Aston Villa punished by Premier League as statement issued over fifth breach of rules

Daily Mirror9 hours ago
Aston Villa have received a punishment for the new Premier League season after breaching the division's rules in the clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park last term
Aston Villa have been fined £125,000 after breaching Premier League rules over the multiball system for the fifth time, with the club now banned from using it for the first three games of the new season.

In total Villa have been fined £330,000 since the beginning of the 2024/25 season for consistently misusing the system, which is designed to keep matches flowing as balls are quickly thrown onto the pitch following stoppages in play.

In the club's final home match of the season against Tottenham Hotspur, as they pushed for Champions League qualification for the second season in succession. Goals from Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara earned victory over Spurs but the club have been judged to have used the multiball set-up incorrectly.

In addition to the fine, the Villans are now prohibited from operating the multiball system at its first three home matches of this season against Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Fulham. That follows the club being punished for indiscretions against Manchester United, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Brentford last season in addition to Spurs.
Against the Lilywhites, Villa went against guidance in a number of ways. Ball Assistants provided replacement balls from the cones directly to Villa's players for throw-ins and corners when not permitted to do so.
Additional ball assistants were positioned behind the goal that Aston Villa were attacking, and were in possession of additional balls to provide the Midlands side's players with ahead of corner kicks. In contrast, at the end the opposition were attacking, no additional assistants were in place and the correct number of balls were located in the area.
And on one occasion a ball assistant threw an additional ball onto the pitch at the same time as Tottenham's goalkeeper was collecting the match ball in order to restart the game via a goal kick. This happened despite the club twice seeing concerns over the multiball system raised around the game.
Ahead of the match, the match delegate and referee brought up the need to adhere to guidance and implement the correct application. Match officials then raised concerns over this to Villa's multiball supervisor at half-time.
The Premier League said in a statement: "The Premier League has entered into a sanction agreement with Aston Villa FC after the club accepted it had breached the Premier League 's multiball rules. First introduced in the 2022/23 season, the multiball system is intended to maintain the flow of League matches, reduce delays and enhance the fan experience.

"Clubs are required to adopt a multiball system at every League match and adherence to the relevant rules and guidance is of vital importance to maintain consistency and, crucially, to ensure that home clubs do not gain a competitive advantage through their misuse of the system. "The accepted breach was the club's fifth of the multiball rules during the 2024/25 season. The club will pay a £125,000 fine and will be prohibited from operating the multiball system in its first three home League matches of the 2025/26 season."

Jamie Carragher makes Alexander Isak to Liverpool prediction and admits concern

Jamie Carragher expects Liverpool to be successful in their pursuit of Alexander Isak, but is worried what that means for Hugo Ekitike. The Reds have had one bid of £110m turned down by Newcastle for the Swedish striker this summer, but their interest has not been quelled. Isak is also very keen on the move to Anfield and has not been involved in Newcastle's pre-season fixtures or even training with the rest of the squad as a result. Liverpool will need to return with a bigger offer, closer to Newcastle's asking price of £150m, although the Magpies are keen not to sell the Sweden international at all. Carragher expects the Premier League champions to eventually get their way one way or another, adding Isak to their ranks before the transfer window closes. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Asked if he thinks Isak will be at Anfield by the end of the summer, Carragher told Sky Sports: 'I think he will be, I think Liverpool need to sign two attacking players, I think they will go back with another bid, whether Newcastle accept that… 'But it doesn't feel like at this moment other names are getting bandied about, so I think Isak will be in a red shirt.' Liverpool have already signed a striker this summer, with Hugo Ekitike arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m. The Frenchman scored in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace and scored on his Premier League debut against Bournemouth on Friday night. Speaking of the new arrival earlier this week, Arne Slot felt he can be versatile up front alone, with a partner or on the left wing. The manager also made it clear he wants another signing up front after the sales of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz and the tragic loss of Diogo Jota. 'I see Hugo mainly as a number nine who could also play from the left or play together with another number nine,' Slot told Sky Sports. 'It's clear that with Darwin gone and Luis Diaz gone, and even last season we have five or six options, I think, Diogo, I need to mention him as well. So we need to have one more attacker, at least.' Carragher does hold some concern over what an Isak arrival would mean for Ekitike, not sure that Slot's claim of playing both up front would work. More Trending 'Arne Slot said he can play on the left, he can play in a front two. It's hard to play the two of them up front. Wirtz is the No 10, he's the £115m man – he needs to play every game. So would Isak, so Ekitike would be filling in,' said the Reds legend. 'I don't think Ekitike would ever fulfil his full potential at the club if someone like Isak is there. 'If Isak comes in, Ekitike would be an understudy. And £80m is not a lot of money for an understudy.' Semenyo was taking a throw-in when the comment was allegedly made from the crowd. The winger immediately reported it to Taylor, who then took the due process to get it reported immediately. Sky Sports commentator Peter Drury lifted the lid on the incident as those watching at home were initially left out of the loop. He said: "I am told by the Match Centre, the Premier League Match Centre, that Antoine Semenyo was subject to a racist comment from the crowd. "Of which, of course, nobody on either side, or indeed anywhere, is approving. So, sympathy from Liverpool, beyond which, at this stage, nothing to report. "What I can tell you, also, is that it was Semenyo himself who brought the referee's attention to it." The game was halted for several minutes as players took on water while Semenyo's accusation made its way to the higher ups. Taylor soon blew his whistle to restart the clash. And Liverpool ended up drawing first blood as they went ahead through new striker Hugo Ekitike. THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY.. This time Hugo Ekitike turns provider, laying the ball into the path of Cody Gakpo on the left of the penalty area. Lovely stuff! 4 minutes ago By Sam Dymond Cody at the Kop! 27 minutes ago Ken Lawrence on Antonine Semenyo abuse There always has to be an idiot. On a night so full of emotion around the tragic death of Liverpool striker Diogo Jota, amidst a belter of a game with Bournemouth really impressive on the counter before Hugo Ekitike's fine Prem debut goal, the last thing the occasion needed was a racist comment. But that is what Antoine Semenyo reported to referee Anthony Taylor that he heard from the crowd. The guilty party or parties should be ashamed of themselves. Disgraceful. 28 minutes ago By Sam Dymond Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth 42. Milos Kerkez goes into Anthony Taylor's book. A first Premier League goal for Hugo Ekitike! The striker has been all action this evening and deserves this breakthrough strike, and it's one that - unsurprisingly - he makes himself.
