Jagan demands cancellation of Pulivendula, Vontimitta local body bypolls
Amaravati, Aug 13 (PTI) YSRCP supremo YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday demanded the cancellation of Pulivendula and Vontimitta ZPTC bypolls held on August 12, demanding that they be reconducted under the protection of Central security agencies.
Reddy alleged that the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) bypolls were held in an undemocratic and tyrannical manner.
Addressing a press conference at the YSRCP central office in Tadepalli, the former chief minister alleged that the TDP-led NDA government restrained party polling agents from executing their duties and scared voters from exercising their franchise to rig votes.
'Cancel the two elections (Pulivendula & Vontimitta held on Tuesday) and re-conduct them under the protection of Central forces," said Reddy, adding that democracy is not visible in the state and totally absent.
Accompanied by the two YSRCP candidates who fought the Pulivendula and Vontimitta ZPTC bypolls, Reddy said they will move the Court.
According to Reddy, State Election Commissioner Nilam Sawhney played a 'dummy' role and failed to rein in the alleged excesses of the ruling party leaders and cadres and also police who allegedly worked in a biased manner.
Meanwhile, there was no immediate reaction from the TDP. PTI STH KH

Ramalinga Reddy calls for Kannada Shloka training in Muzrai temples
Bengaluru: Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy announced that priests in Karnataka's Muzrai temples will be instructed to learn and recite shlokas in Kannada during worship. The directive aims to promote the use of the Kannada language in religious rituals. During the Legislative Council's Question Hour, BJP member Bharathi Shetty pointed out that while Tamil Nadu temples recite shlokas in Tamil, Karnataka temples still predominantly use Sanskrit. She suggested that Karnataka temples should also introduce Kannada shloka recitation, citing the example of Hiremagalur Kannan, known for his Kannada recitations. Shetty further raised concerns about cleanliness in temples and urged for maintenance on the lines of Tirupati. Responding, Reddy said that after years of delay, certificates for Agama training are now being issued, and priests will be guided to practise Kannada shlokas. He added that from August 15, plastic will be banned in temples, alongside stricter cleanliness measures. State to act on bike taxi services as per High Court order Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has stated that the government will comply with the High Court's order regarding the reinstatement of bike taxi services in the state. Responding to BJP MLC D.S. Arun in the Legislative Council, Reddy explained that bike taxi services, including Rapido, were halted due to rule violations by operating companies. Arun had argued that the suspension deprived many young people of employment opportunities and inconvenienced commuters, noting that there are about 8 lakh gig workers in the state. Reddy recounted that in 2018, discussions were held on the pros and cons of bike taxi services, and in 2019 a committee led by the Metro MD recommended against them. However, in 2021, battery-powered vehicles were allowed. The current suspension, he said, is due to operators flouting regulations. 'The matter is in court, and a verdict is expected in a few days. The government will act in accordance with the court's decision,' he assured.

India's next gen coal-fired power projects in limbo; Approvals pending over a year after Budget announcement
The 800 MW NTPC-BHEL advanced ultra super critical (AUSC) coal fired project is yet to get requisite approvals from the centre despite being announced in Budget 2024-25. According to submissions by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) before the Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertakings (CoPU), follow-up meetings were held at NITI Aayog in August and December 2024 subsequent to the budget announcement. 'A draft Public Investment Board (PIB) note for approval was also submitted to the Power Ministry by NTPC with project details in March 2025,' MHI said. But there has been no progress since. 'The final approval from the Government is still awaited which is crucial for the project to move forward,' the Parliamentary Committee said. The AUSC project aims to replace aging subcritical coal plants with more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives. The technology, developed jointly by BHEL , NTPC, and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), completed its R&D phase in December 2020. According to MHI, the proposed Technology Demonstration Plant (TDP) is to be located at NTPC Korba in Chhattisgarh and implemented by NTPC BHEL Power Projects Private Limited (NBPPL). Expressing concerns over the delay, The CoPU expressed concern over the delay, calling the ministry's response 'interim' and urging the Ministry of Heavy Industries to 'vigorously follow up' with the Ministry of Power and other relevant departments to secure final approval. The committee emphasized the importance of the AUSC project in improving the efficiency and environmental performance of India's thermal power fleet, especially as over 130 GW of coal-based capacity is expected to cross 30 years of age by 2047. The report also highlighted broader issues facing BHEL, including procurement restrictions, delays in board appointments, and gender representation in the workforce. The committee reiterated its call for time-bound action and greater inter-ministerial coordination to ensure strategic projects like AUSC do not languish despite policy support.
