Cops bust online investment scam syndicate in Seremban

The illegal syndicate promoted non-existent online investment schemes through messaging platforms, according to the police.
SEREMBAN : Police have crippled an online investment scam syndicate known as the 'Ah Kit Group' following a raid in Taman Bukit Kepayang here last Sunday.
Negeri Sembilan police chief Ahmad Dzaffir Yussof said a team from the state commercial crime investigation department arrested nine locals based on intelligence gathered on the illegal syndicate that was operating out of several premises.
He said the suspects arrested were aged between 21 and 35, and that police also seized 33 mobile phones, nine laptops, seven vehicles, and 14 notebooks.
'Investigations revealed the syndicate had been operating since January, using a house as a call centre to promote non-existent online investment schemes through messaging platforms such as Tantan, Tinder, Telegram, and Facebook.
'The group primarily targeted victims from neighbouring countries,' he said in a statement today.
According to Dzaffir, the syndicate paid a monthly salary of RM3,000 to call centre operators and used gated residential areas as hostels and operational bases.
He said the group lured victims by claiming to represent legitimate companies and promising high returns on investments.
'Once the victims transferred their money, the syndicate gave various excuses to delay or avoid payouts, eventually cutting off all contact,' he added.
Although the victims were not Malaysians, Dzaffir reminded the public to remain vigilant and not be easily deceived by online investment offers that promise quick and lucrative returns.
All suspects have been remanded for four days starting April 28. The case is being investigated under Sections 420 and 120(b) of the Penal Code.

AGC urges restraint after Yusoff Rawther acquittal, warns against trial by media and public perception

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has urged the public to avoid speculation or defamatory comments following the High Court's acquittal of former research assistant Muhammed Yusoff Rawther on drug trafficking and weapons-related charges. According to a report published today in Free Malaysia Today, the AGC in a statement said it respected the court's decision and the judge's reasoning, while acknowledging the case's high public interest. 'The administration of justice must not be compromised by trial by media, public insinuations, social status, or perception,' it said. Yusoff, who was held in remand for nine months, was acquitted yesterday of drug trafficking and possessing two imitation pistols, claiming the items had been planted to frame him. The AGC said its decision to prosecute was based on a thorough review of the evidence and was carried out independently and in line with legal principles. It added that it is currently reviewing the judgment in detail and will consider all options before deciding on any further action. The AGC reaffirmed its commitment to uphold the rule of law and to act with integrity, fairness, and respect for the judicial process.

Online food seller pleads not guilty to posting offensive YouTube content on GISBH probe

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — An online health food seller pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of posting offensive content regarding the authorities' investigation into GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH) via his YouTube channel last year. Norizan Yahaya, 62, was charged with making and transmitting content deemed offensive, with intent to annoy others, via the YouTube account 'Zam Yahaya Official' between 2.00pm and 6.00pm on September 15, 2024. The said content was accessed at the Cyber and Multimedia Crime Investigation Division, Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Bukit Aman Police Headquarters, Menara KPJ, Wangsa Maju at 8.00pm on September 16 of the same year. He was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to one year, or both upon conviction. An additional fine of RM1,000 may be imposed for each day the offence persists after conviction. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Amir Hannif Ahijman proposed bail at RM10,000 with one surety. However, the accused's lawyer, Asiah Abd Jalil, sought minimal bail on the grounds that her client is the sole breadwinner supporting an unemployed wife and does not pose a flight risk. 'My client sells health food online and earns approximately RM2,000 a month. He has five children, two of whom are at university,' she submitted. Judge Norma Ismail granted bail at RM7,000 with one surety and fixed the next case mention for July 11. — Bernama
