Cam Skattebo still has NFL fans riled up over the fact that he couldn't recognize some of the best players the game has seen. On a recent appearance on the 'St. Brown Bros' podcast, Skattebo received plenty of online criticism over the fact that he couldn't recognize former Detroit Lions wide receiver, Calvin Johnson.
The clip got to former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, and it's not exactly sitting well with the former NFL MVP.
"They not fans of the game," Newton said on '4th&1 With Cam Newton.'
"These kids— they playing video games all day. Have you ever heard of Chad Ochocinco? Have you heard of Terrell Owens? Have you heard of Steve Smith? Have you heard of Prime Time?"
Newton understands the state of the game. When he was coming up, YouTube highlights weren't relevant the way they are now. Skattebo enters the NFL in a different time, where technology dominates. He might be an NFL player, but knowing the history of the game isn't exactly a requirement to get into the league.
Newton calls for young players in Skattebo's position to study the game more, spending 30 minutes to an hour understanding the history better.
The advice for Skattebo comes from a valuable football mind. Newton, a former first-overall pick, lived up to the hype for most of his career.

Cam Skattebo #44 of the New York Giants speaks with the media after rookie minicamp at NY Giants Quest Diagnostics Training Center on May 09, 2025 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.Once Newton went under center for the Panthers in 2011, he was one of the most exciting players in the game. During his first season, he earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors as he dominated on the ground and in the air. By year three, the Panthers found a lot of success with Newton, as he totaled 30 touchdowns on the year, rushing for over 500 yards, and throwing for nearly 3,400 yards.
The ex-QB left the game in 2022. His resume included three Pro Bowl selections, one First-Team All-Pro nod, an Offensive Player of the Year award, and an NFL MVP award in 2015.
Skattebo enters the NFL as a 2025 fourth-round pick. He was taken 105th overall out of Arizona State. This past season, Skattebo appeared in 13 games. He rushed for 1,711 yards, averaging nearly six yards per carry. He also caught 45 passes for over 600 yards. Skattebo finished off his final college season with 34 total touchdowns.
Whether he takes up Newton's advice to study the history of the game or not, the Giants are optimistic that Skattebo could be a solid young addition to their offense for 2025 and beyond.

NHL Rumors: Insider reveals likely cost to sign Florida Panthers' Brad Marchand in free agency

The Florida Panthers acquired Brad Marchand just ahead of the NHL trade deadline hoping he would give them enough of a push to win the Stanley Cup Final in back-to-back years. With Marchand making his case for the Conn Smythe Trophy, he's poised to cash in soon in NHL free agency. Chris Johnston of The Athletic believes the bidding war for the Panthers might get 'north of $8 million' annually. Not only is an $8-plus million AAV on the table, but Johnston also writes that Marchand will likely receive four-year contract offers. Advertisement Related: Latest on Florida Panthers' plans with Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand Brad Marchand playoff stats: 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists), 2 power-play points, 3 game-winning goals in 22 games Just over a month removed from his 37th birthday, Marchand made his debut in 2010 with the Boston Bruins. The 5-foot-9 center has played in nearly 1,300 career games, including the NHL Playoffs. Even before his postseason heroics this year, he was viewed as one of the 10 best players expected to reach free agency. The projected asking price could push him out of the Panthers' price range. Florida is prioritizing a lucrative eight-year contract extension with Sam Bennett and there is a desire to re-sign defenseman Aaron Ekblad. As a result, the Panthers are in serious risk of losing Marchand to the open market. Related: Insider sheds light on Sam Bennett's future with Florida Panthers Brad Marchand career stats (ESPN): 980 points (556 goals, 424 assists), 84 power-play goals, 82 game-winning goals in 1,100 regular-season games Advertisement The question then becomes what Marchand prioritizes in NHL free agency. Already a Stanley Cup champion, he would provide an excellent veteran presence for a young team and he remains a reliable points producer. However, the length of the contract and Marchand's age make signing with a rebuilding club less likely. Instead, clubs like the Toronto Maple Leafs ($25.71 million in cap space), Carolina Hurricanes ($28.42 million in cap space) and Los Angeles Kings ($21.71 million in cap space) could emerge as potential suitors. Hall of Fame Receiver Demands Commanders Pay Terry McLaurin

Hall of Fame Receiver Demands Commanders Pay Terry McLaurin originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin may not be a Hall-of-Fame player on the level of Calvin Johnson, but that doesn't mean he isn't elite in his own right. Advertisement The All-Pro receiver is coming off a career year in which he recorded 13 touchdowns while helping to lead Washington to its first conference title appearance in 30 years. Now, McLaurin wants a new deal. The former Ohio State product is entering the final year of his contract with the team and is looking to be paid among the elite receivers in the sport. Johnson, a former Detroit Lions all-time great, fully supports this. In a recent appearance on Up & Adams, Johnson praised McLaurin and believes the receiver is worthy of a long-term extension. "I don't know Terry very well, but from afar, man, the guy has been nothing but consistent for that organization," Johnson said. "He's been a staple there in Washington his whole career. And you know, he plays his role, plays it well. He steps up in big games. And I love watching the kid because he's always making plays." Advertisement Johnson and McLaurin share many things in common. Both struggled to find stability in their starting quarterbacks until an SEC signal-caller was brought into the organization. Both were great before, during, and after those SEC quarterbacks were brought in. Johnson is considered one of the greatest modern receivers in NFL history. McLaurin isn't at that stage yet but is regarded as one of the more consistent players in the league today. McLaurin will eventually get the deal he's been coveting for years now. And it'll only make a Hall-of-Famer like Johnson happy at this point. Buccaneers' Mike Evans Among NFL's Best at One Specific Route

Buccaneers' Mike Evans Among NFL's Best at One Specific Route originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mike Evans is fresh off his 11th consecutive 1,000-yard season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, tying Hall of Famer Jerry Rice's record, and is the only player to ever do it in the first 11 seasons of his career. Advertisement The former Texas A&M Aggies pass catcher strikes fear in the eyes of defenders each and every week thanks to his excellent route-running skills and pass-catching ability. But according to Lauren Gray of Pro Football Focus, Evans was best in the league last season at running the slant route. "Mike Evans generated a 15.8% target rate on slants last season, the second-highest clip in his route tree. Nearly every catch turned into a big play. He secured 16 of 18 passes for 187 yards (fourth most), with all but two catches going for first downs. Seven of his first downs came on late-down targets, where he secured each one for 92 yards. Evans hauled in two touchdown passes, recorded five gains of 15-plus yards and ranked fifth in yards gained after contact (45). "The 11th-year veteran has seen 54 slant targets over the past three seasons (fifth most), earning a 94.3 PFF receiving grade on those plays (tied for third best). He has caught 45 slants for 487 yards and 36 first downs across that span, all top-three figures." Advertisement Last season, offensive coordinator Liam Coen had a lot to do with spreading out the offense, and Evans benefited. Next year, Josh Grizzard will be calling plays and designing the offense, but isn't expected to deviate too much from what Coen started last year before he took the head coaching job in Jacksonville.
