Navi Mumbai student thrashed for asking classmates to speak Marathi: ‘Raj Thackeray will…'
The incident occurred when the student, reportedly annoyed with constant messages in Hindi, replied in Marathi, telling everyone to "speak in Marathi language or else Raj Thackeray will come," NDTV reported.
The remark, made in reference to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray, whose party has been at the centre of the current Marathi controversy, triggered an angry exchange on the messaging group.
According to police sources, the student's comment sparked an argument on the WhatsApp group, which kept escalating.

Around 10:30am the following morning, four students, one of whom was Faizan Naik, assaulted the student who had requested them to use Marathi outside their college in Vashi. Naik also struck the 20-year-old on the head with a hockey stick, leaving him seriously hurt, the publication added.
The injured student is undergoing treatment, and an FIR has been filed against the accused.
The attack has provoked severe responses from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. MNS spokesperson Gajanan Kale, who met with both the student and police authorities, called for stern and speedy action against the accused.

"A First Information Report has been filed at the Vashi police station regarding a quarrel between two groups. The quarrel was over an argument between two people about remarks on the group," Assistant Commissioner of Police (Vashi) Adinath Budhwant told NDTV.

The language row in Maharashtra began when the state government planned to introduce Hindi as a third language in primary schools in the state. The order had sparked huge backlash from the opposition and language advocacy groups in the state.

The row further gained traction following Raj Thackeray's speech during a recent victory rally in Mumbai, where he told Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers to ensure that non-Marathi speakers in the city learn the local language, but refrained from recording any violent acts.

Two dead, many injured in Barabanki temple stampede
At least two people died and several others were injured in a stampede-like situation near Barabanki's Ausaneshwar temple early Monday morning, officials said. (PTI PHOTO) The Barabanki police said the incident occurred after a monkey tugged at an electric wire, causing it to fall on a tin shed. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has taken notice of the incident and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. 'He has directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations,' the chief minister's office posted on X in Hindi. According to local officials, the two deceased were identified as Prashant Kumar (16) and Ramesh Kumar (35). The state government has announced immediate relief of ₹5 lakh to the family members of both the deceased. There was a rush from 1am onwards at the temple on the third Monday of the Hindu holy month of Sawan. Over 2000 devotees were there at the time of the incident. It was an accident and rescue operations were promptly initiated following which no more casualties were reported, said additional director general (ADG) of police, Lucknow zone, Sujit Pandey who rushed to the spot under the Haidergarh police station limits, nearly 40 kilometres from the Barabanki district headquarters after the CM's directives. Pandey inspected the incident site as well as crowd management measures. Most of the injured people, or those who fainted due to the crowd rush, are back home after first aid, said Pandey who also ordered videography of the site. He said normalcy had returned at the temple and devotees are having darshan in a routine manner. District magistrate Shashank Tripathi said a stampede-like situation was reported at the Ausaneshwar temple during 'Jalabhishek at around 2.30 am'. 'Devotees were offering prayers when a monkey jumped onto an electric wire, causing it to fall on a shed. This led to an electric current passing through the structure. Medical treatment of the injured is underway. Around 19 people were injured, with two in a serious condition.' Barabanki chief medical officer (CMO) Avadhesh Yadav told media persons that 19 injured individuals were brought to the Haidergarh Community Health Center (CHC), where two were declared dead. A few others were then referred to Trivediganj CHC, while one was sent to the district hospital for further treatment. The Barabanki stampede comes a day after a similar incident in Haridwar's Mansa Devi Temple where eight people died. On January 29, a stampede occurred during the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj during which several people lost their lives. On July 2, 2024, 121 people, mainly women and children, died in a stampede after a religious congregation in UP's Hathras.

VCs draw flak for attending Gyan Sabha conclave
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State ministers have lashed out against university vice chancellors for participating in the Gyan Sabha, which was attended by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. 'Our educational institutions have students from different communities, and it is impossible to let those spaces become preparation yards to build Hindu Rashtra,' Higher Education Minister R Bindu stated in a release. Citing that working towards the RSS agenda will saffronise and destroy the reputation of the position of vice chancellors, she said that the participating officers will have to keep their heads down before the academic society. Adding that the Sangh Parivar has turned against Kerala, she mentioned that the outfit is trying to tie the state to the Brahminical values. 'Sangh is trying to create an ideological atmosphere in universities and higher education centres that will aid them to build a religious nation- based on Manu's scriptures,' she stated. Education Minister V Sivankutty said that the governor is using his powers to and forcefully make the vice-chancellors participate in these events. 'I am disappointed to say that the governor has become the biggest spokesperson of the RSS in Kerala today,' he said. He opined that if the government representatives attended the programme without its permission, they should be removed. 'Kerala's citizens don't wish to keep the people who attend RSS programmes in these posts,' he said. Tourism Minister P A Mohammed Riyas said that the BJP is making active efforts to make universities in non-BJP-ruled states the centres for discord. LSG Minister M B Rajesh called the move 'not expected from vice chancellors', KPCC president Sunny Joseph too condemned the act.
