Kota Kinabalu: Police view seriously the burning of a poster containing the image of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, reportedly by students on the second day of their protest at Lintasan Deasoka on Sunday. Sabah Police Commissioner SAC Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the matter would be investigated under the Sedition Act and Penal Code. They would also look into all conditions that were set for the group to organise the rally after City Police was notified. 'Once completed, we will refer it to the Federal Attorney-General's office soon as possible for the next course of action,' he told Daily Express, Sunday. Jauteh was commenting on some participants believed to be Universiti Malaysia Sabah students calling themselves Suara Mahasiswa UMS who set fire to an image of Anwar and a placard at Lintasan Deasoka, Gaya Street, Sunday morning. Suara Mahasiswa UMS President Fadhil Kasim also attacked the Prime Minister in a social media post after the incident.
Advertisement The group was earlier given the green light by police to hold the protest rally over government accountability, stronger anti-corruption reforms and long-standing infrastructures issues affecting the campus, especially water supply. However, in their statement to the press where they expressed surprise over the 'unprecedented' approval by the Kota Kinabalu OCPD, among their grouses was one related to the institution of the Sabah TYT. It was unclear whether this intention was made known to the police when approval was given. Jauteh said no arrest had been made at press time. 'I was made to understand that many tourists witnessed the poster burning incident and this caused fear in a public place,' he said. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor, when asked whether they may be expulsed if confirmed to be UMS students, said he would discuss it with the university's legal advisor, as well as advice from the Ministry of Higher Education before any action is taken. Federal Deputy Minister of Higher Education Datuk Mustapha Sakmud told Daily Express he is in the midst of gathering facts on the incident and would issue a statement soon. JB trader loses more than RM1mil after falling for fake job offer on social media
JOHOR BARU: A local trader has lost more than RM1mil after falling victim to a fake part-time job offer advertised on social media, says Comm Datuk M. Kumar. The Johor police chief added that the victim, who is in his 40s, lodged a report on Sunday (June 22), claiming that he had been duped by an online scam offering high-paying commissions for reselling goods. 'The victim came across a part-time job advertisement on social media on March 26 this year, where he was promised 25% commission for purchasing and reselling certain goods,' he said here on Tuesday (June 24). Comm Kumar added that after registering for the job, the victim was instructed to make several transactions to different bank accounts as part of the buying process. 'He made a total of 22 transfers amounting to more than RM1.15mil between March 28 and June 13 into various bank accounts purportedly linked to the business. 'However, the victim did not receive any commission or returns as promised, and eventually realised he had been cheated,' Comm Kumar added. He said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of one to 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction. Comm Kumar urged the public to be wary of social media job offers that promise lucrative returns, especially those that require upfront payments. 'We advise the public to remain cautious and not fall easily for online job scams that seem too good to be true,' he said. He also urged Malaysians to make use of available verification tools before making any payments online. 'This includes contacting the CCID Infoline, using the 'Semak Mule' portal, or downloading the Whoscall app to screen unknown numbers and accounts,' he said. Comm Kumar also advised the public to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 if they suspect they have fallen victim to a scam. 'Prompt reporting can help freeze the suspect's account and potentially recover funds before they are transferred out,' he added. Comm Kumar also said that for latest information on scam tactics and prevention tips, the public can follow the official social media pages of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) under the handle @Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Komersil - JSJK PDRM on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

Ukrainian drone triggers fire in apartment building west of Moscow, official says
A Ukrainian drone struck a multi-storey apartment building outside Moscow early on Tuesday, triggering a fire and injuring two people, TASS news agency quoted a local official as saying. Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, said the drone started a fire on the 17th floor of the building in the town of Krasnogorsk, west of the capital. The injured people were receiving treatment at a hospital. Vorobyov said two other drones were shot down west of Moscow. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said earlier that Russian air defences had intercepted two Ukrainian drones heading for the city overnight. Sobyanin, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said specialists were examining the debris of at least one drone downed after midnight. The mayor said a third drone targeting the capital had been repelled earlier in the evening. Russia's defence ministry reported that air defence units had destroyed nine drones in a 90-minute period before midnight, including nine over the border regions of Kursk and Bryansk. Ukraine has launched drone attacks on a wide range of targets in recent months, some a long distance from the Ukrainian border. In one attack this month, dubbed 'Operation Spider's Web,' Ukrainian drones targeted long-range military aircraft at a number of Russian bases. Johor Bahru road rage suspect arrested after reckless driving incident
JOHOR BAHRU: Authorities have detained a man linked to a road rage incident involving reckless driving and vehicle damage at Susur 6, Jalan Tun Razak. The altercation, which escalated into a collision, resulted in RM15,300 in damages. Johor Bahru Selatan police chief ACP Raub Selamat confirmed the arrest, stating the clash began when the 50-year-old suspect, driving a Toyota Hilux, aggressively overtook a 63-year-old motorist in a Perodua Axia. The victim had reportedly slowed down after missing a turn, triggering the confrontation. 'An exchange of words is believed to have taken place between both parties before the suspect rammed the victim's car three times,' Raub said. Investigations revealed the suspect has seven prior criminal records. The case falls under Section 427 (mischief) and Section 279 (reckless driving) of the Penal Code, alongside Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
