Everything Hubert Davis, RJ Davis said after UNC loss to Duke in ACC Tournament

USA Today15-03-2025

Everything Hubert Davis, RJ Davis said after UNC loss to Duke in ACC Tournament Hear what UNC head coach Hubert Davis and star guard RJ Davis said after Friday's ACC Tournament Semifinals loss to Dule.
The first UNC-Duke basketball matchup this year was a blowout. Saturday, March 8 in Chapel Hill wasn't much better.
It appeared the ACC Tournament Semifinal matchup on Friday, March 14 was heading towards a blowout, but North Carolina came roaring back in the second half. The Tar Heels dug themselves too deep a hole, though, losing 74-71 in a game that could very well decide their NCAA Tournament fate.
UNC (22-13, 13-7) had every excuse to win Friday's game, facing a Blue Devils (30-3, 19-1) squad without superstar Cooper Flagg and top defender Maliq Brown. Instead, North Carolina trailed by 21 points at halftime and endured perimeter shooting woes that plagued it all season long.
Also as the Tar Heels did all season long, they showed plenty of fight and overcame a massive second-half deficit. UNC actually had a chance to take the lead with under five seconds to go, as starting center Ven-Allen Lubin went to the line for a pair of free throws.
Lubin missed the front end, then Jae'Lyn Withers got called for a lane violation I haven't seen in ages. I watch so many games where that same play isn't called – and it's tough Friday's game had to end on one.
You can go ahead and blame North Carolina's loss on Withers' timely mistake, but Withers is one of the main reasons the Tar Heels were playing Friday in the first place. UNC lost because of digging itself in a 20-plus point hole during the first half.
North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis had quite a few things to say in his postgame press conference, while star guard RJ Davis joined him for a couple questions.
Hubert on his feelings about the 2024-2025 Tar Heels
"I can't be more proud of a team than I am right now. Just love these guys to death. I love their fight, I love their togetherness, I love how close they are. I told them after the game, I didn't think I could be more proud of a group than I am right now. But I am more proud. I thank Jesus every day that I get to be their head coach.'
Hubert on Ven-Allen Lubin's continued impact and tonight's double-double
"He helped us a lot. Not just in scoring, his defense his rebounding, keeping the ball alive, running the floor. He's been consistently at a high level for a while and giving us that inside presence, alongside our ability to score from the outside has helped us out offensively. Again, Ven's activity, Duke even without Maliq and Cooper, they still have tremendous length. And so for Ven to be able to do what he did against a long and athletic team, was exactly what we needed to be able to get back into the game.'
Hubert on whether UNC deserves an NCAA Tournament spot
'We're going to go back home. The most thing I've been proud of this group, is and they're good questions in regards to the NCAA Tournament. Those are questions that have been asked over a month. And for our guys to stay focused on what is real and that was, being the best team we could become, continue to prepare, practice and play, whomever we're playing, keep our eyes focused straight ahead on the competition right in front of us and be thebest that we can be. For a month and a half, we basically played must-win games. In that situation, our team played the best. That's pretty cool from a bunch of kids.'
RJ on whether UNC deserves an NCAA Tournament spot
'I think we've shown these past couple of weeks that we are a tournament team. We're a special team. If you look at the trajectory of our whole season, the way we dealt with diversity and perseverance, especially these last couple of weeks, we overcame all of that. You couldn't ask for a better team than that, which goes through that type of adversity, goes through that type of criticism and still perseveres through it all and comes out on top. I think that's a tournament team right there for you. Cause that's what March is all about.'
RJ on the UNC-Duke rivalry
'I think anytime you put on this jersey and you're going against Duke, it's an opportunity to be part of history. I've been fortunate and grateful enough to play in a lot of games, that I'll cherish and remember for the rest of my life. I just think with this team and this year's group of guys, to be down 20 the first half and then fight our way back, all the way down to a minute and a half, I don't think a rivalry gets better than that. It was a gritty game and I'm just proud of the way we, not just against Duke but this whole tournament and all year, we consistently battle and compete at an all-time level.'

The Tax Benefit Of Winning The U.S. Open At Oakmont Country Club

Last year's U.S. Open Champion, Bryson Dechambeau, had many reasons to smile. In addition to lifting the trophy, he also took home $4.3 million. The U.S. Open continues to represent one of golf's biggest prizes. While any golfer would give whatever it takes to take home this year's trophy (first place prize again expected to be $4.3 million), there is an extra layer of incentive this year that makes it even more beneficial relative to future years: taxes. Like Dechambeau's win last year in North Carolina, this year's winner can also expect to face relatively low state income taxes levied on their prize in comparison to upcoming years. In this article, I discuss the tax implications of winning at Oakmont and why it differs so much for the next three U.S. Open golf tournaments. Like other professions, when athletes earn money, they are subject to income taxes under Section 61 of the Internal Revenue Code. At the federal level, this rate maxes out at 37% for income over $626,350 ($751,600), meaning that most major professional athletes pay 37 cents for every incremental dollar earned. This tax applies to the athlete's money from contracts, endorsements, and winnings, among other sources. Furthermore, by being in the top tax bracket, the athlete's long-term investments will be subject to a higher (albeit preferential) tax rate of 20%. However, an extra layer of taxation that is less considered by many is state income taxes. Often referred to as the jock tax, athletes must pay state and local income taxes in the jurisdictions where they earn the money. According to Kiplinger, the jock tax has had made news in the past, starting with Michael Jordan being subject to it during the 1991 NBA Finals, subsequently leading to Illinois issuing tax bills to the L.A. Lakers players for the games they played in Chicago. The article also estimates that high-earning basketball players like Nikola Jokic and Steph Curry pay over a million per year for the jock tax due to taxable income earned in other states. Importantly, the jock tax primarily relates to income earned while physically in that jurisdiction, meaning that athletes' endorsement income is not subject to other state and local income taxes. This notion leads many professional athletes to live in states that do not levy an income tax. Professional golfers have also taken notice. GolfDigest reports an unusually high concentration of PGA golfers who reside in Florida, Texas, and Nevada to take advantage of the no-state income tax. This means that if the golfer wins a tournament in another state, they will need to pay that state's income tax on those winnings, but the golfer would not be subject to any additional layers of taxation since their home state does not require the golfer to pay income taxes. Oakmont Country Club is nestled in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As discussed by Forbes, it is widely considered to be among golf's greatest challenges, and it has hosted the U.S. Open a record 10 times. It is also scheduled to host the U.S. Open again in 2033 and 2042. While the USGA almost certainly selected Oakmont to host this year's U.S. Open based on it being the golf standard for championship golf, Oakmont also has a significant financial advantage for golfers relative to the upcoming sites. Pennsylvania boasts one of the lowest state income tax rates levied on income in the entire country, with a 2025 rate of 3.07%. This means that absent any other deductions, the winner of the $4.3 million prize will only pay approximately $132,010 in state income taxes on the winnings. In contrast, the three upcoming U.S. Open sites are Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (New York), Pebble Beach Golf Links (California), and Winged Foot Golf Club (New York). New York's top state income tax rate is 10.9%, whereas California's is 13.3%. This means that the $4.3 million champions prize winner will pay $468,700 (New York) and $571,900 (California) in the upcoming years. As reported by each state also has different withholding tax rules that the golfer needs to adhere to, and this rate can differ by state and by country. Importantly, when considering the total prize pool of $21.5 million, the collective group of golfers will pay millions more in taxes when the tournament is played in New York and California, relative to recent U.S. Open tournaments in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. The tax liability would be even less if the U.S. Open would be held at a golf course in a no-state income tax rate state like Florida, Texas, Nevada, Tennessee, or Washington, begging the question of whether the USGA and PGA should attempt to locate more of the significant golf tournaments in those states to better the golfers' wallets. Despite these challenges, it is important to point out that winning the U.S. Open has countless benefits associated with it and is clearly worth the additional tax headache, regardless of where the tournament takes place that year. Also, H&R Block highlights the numerous tax deductions that are afforded to professional golfers to help lower those tax burdens. Professional golfers should become well versed in the taxes they might owe as well as the ways they can minimize those tax liabilities.

Minnesota women's coach Dawn Plitzuweit gets two-year contract extension with raise

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota women's basketball coach Dawn Plitzuweit has received a two-year contract extension that was approved Thursday by the university's board of regents. Plitzuweit is 47-29 over two seasons at Minnesota, including 13-23 in Big Ten play, with leading scorer Mara Braun missing much of them with foot injuries. The Gophers capped Plitzuweit's second year by winning the WBIT championship. They have not appeared in the NCAA Tournament since 2018. The new deal, which covers the next six seasons through 2031, gives Plitzuweit a raise of roughly 7% to bring her base salary to $900,000 for 2025-26, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune, with annual increases of $30,000. That's in the middle of the pack in the 18-team Big Ten, which sent 12 of them to the NCAA Tournament this year. Plitzuweit was hired away from West Virginia, where she spent one season, to replace Lindsay Whalen. Plitzuweit is the 13th head coach in the program's history.
