Brazilian President Says World Can't Remain Indifferent To Gaza Genocide
Speaking at the plenary session of the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the president said: "We cannot remain indifferent to the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza, the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians and the use of hunger as a weapon of war."
His comments come as Gaza truce talks between Israel and Hamas resumed in Qatar, with Hamas saying late Friday that it had submitted a 'positive' response to mediators regarding a recent Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange proposal.

ASEAN calls for prudence in South China Sea, lauds progress on COC
ASEAN on Thursday called for all parties involved in the South China Sea to exercise 'wisdom and prudence' in managing the delicate situation in the strategic waterway, to ensure that geopolitical tensions do not escalate. Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the fragility of global peace is becoming more apparent by the day, and therefore ASEAN must redouble its efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region are maintained. 'We must therefore ensure that geopolitical tensions do not escalate or threaten to undermine security and global trade in the South China Sea,' he said in his opening remarks at the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with China in conjunction with the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings here on Thursday. Mohamad said ASEAN welcomed the progress on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC) and hopes for continued positive momentum. 'We are confident that with the full commitment of all parties in the negotiations, we should be able to conclude an effective and substantive COC in the not-too-distant future,' he said. Mohamad also addressed the growing global concerns over nuclear weapons and the non-proliferation regime, saying that ASEAN welcomes China's readiness to become the first Nuclear Weapon State (NWS) to sign and ratify the Protocol to the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty without reservations. 'This would mark a significant step forward, demonstrating China's leadership and commitment to a nuclear weapon-free Southeast Asia,' he said. He added that Malaysia, as the Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, is committed to working with all ASEAN member states and China to further advance the partnership to deliver real benefits to the peoples. — BERNAMA

Brazil And Seven Others Hit By Tariff Letters
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced import tariffs ranging from 20% to 50% on goods from eight countries, including Brazil, effective Aug 1, according to Chinese news agency Xinhua. Trump revealed letters to the leaders of the Philippines, Brunei, Moldova, Algeria, Iraq, Libya and Sri Lanka on his social media platform, Truth Social. The letters stated that the Philippines would face a 20% tariff, Brunei and Moldova 25% and Libya, Iraq, Algeria and Sri Lanka 30%. Brazil was singled out for the steepest penalty, 50% tariffs. In his letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Trump accused Brazil of 'insidious attacks on Free Elections and basic American freedoms,' calling the country's actions 'an international disgrace.' Responding on platform X, President Lula warned that 'any unilateral action to increase tariffs will be met with reciprocal economic measures under Brazilian law.' Brazil's Vice President Geraldo Alckmin called the move unfair. 'I see no reason to raise tariffs on Brazil. Brazil is not a problem for the United States, this must be made clear,' he said. Alckmin also noted that while the US runs a global trade deficit, it enjoys a trade surplus with Brazil. The move escalates Trump's recent tariff spree, signalling a hardline stance on trade as his re-election campaign intensifies. Related
