Lewis Ferguson to Napoli transfer hinges on one thing amid prospect of Scotland midfield takeover in Naples

Daily Record13 hours ago

The Serie A champions have been heavily linked with the Bologna skipper
Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson is once again the subject of transfer interest after another fine season which ended in the club lifting silverware for the first time since 1974.
But the Scotland ace's chances of landing a big money move to Serie A champions Napoli to link up with Dark Blues pals Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour will reportedly hinge on one key decision made by Antonio Conte's side.

Former Aberdeen and Hamilton midfielder Ferguson has been heavily tipped with a switch to the south of Italy this summer, having also previously been linked with the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.

Ferguson's hopes of going to Euro 2024 12 months ago were ended with a serious knee injury picked up near the end of the 2023/24 season but the 25-year-old has since bounced back in impressive style under Vicenzo Italiano.
The Tartan Army hero skippered Bologna to glory in the Coppa Italia with 1-0 win against AC Milan in Rome, securing a place in the revamped league stage of the Europa League next season.
However, Napoli's interest in the ex-Rangers kid will only be stepped up in the event that they lose one of their current stars.
That's according to Italian outlet Il Mattino (via calcionapoli1926) who claim that a bid for Ferguson is highly dependant on the future of midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.
Cameron international Anguissa has been a mainstay in Gli Azzuri's engine room in recent years and scored six league goals last season en route to the club's fourth Scudetto.
But the former Fulham star is also a wanted man, amid reports that Besiktas in Turkey and Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League have both enquired about his services.

Il Mattino goes on to say that Napoli value Anguissa at around €20million and that he would need to be sold for Napoli to make an approach for Ferguson, who is said to be valued by Bologna at £25million.
Ferguson is under contract at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara until 2028, with his club side having the option of an additional year.

Last month, the player's agent Bill McMurdo admitted that Ferguson's future is entirely in the Coppa Italia winners' court.
He told TMW: "Lewis has a long-term contract and would be happy to stay until the end of it.
"We believe Bologna would be happy for him to see out his contract. However, if the club were to receive an offer they consider satisfactory, Lewis would have to consider any potential interest, but only at that point.'
Despite reports that Conte would walk out on the Naples club over a lack of transfer funds just weeks after steering the team to Serie A glory, the veteran coach has instead committed his services for another season.
Napoli have also been liked with a move for Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi.

Celebrities embark on 555-mile cycle for MND research and deliver Lions match ball

Scottish rugby legend Kenny Logan and his television presenter wife Gabby are among those preparing to take part in Doddie'5 Lions Challenge, cycling around 100 miles a day for six days, departing from Belfast on Sunday. The team will cycle through counties including Galway, Limerick and Cork, to arrive in Dublin on June 20 and deliver the match ball to the Aviva Stadium for the British and Irish Lions' 1888 Cup clash with Argentina. Doddie Weir, pictured in 2018, died of MND aged 52 in late 2022 (Jane Barlow/PA) Some participants have had to pull out due to injury, including Weir's son Hamish, who will instead drive a support vehicle, while Scotland rugby stars Bryan Redpath and Hugo Southwell, and ex-Lions and Ireland international Rob Henderson, will also no longer be able to take part. Football legend Ally McCoist, actor Jamie Bamber, former Harlequins player Mel Deane, and cancer campaigner Iain Ward will all take part alongside the Logans. The challenge has raised more than £300,000 for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association so far, with hopes of reaching £500,000 before Sunday. Kenny Logan will lead the team, and he has been doing intensive hill sessions on an exercise bike twice a week ahead of his second endurance fundraiser for MND research. He joined the Edinburgh to Paris cycle in 2023 which raised almost £1 million. He said: 'We've lost a few to injury, and it just shows how demanding this is going to be. I've had my own aches and pains. No major injuries thankfully but I've definitely been reminded why I probably shouldn't be moving this much at my age. 'I'm most nervous about the hills. I convinced myself Ireland was flat – it's definitely not. But nerves are good. I've always had them before a big challenge. 'The support's been incredible. We've still got time to push, and every penny counts. 'Since Doddie died, awareness has grown massively – but we still need to fund research. The foundation has committed nearly £20 million already, which is phenomenal, but it's only the beginning. 'Doddie would be proud – but he'd be telling us to go further and faster. That's why we're doing this.' He joked that McCoist needed some help with bike maintenance. Logan said: 'Ally's been out and about, but his bike broke down the other day. I told him not to trust himself to check the batteries on his fancy gears – someone else needs to do that for him.' Weir set up the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation in 2017, the year after he was diagnosed with MND. All funds raised form the cycle will support the foundation to find effective treatments and ultimately a cure for MND. To donate or learn more, visit

Rangers cult hero bags biggest job of his life at 47 – just days after predecessor in role announced his OWN sacking

But only a few dare take on the task of managing the national team, given its storied history and reputation in the game with four World Cups and two European Championships. That challenge now falls on former Gers star Gennaro Gattuso, who has been appointed as the new manager of Italy. Gattuso, 47, takes over from Luciano Spalletti who just a few days ago announced his OWN sacking. Spalletti's time was up after a 3-0 defeat to Norway but he still took charge of the national side's next game against Moldova. Those results leave the Azzurri sitting third of the five teams in their World Cup qualifying group. Gattuso, who recently left Hajduk Split after narrowly missing out on the Croatian title, is understood to have accepted the role as first reported by Fabrizio Romano. He was given a heartfelt send off from Split after winning 20 of 43 games, drawing 14 and losing nine. Hajduk finished just two points behind eventual champions Rijeka. Gattuso started his managerial career at Swiss club Sion but was sacked after 12 games. He later coached Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa before landing the manager's role at AC Milan, where he had spent most of his playing career. Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers Milan were somewhat in the doldrums during that time and the four years he spent as manager there yielded no trophies and he left in May 2019. He was appointed boss at Napoli later that year and won the Coppa Italia in his first season there. After being let go by Napoli in 2021, Gattuso returned to management with Valencia the following year but quit after six months and then had a similarly short spell with Marseille in which he was sacked after five months. Gattuso signed for Rangers in 1997, as part of an influx of Italians including Lorenzo Amoruso, Marco Negri and Sergio Porrini (Swede Jonas Thern also joined that season from Roma). He was just 19 when signed by then-boss Walter Smith but he fell out of favour under Dick Advocaat at Ibrox and was moved from his usual midfield position to right-back before being sold to Salernitana for £4m. Gattuso won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 and was capped 73 times for his country, scoring one goal. 4 Rino Gattuso during his time at Rangers Credit: Scottish News and Sport 4 Gattuso signed for Rangers in 1997 Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Louis is romancing TV presenter Zara, who split with Sam late last year. The dinner took place with the lads and some teammates at Champneys spa in Tring, Herts, where they have been training for the match at Old Trafford. A source said: 'There is no beef between the pair and they're both going to ensure their love lives don't distract from such a big charity spectacle. They are fully aware that their every move is being scrutinised and they've broken bread with their teammates, so it'll be smooth sailing on the day.' Zara has already ruled herself out of attending. Sam also presented a video of his charity work in Guatemala to both sets of players. He said: 'I did a small talk in front of everyone, which was terrifying, and I maintain I think it's the most important thing I've done in my 32 years of life. 'I really do believe that. Getting to go to Guatemala to see what UNICEF do on the ground is just life-changing.' Unfortunately, Sam has been ruled out of playing in the game. He suffered injuries during his 260-mile running and cycling trek between London and Manchester, in aid of UNICEF, ahead of the match. Sam Thompson breaks silence on injury that forced him out of Soccer Aid and says he had to be 'carried' to physio room Sam explained: 'I'm now part of the coaching team, so I'm going to be on the sidelines along with Vicky McLure and also Tyson Fury, and I'm going to be putting my two pence in. "But I will still get to be part of it all.' HARRY: TYSON IS BOSS HARRY REDKNAPP will let England assistant boss Tyson Fury do whatever the boxer wants as he makes his coaching debut at Soccer Aid. He added: 'He's very similar to my old number two Joe Jordan. He was very quiet and would just look at an opposing manager and go 'shut it' and they would not say another word.' GORKA GLOVES PADDY DANCER Gorka Marquez has turned into a Strictly scout looking for potential Soccer Aid talent to be in the next series. He reckons newly single TV and radio host Paddy McGuinness in training as goalie, would be a top signing. 13 Gorka Marquez has turned into a Strictly scout looking for potential Soccer Aid talent to be in the next series Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Gorka revealed: 'Paddy has talent and he's funny. He would be great.' Gorka insisted he had no plans to retire from the hit BBC One programme. He said: 'Why would I want to leave the biggest show on TV? I want to be like Anton Du Beke, still competing at the age he was.' BEY BROOD'S STAGE 'NO' BEYONCE is giving her kids great music experience by featuring them in her Cowboy Carter tour. But the youngsters, who have also been on Bey's records, are not certain to follow in their mum's footsteps, according to grandma Tina Knowles. She said: 'Beyonce's kids go on tour with her every single time since they were newborns. And it's wonderful for them.' Tina added: 'I don't know if they're going to go into that business or not. I hope that they don't.' Speaking of Bey and Jay-Z's eldest daughter Blue Ivy, who at 13 is a talented dancer, Tina told Sirius FM: 'Blue is super-talented, but Blue also rides horses well, plays the piano. She is multi-talented. So we don't know what she is going to do. And she's a spitfire.' Just like mum . . . Rita fourer RITA ORA has always been a fashionista with evolving style – but four outfits in one day is quite a stretch even for her. Rita still managed to look fantastic in all of them. DANNY'S PERFECT END TO ED ROW ED SHEERAN and Danny Dyer had a bizarre falling out over fish and chips – but have buried the hatchet thanks to football. It started earlier this year when the Perfect singer bashed London chippies, saying: 'You should always be able to see the sea when you have fish and chips, so anywhere that does traditional fish and chips in London. It's like getting sushi in Alabama.' To which proud Cockney geezer Danny fired back: 'That would only be a man who is not from London who would say that. 'I think he's from Ipswich, which I think sums him up.' Ouch. But Ed whisked actor Danny off to see his beloved West Ham play Ipswich Town last month. In a pre-recorded podcast chat with Louis Theroux, which has just dropped, Ed said: 'I was asked about fish and chips and I said you have to see the seaside to eat them, and I wouldn't necessarily want to eat them in London. He took a big offence to that. 'It was a jokey offence, he had a pop at me and I got in contact with him and just said, 'Come to Ipswich'.' He added: 'I love Danny Dyer, we used to have Danny Dyer nights on tour. We watched every single Danny Dyer film.' West Ham won 3 -1, so Danny had the last laugh. We are going for dinner next week to celebrate the album coming out. 'I asked her to be in the video and I really wanted to make a piece of art with a true great British actress and artist.' Yungblud is single after splitting from US musician and actor Jesse Jo Stark, who he reveals is the 'love of my life'. He also opened up about his close friendship with Anais, who is the daughter of Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher. Yungblud insists he is mates with her fella, actor Callum Scott Howells. He said: 'Of course I'm mates with Callum. Everyone is naughty. Anais is one of my best mates. 'Everyone is speculating, but I love Callum. He's a geezer. 'Anais makes me laugh. She is hilarious. I think she is a legend.' Yungblud will hold his very own one-day music festival, Bludfest, at Milton Keynes Bowl on Saturday. He said: 'It feels like all my plans are coming together. This is the fun part. It's now time for me to enjoy it.' KADY NOSE BEST THE already gorgeous Love Islander Kady McDermott has had a non-surgical nose job.
