of this', because that's not sustainable. Sustainable is wearing the clothes you already have.' In conversation with host Katie Byrne, Jones provides an off-the-cuff guide for those looking to swap out fast fashion for something eco-friendlier and more affordable. She also discusses the joys and challenges of getting into the property market at a young age, and the precarious nature of the influencer industry. Money Talks: Rob Lipsett - ‘You can spend €20,000 on a bottle of champagne but it's also easy to live the normal Spanish life'

'Who's got a bigger account on Instagram – Tesla or Elon? These billionaires are building a personal brand, and you think you're too good to build a personal brand? Come off it, have some humility,' he says. Lipsett has been as dedicated to brand-building as body-building since he first invested in a decent camera and started a YouTube channel. Since then, he's managed to attract an audience that is invested in both his physical fitness acumen and his overall day-to-day lifestyle. On this episode, Lipsett takes us inside his renovation project in Marbella, which he says is a reflection of the life he's built for himself. He also tells us why even a short run on Love Island is good for business, why your 'worst' job can end up being your most important one, and how to get the most out of nutrition on a tight budget. All that and much more on the latest edition of Money Talks with Katie Byrne.
