National Sports Awards: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik reign again, Nor Farah's historic win for lawn bowls
The title, the second time won by the 2022 world champions, saw them fend off challenges from professional men's singles player Lee Zii Jia, national weightlifter Mohamad Aniq Kasdan, wushu athlete Wong Weng Soon and pencak silat exponent Abdul Latif Maxzakir.
Last year, the world number five pair defended their Olympic bronze medal for the second consecutive time by defeating Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark, 16-21, 22-20, 21-19, at the Paris Olympics.
National lawn bowl champion Nor Farah Ain Abdullah was named the National Sportswoman, beating Sin Li Jane (tenpin bowling), Tan Cheong Min (wushu), Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri (cycling) and Nor Farah Mazlan (pencak silat).
The world number one lawn bowler made history by becoming the first female lawn bowling athlete of the country to win the National Sportswoman title.
Nor Farah stole the limelight by winning a gold medal in the women's individual event at the 2024 World Indoor Bowls Championships in Guernsey, Channel Islands, in April last year.
His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia presented the National Sportsman and Sportswoman awards respectively to Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik represented by Badminton Association of Malaysia secretary-general, Datuk Kenny Goh and Nor Farah.
Aaron-Wooi Yik were not present at the 2024 ASN as they are participating in the 2025 Thailand Open which began today until Sunday.
The achievement of defending the gold medal in the men's 72 kilogramme category at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris qualified national powerlifting champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin to win the National Paralympic Athlete for the third time after 2021 and 2023, defeating three para-athletics contenders, namely Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli, Datuk Abdul Latif Romly,and Eddy Bernard (para-athletes) as well as Cheah Liek Hou (para-badminton).
The 2024 para lawn bowls World Championship champion, Hasmunirah Maliki, won the National Paralympic Athlete title after defeating four other candidates, namely two para-cycling representatives Nur Azlia Syafinaz Mohd Zais and Nur Suraiya Muhamad Zamri, Noor Askuzaimey Mat Salim (boccia) and Noor Imanina Idris (para-athletics). — Bernama

Jun Hao gets rare chance to spar with Antonsen as part of world reparations
Raring to go: Based on the World Championships draw released on Wednesday, Anders Antonsen could be Leong Jun Hao's opponent in the last eight if both go that far. PETALING JAYA: It's not often that a player gets to spar with a potential opponent before facing him on one of badminton's biggest stages. But men's singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao will have that rare opportunity when he trains with world No. 2 Anders Antonsen of Denmark ahead of the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. Jun Hao will head to Copenhagen for a training camp from Aug 18-22 where Antonsen is expected to be present, before the Malaysian makes his debut in the world meet. Based on the draw released on Wednesday, world No. 25 Jun Hao could go up against Antonsen if both reach the last eight. Singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen believes the sparring sessions are a crucial part of Jun Hao's preparations for the world meet. 'Jun Hao's preparations so far have been good but as always the final 10 days before the tournament are very important,' said Jonassen. 'The training camp is crucial as we can fine tune many details there. We will have high quality real match play and the intensity will be even higher. 'I believe Anders will be there (in Copenhagen) during the training session,' he said. Despite starting as the underdog, Jonassen believes Jun Hao has a good chance to go far in Paris. The 26-year-old has been given a favourable start in the competition as he will avoid the world's top 10 players in the first two rounds. Jun Hao should have no problems beating Switzerland's Tobias Kuenzi in his opening match before a meeting with either Japan's world No. 14 Kenta Nishimoto or Taiwan's world No. 28 Wang Tzu-wei in the second round. The going gets tougher for the 2017 Asian Junior champion if he makes it into the third round as he could face another Taiwanese, world No. 6 Chou Tien-chen. 'I think we can be happy with this draw. There are chances if Jun Hao can play at his very highest level and stay consistent,' said Jonassen. Meanwhile, another Malaysian men's singles representative Lee Zii Jia will be making his much awaited comeback in the prestigious meet after a long injury layoff. Zii Jia has been struggling with an ankle injury this year and last competed in the All-England in March. The independent player will open his campaign in Paris against South Korea's world No. 38 Jeon Hyeok-jin. If he gets past Hyeok-jin, Zii Jia could take on China's world No. 4 Li Shifeng in the second round.

Announced a few months ago, APAC Wrestling Ground Zero will host a major event — SlamFest 25 — on August 30 at Stadium Juara. This upcoming event won't be your typical local wrestling show, as for the first time ever, WWE's Independent Development (WWE ID) stars will be making their way to Malaysia to go toe-to-toe with local talent. If you're curious to know, WWE ID is a programme that helps independent wrestlers work towards joining WWE, where it focuses on developing talent by providing mentorship, training, and access to WWE's world-class resources. Professional wrestling fans will know WWE as the largest Pro wrestling company in the world, based in the United States, and while WWE has previously held shows in Malaysia — once in 2002 and again in 2014 — it's the first time WWE, through their WWE ID programme, is officially collaborating with a Malaysian wrestling promotion. 4 men get good behaviour bond, 1 fined RM600 over football brawl
A viral video of the brawl showed players trading blows at Padang Speedy in Teluk Intan, Perak, on Aug 7. PETALING JAYA : The Teluk Intan magistrates' court released four men on a good behaviour bond while another man was slapped with a RM600 fine over their involvement in a brawl during a football match last week. Magistrate Naidatul Athirah Azman ordered a six-month good behaviour bond for Harith Nazreen Shah Abd Ghani, 21, Danial Asmawi, 23, R Tharmaraj, 28, and E Paranitharan, 29, after they pleaded guilty to committing affray. The four men, who were playing in the match, were charged along with another person still at large with committing the offence at Padang Speedy in Teluk Intan between 5.15pm and 6pm on Aug 7, Harian Metro reported. The charges were framed under Section 160 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to six months in prison, a maximum RM1,000 fine, or both if convicted. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Darwis Aghniya Halim Azizi had asked the court to impose a commensurate sentence to serve as a deterrent to the public, stating that the incident had gone viral online. M Saravanan of the National Legal Aid Foundation, who served as lawyer for Harith and Danial, said the guilty pleas had saved the court's time and all four had since made up and become friends. 'They shook hands and have apologised to each other. They humbly request the court to be given a second chance,' he said, adding that this was the first offence for all four men. The court then ordered all four to sign a RM500 good behaviour bond for six months. Tharmaraj and Paranitharan were represented by lawyers Charan Singh and S Morgan respectively. The court then imposed a fine of RM600 on another man, Kuzairin Kamaruddin, 31, after he pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to a referee at the same match. He will have to serve two months in prison if he fails to pay the fine. Kuzairin was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of a year's imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.
