Delhi HC refuses to entertain Amanatullah Khan's PIL against proposed Batla House demolitions
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday declined to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Amanatullah Khan, challenging the proposed demolitions in the national Capital's Batla House.
A Division Bench of Justices Girish Kathpalia and Tejas Karia observed that only aggrieved residents can make a claim that their properties exist beyond the proposed demolition site.
Sensing the disinclination of the Delhi High Court to extend any relief, the senior counsel, appearing on the AAP leader's behalf, sought permission to withdraw the PIL.
In its order allowing withdrawal of the petition, the Justice Kathpalia-led Bench took note of the submission that the legislator from Delhi's Okhla constituency would inform the residents of their right to file appropriate legal proceedings within three working days.
The petition alleged that generic notices were issued by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to the residents in Batla House area, depriving citizens of their fundamental rights.
It may be recalled that the Delhi High Court has stayed the UP Irrigation Department's demolition plans for now, offering temporary reprieve to some residents.
According to the DDA, the action stems from a Supreme Court directive ordering the clearance of encroachments on public land.
However, many residents claimed that due process was not followed, and they were neither given the chance to prove ownership nor offered alternative rehabilitation before receiving eviction notices.
The matter reached the apex court, but a Bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma ordered to list residents' plea before the regular Bench for hearing in July.
On May 22 and 26, two separate notices were served, one by the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department and another by the DDA, referencing Khasra numbers 277 and 279 in the affected locality.
The timing and abruptness of the move sparked panic, with locals scrambling to seek legal relief.

Then came demolition drives targeting people living in jhuggis, another 'prasad' for the downtrodden. And now, with the onset of peak summer in May and June, they've delivered yet another gift--by hiking the PPAC for the entire city.' Showing a video of a BJP event from July 2024, he stated that at that time, the BJP was furious that the PPAC had been increased by 8%. The AAP Delhi President said that electricity bills have increased under the BJP, and Delhi is now facing long and unbearable power cuts. 'In this scorching heat, people are spending entire nights without electricity. This has never happened before. 'You can't ask questions': AAP's Saurabh Bhardwaj slams govt on plane crash
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bhardwaj on Friday launched a sharp attack on the ruling government over the growing concerns over public safety in India. He questioned, through a series of tragedies that have happened in recent months, asking for the government's accountability for rising accidents and crime incidents. In a post on X, Bhardwaj said, "You go for a vacation in Kashmir, and terrorists shoot you point blank. You go to a Kumbh and it ends in a stampede, killing many. The Aam Aadmi Party leader's remark came after the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick crashed shortly after taking off from the Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours. According to Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It made a Mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, the aircraft did not respond to the calls. Immediately after departing Runway 23, the aircraft crashed outside the airport perimeter, and heavy black smoke began emanating from the accident site. There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national on board the crashed plane, airline authorities said.

Ludhiana: Inaugurated in March, toilets still under renovation in civil hospital
Nearly two months after chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated the renovated works at the civil hospital here, few toilets are still far from being functional. The male toilet in the emergency and trauma ward, the toilets outside the labour room and the ones towards the rear of the mother and child section are still being renovated. There is a single user toilet near the emergency ward's entrance, but it is mostly used by patients and is also occupied. The male attendants of the patients in the emergency or trauma wards either use the toilets in the OPD, but as it closes after OPD hours, or go to the first-floor male ward to the other side of the building. The renovation had been touted as a very big step towards bringing the hospital on par with corporate hospitals. According to a senior hospital official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, there was no deadline for the completion of renovation work of these toilets. The renovation work was led by Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora, who is also AAP's candidate for the upcoming Ludhiana West bypolls, under the MPLAD scheme. The CM had inaugurated the renovations on March 18 in an elaborate event. Civil hospital's senior medical officer Dr Harpreet Singh said, 'The toilets in the wards are all working now. Just a few are remaining and the work would be completed soon.'
