Disney's New Amazon Deal: Does Ad Targeting Upgrade Justify a Buy?

Disney's New Amazon Deal: Does Ad Targeting Upgrade Justify a Buy?

Globe and Mail5 hours ago

Disney 's DIS recent partnership with Amazon AMZN -owned Amazon Ads represents a strategic move to enhance its advertising capabilities, but investors should exercise patience before adding shares to their portfolios. While the integration of Disney's Real-Time Ad Exchange with Amazon's demand-side platform promises improved ad targeting and revenue optimization, the deal alone does not constitute a compelling reason to buy Disney stock at current levels.
The partnership, announced at the Cannes Lions Festival, grants Amazon DSP direct access to premium inventory across Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu platforms. This makes Amazon only the third demand-side platform, alongside Google and The Trade Desk, to integrate with Disney's DRAX system. The collaboration enables advertisers to combine Disney's audience data with Amazon's extensive commerce insights, creating more precise targeting capabilities that could theoretically command higher advertising rates.
Disney's Bold Move to Support Ad-Supported Streaming Tiers
The Amazon partnership addresses a critical need for Disney's advertising business as the company seeks to maximize revenues from its ad-supported streaming tiers. By leveraging Amazon's commerce data, Disney can offer advertisers more sophisticated targeting options, potentially reducing ad frequency for consumers while improving campaign effectiveness. This enhanced capability could prove valuable as Madison Avenue grapples with an oversupply of connected TV inventory, particularly as more streaming services introduce ad-supported options.
However, the integration's impact on Disney's financial performance remains uncertain. The partnership will launch with select advertisers in the third quarter of 2025, meaning meaningful revenue contributions are unlikely to materialize until fiscal 2026. Additionally, while the deal expands Disney's addressable advertising market internationally to countries, including France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, the advertising business remains a relatively small portion of Disney's overall revenues compared to its Experiences and traditional content businesses.
The announcement follows Disney's solid second-quarter fiscal 2025 performance, which demonstrated the company's continued execution across its strategic priorities. Revenues increased 7% to $23.6 billion, while adjusted earnings per share grew 20% compared to the prior year. The Entertainment segment showed particular strength with operating income rising 61 percent, driven by improved Direct-to-Consumer results and Content Sales/Licensing performance.
Disney's streaming business continues its trajectory toward profitability, with Entertainment Direct-to-Consumer operating income reaching $336 million in the quarter. The company ended the period with more than 180 million Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, representing an increase of 2.5 million from the previous quarter. Disney+ specifically grew to 126 million subscribers, demonstrating the platform's continued appeal despite increased competition in the streaming landscape.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal 2025 revenues is pegged at $94.89 billion, indicating 3.86% year-over-year growth, with earnings expected to increase 15.9% to $5.76 per share. These projections suggest steady growth ahead.

Valuation Concerns and Competitive Pressures
Despite strong operational performance, Disney faces significant headwinds that warrant caution from investors. The company operates in an increasingly competitive streaming environment where content costs continue to escalate while subscription growth faces natural limits. Netflix NFLX, Amazon Prime Video, and newer entrants like Apple AAPL -owned Apple TV+ are all vying for the same subscriber base and advertising dollars, potentially pressuring Disney's ability to raise prices or maintain market share.
Shares of Disney have returned 6% in the year-to-date period against the Zacks Consumer Discretionary sector's growth of 4.8%. While Netflix has returned 38.4% year to date, shares of Amazon and Apple have lost 1.7% and 22%, respectively.
Disney's Year-to-date Performance
The traditional linear television business continues its secular decline, with Disney's Linear Networks segment showing mixed results. The company's Sports segment also experienced headwinds, with operating income declining 12% due to higher programming costs despite revenue growth. Disney's Experiences segment, historically a reliable growth driver, showed resilience with operating income increasing 9%. However, international parks faced softness, particularly in China, reflecting broader macroeconomic uncertainties that could impact the company's global operations.
From a valuation perspective, Disney shares have reflected these mixed fundamentals. The company currently trades at 19.32 times forward 12-month price-to-earnings, notably below the Zacks Media Conglomerates industry average of 20.26 times. Investors should consider whether current prices adequately reflect the ongoing transformation challenges facing traditional media companies.

Investment Recommendation
The Amazon partnership represents a positive step in Disney's advertising evolution, but it does not fundamentally alter the company's near-term investment thesis. Current shareholders should maintain their positions given Disney's strong brand portfolio, improving streaming economics, and robust Experiences business. However, prospective investors may benefit from waiting for a better entry point, potentially in fiscal 2026, when the benefits of the Amazon partnership and other strategic initiatives become more apparent in financial results.
Disney remains a high-quality company with valuable intellectual property and diverse revenue streams, but the stock requires patience as management navigates the ongoing media industry transformation. Disney currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

Buss family agrees to sell controlling stake of Lakers with record $10 billion US valuation: report

The Buss family has agreed to sell the controlling stake of the Los Angeles Lakers to TWG Global CEO Mark Walter, doing so with a franchise valuation of $10 billion US — the most ever for a professional sports franchise, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Wednesday. As part of the deal, Jeanie Buss — whose family has had control of the Lakers since her father bought the team in 1979 — intends to remain as governor, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side immediately announced details. It is not clear how much of the Lakers that Walter is acquiring. He was part of a group that bought 27 per cent of the Lakers in 2021. Walter is part of the ownership of many other franchises, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chelsea FC, the Los Angeles Sparks and several auto racing teams.

Could $10,000 Invested in Palantir Stock When It Went Public in 2020 Turn Into $1 million by 2030?

If you invested $10,000 in Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) stock when it hit the market through a direct listing roughly five years ago and held on, you would have had a holding worth about $144,630 as of the close of trading on June 14. That would far exceed the approximately $19,000 position you'd have if you'd invested that same sum in an S&P 500 exchange-traded fund. Palantir's excellent performance demonstrates the wealth-creating potential of American tech companies. That said, past performance is no guarantee of future results. To grow that stake into a $1 million position by this time in 2030, Palantir stock would have to gain 591% over the next five years, or produce a compound annual growth rate of 47%. So how likely is that to happen? Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Palantir serves a booming industry Palantir's momentum can be credited to its unique business niche in big data analytics. Its software-as-a-service (SaaS) platforms analyze vast volumes of information to help clients discover actionable trends, reduce waste, and combat fraud. This technology synergizes with generative artificial intelligence (AI), and over the last three years, Palantir has incorporated large language models (LLMs) into its software to offer even faster insights. On the surface, it would appear that the AI industry could offer enough potential to help Palantir's stock maintain its market-beating growth rate. According to analysts at S&P Global, the generative AI market could expand at a compound annual rate of 40% through 2029. While Palantir will face plenty of competition, its focus on military AI systems could give it a wide moat as governments race to modernize their military and intelligence technology. Palantir is already working with the armed forces of Ukraine and Israel to improve their battlefield targeting. And in April, it finalized a deal to provide its Palantir Maven Smart System -- an AI-enabled platform designed to enhance combat awareness -- to the North American Treaty Organization (NATO). Public and employee pressure has at times led rival tech companies such as Alphabet to shun or cancel controversial defense contracts. Palantir vigorously pursues them. Respectable business performance Unsurprisingly, Palantir has experienced healthy demand for its services. In the first quarter, its revenue grew by 55% year over year to $628 million, driven by a tremendous expansion in U.S. commercial and government clients (although the growth of its international business has lagged), while net income more than doubled to $214 million. CEO Alex Karp seems wildly optimistic about his company's potential, stating in the Q1 letter to shareholders that generative AI is experiencing a "ravenous whirlwind of adoption as an increasing number of institutions grasp the magnitude of the shift that is washing over industry and government." While these remarks may make investors feel like they can still get in on the ground floor of a millionaire-making opportunity, the reality is more complicated. While Palantir's business seems to be heating up, much of its future growth is already priced into its current valuation. The stock price has grown at a far faster pace than its actual operations. PLTR data by YCharts. As a result, Palantir now trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple (P/E) of 250 -- wildly above the S&P 500's average of 28. To say the shares are priced for perfection would be an understatement. Can Palantir grow into its lofty valuation? Palantir's leadership seems to have attracted a cult following, similar to the one that lauds Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Both companies' stocks seem to trade heavily based on hype and optimism rather than on cold, hard business fundamentals. The result has been shares changing hands at unreasonably high valuations that leave them with limited growth potential. Even though Palantir boasts a compelling business model, it's unlikely to produce the same sort of explosive stock price appreciation in the next five years that it enjoyed in the previous five. Investors who own the shares should consider taking profits. Should you invest $1,000 in Palantir Technologies right now? Reddit Expands Ad Platform With New Suite: Can the Launch Pay Off?

Reddit RDDT continues to scale its advertising business by turning real-time community engagement into a source of strategic insights for brands. As advertisers seek platforms that combine scale with authenticity, Reddit's community-led model is gaining momentum across performance and brand campaigns. RDDT recently launched Community Intelligence, a new suite designed to help marketers monitor live conversations across subreddits, extract trend signals and optimize campaign decisions. The toolset enables advertisers to analyze sentiment, product mentions and emerging topics in real-time, thereby transforming Reddit's open-conversation network into a dynamic planning engine. The new suite builds on Reddit Pro and supports full-funnel execution — from awareness to conversion. With Community Intelligence, Reddit positions itself as a platform that turns live user experiences into actionable insights, enabling brands to track cultural relevance and act on user-driven demand patterns. User engagement continues to strengthen on Reddit, acting as a key catalyst for its advertising growth. In the first quarter of 2025, Weekly Active Users reached 401 million, while Daily Active Uniques hit 108 million — both up 31% year over year. The platform's community-led discussions and open-web visibility are attracting users seeking authentic, experience-driven content across diverse topics. The growing engagement is driving strong advertiser adoption. In the first quarter of 2025, Reddit reported advertising revenue of $358.6 million — up 61% year over year — and beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 5.9%. Performance campaigns accounted for 60% of total ad spend, reflecting growing traction among mid- and lower-funnel advertisers. As marketers invest in context-aware tools to navigate shifting consumer behavior, Reddit expects Community Intelligence to deepen advertiser traction and support recurring ad-revenue momentum. RDDT Faces Stiff Competition Reddit's advertising business faces stiff competition from Alphabet GOOGL and Meta Platforms META, both of which are expanding their AI-driven advertising capabilities. Alphabet is strengthening its lead through Google Ads and YouTube, offering large-scale performance marketing across search and video. Alphabet's ecosystem is deeply integrated with user behavior signals, but it lacks Reddit's community-led format that enables real-time insight from open discussions. Meta Platforms continues to strengthen its advertising capabilities across Facebook, Instagram and Reels. With tools like Advantage+ and automated delivery, META Platforms enables personalized ad campaigns for global brands. However, unlike Reddit, Meta Platforms does not surface real-time user discussions that help advertisers track community sentiment and emerging trends. RDDT's Share Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates RDDT shares have plunged 18.1% year to date, while the broader Zacks Computer & Technology sector returned 1.6% and the Zacks Internet - Software industry increased 13%. RDDT's Performance Reddit stock is trading at a premium, with a forward 12-month Price/Sales of 11.8X compared with the Computer and Technology sector's 6.36X. Reddit has a Value Score of F. RDDT's Valuation The Zacks Consensus Estimate for second-quarter 2025 earnings is pegged at 19 cents per share, unchanged over the past 30 days, implying an improvement from the year-ago quarter's loss of 6 cents per share. The consensus mark for Reddit's fiscal 2025 earnings is pegged at $1.21 per share, which has remained unchanged over the past 30 days. The figure marks an improvement over fiscal 2024's loss of $3.33 per share. Reddit currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
