Selwood's life in pictures following tragic passing
The Selwood family has been hit by more tragedy with Adam Selwood passing just three months after his twin brother Troy, as we look back on the Eagles great's best moments.
Born on May 1 1984, alongside twin brother Troy, he would be the second Selwood to enter the AFL, with the Bendigo product being taken at pick 53 in the 2002 AFL Draft after Troy was taken at pick 19 by Brisbane. Selwood will play just a further three matches in 2004, with osteitis pubis ending his season early in a frustrating start to AFL life.
But Selwood would announce himself in 2005, playing 21 matches and receiving an AFL Rising Star nomination, putting in a commanding performance in their preliminary final win over Adelaide with 26 touches and a goal. However, he would be kept quiet, a week later gathering just seven touches as West Coast would lose a grand final heartbreaking by four points. Having solidified himself as a defensive midfielder, Selwood would play every single game of the 2006 premiership season, averaging 19 disposals a game. But three weeks later, the Eagles and Selwood got their revenge, winning by one point in one of the all-time great grand finals with Selwood contributing 26 touches. In one of the more infamous moments of his career, Selwood got in a fight with Fremantle's Des Headland, in a fiery derby clash, but neither would be sanctioned after Selwood was cleared of using insulting language. While the Eagles would fall short of defending their flag, losing the semi-final to Collingwood despite Selwood's 31-touch performance, there would still be joy at the MCG, celebrating with brother Joel after Geelong beat Port Adelaide. Having finished third in the club champion award, Selwood would do the same in 2008 after playing every single game and despite a tough season, winning just four games would be named vice-captain of Australia in the International Rules series. As West Coast struggled over the subsequent years, Selwood remained a consistent performer, averaging more than 20 disposals across the 2009 and 2010 seasons. There would be no fairytale ending in a loss to the Crows, but Selwood finished his career having played 187 games with 43 goals and a premiership medal to his name. After spending nearly two decades with the Eagles, Selwood stepped away from football to focus on a different professional path.
But there would be one more moment in the sun for the Selwood family with all four brothers present as they celebrated Geelong's premiership win in 2022 in what would be Joel's final game. Joel Selwood pictured with his brothers Adam Selwood, Troy Selwood and Scott Selwood. Credit: Supplied

West Coast Eagles rally around Neale Daniher in fight against MND with WA Freeze
West Coast have rallied around the Daniher family ahead of staging the WA Freeze on Sunday during their clash with Carlton at Optus Stadium. Big Freeze 11 was another roaring success during Melbourne and Collingwood's King Birthday clash at the MCG on Monday, and now the Eagles will have their turn to honour the AFL champion. Daniher was working at the club when he was diagnosed with Motor neurone disease in 2013, an incurable illness that causes weakness in the muscles, leading eventually to paralysis. West Coast co-captain Liam Duggan said Sunday would be a special day and that the players were keen to honour Daniher with a strong performance as they hunt their second triumph of the season. 'It's an exciting day; the beanies are one thing, it's obviously very visual, and it's a great cause to be around,' he told club media. 'To be a part of our Freeze game in WA, it's really special. Obviously, the game last week looked super cool from afar with the slide and the quality of game it was. 'To play in that way, that style and the way Danners (Daniher) would have played his footy and coached his footy and the way that he's fought against this beast - that's how we'll be going out to play this game on the weekend.' Channel 7 icon Rick Ardon will lead the Perth personalities to take the icy plunge on Sunday with radio host Kymba Cahill as well as comedian Peter Rowsthorn. Adelaide will also host an SA Freeze in their match with Brisbane at Adelaide Oval. Luke Daniher, Neale's son, said it was good to see the fight against MND still going strong in the place his father's battle began. 'It's amazing to think it is the 11th year, and it's always good to come back to, I guess, where it all began,' he said. '2013, that's when Dad was diagnosed and he was at West Coast. 'It's amazing to have the West Coast team rally around him and it all kicked off with a fundraiser at The Stables with all those at the West Coast Eagles. It's just grown and grown and grown.' Luke urged fans to continue to rally around the cause to help find a cure. 'It's very important to keep the best and brightest minds busy when it comes to the beast of a disease,' he said. 'It impacts everyone differently. Every day, two people are diagnosed with MND, and every day, two people lose their lives, so it's incredibly urgent we do something about it.' 'When it comes to fighting such a beast of a disease, it requires a big army, and it's amazing to have the West Coast Eagles, all the supporters, to get behind the cause and without you, we won't find a cure.'

AFL grand final start time locked in
Tradition has won out and there won't be an AFL night grand final in 2025, with a daytime start locked in. Amid ongoing annual debate about shifting the game to a night-time, or even a twilight spot, AFL CEO Andrew Dillon confirmed the decider would start at 2:30pm. A day after Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge suggested a night-time grand final could impact celebration time, Dillon said there was no move to shift away from a timeslot which remains the preferred among most fans. The AFL Commission ratified the recommendation of a 2:30pm start at the Commission meeting in Melbourne on Tuesday. But the Commission will continue to review the start time for future grand finals. 'The Toyota AFL Grand Final is our competition's best moment, there is nothing like the roar that goes around the MCG when the ball is bounced to start the biggest game of the season.' Dillon said. Picture Lachie Millard Credit: News Corp Australia 'We will continue to work closely with our broadcast partner the Seven Network to create the most amazing sporting event in the country, both in the build-up during the week and on the last Saturday in September.' Beveridge, who has been involved in multiple grand finals at various club, including coaching the Bulldogs to the 2016 flag, said there was a key reason to play in the day time. 'Having experienced some success on that day whether it be with our club, the Hawks, the Pies at this level, or even at St Bedes, the simple thing for me is the winning team gets all night to celebrate,' he said. 'Regardless of what the best broadcast time is, but if you play a night time and the game finishes late at night, it would be a shame for the winning team to be too cooked to celebrate it.'
