Shedeur Sanders hurt, Dillon Gabriel to start vs. Eagles if healthy
Cleveland plans to start another rookie quarterback when the Browns visit the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday afternoon.
If third-round pick Dillon Gabriel's hamstring holds up through joint practices with the Eagles this week, he'll take his turn as Cleveland's QB1 following a strong debut from fifth-round quarterback Shedeur Sanders last week.
"The plan was always to give both of those guys starts in the preseason, so we'll see how it shakes out," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said on Wednesday, adding Gabriel had to clear hurdles with a sore hamstring the next two days if he wants to take the field first this weekend.
Stefanski made the comments before the team practiced on Wednesday, and prior to what could be an obstacle to Sanders building on his first outing and claiming a significant role.
Sanders halted participation in throwing drills and appeared to be injured in Wednesday's joint practice with the Eagles, further complicating matters for Stefanski.
Kenny Pickett, acquired from the Eagles in an offseason trade, is not available for 11-on-11 work because of a hamstring injury.
There's only one quarterback on the roster who hasn't been sent to the training tent this summer.
Cleveland hasn't committed to playing Joe Flacco, the purported No. 1 QB on the depth chart, in preseason games to preserve the 40-year-old's health.
Gabriel was selected 94th overall in the 2025 draft after putting up big numbers at three college stops: UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon. Still on the board 50 picks later, the Browns chose Sanders to end a well-publicized draft weekend crash from projections of a top-50 draft rating.
Gabriel said he won't put too much in the opportunity if he starts against the reigning Super Bowl champions.
"I try to just stay in the moment. I'll look forward to that moment once it comes and be right where my feet are," Gabriel said. "The best competitors know how to stay present and be themselves by competing at a high level one play at a time."
Sanders received high marks from Stefanski after the Browns' coaching staff reviewed the film of his two-TD showing in last Friday's win over the Carolina Panthers.
"Certainly, for a quarterback, that next step is getting in the game settings and taking the practice field to the game. And I thought that's what we saw by and large from Shedeur (Sanders)," Stefanski said. "That's what we saw by and large from our offense was really taking those things that we're homing in on, on the practice field and then showing them in the games, and it goes back to the previous point where we want to vary our offense."

After a 7-10 record last year, Dallas now have a first-year head coach, a disgruntled star player and a tough division that will not make success Cowboys have to face defending Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles and the vastly improved Washington Commanders, who faced Philly in the NFC title game, twice 2024 the Cowboys were below average on offence and even worse on defence - ranking sixth-worst in yards-per-game allowed and conceding the second-most points in the the odds look stacked against them celebrating the 30th anniversary of their last Super Bowl with a serious challenge for another, but there is no shortage of drama or controversy - the "good stuff" as Jones calls long as America's Team are in the news, that seems to do just nicely.

US Open live: Jannik Sinner fitness update ahead of Raducanu-Alcaraz in controversial new mixed doubles event
The new, and controversial, US Open mixed doubles event begins this afternoon with big names from tennis' list of star players set to headline the tournament. Among them are Carlos Alcaraz, fresh from his win at the Cincinnati Open and British No. 1 Emma Raducanu who will partner each other over the two days of the competition. But, there are major doubts about Jannik Sinner after the world No. 1 pulled out of the Cincinnati final through illness partway through the opening set with Alcaraz leading 5-0. Sinner is fully focused on recovering in time for the US Open singles and is expected to withdraw from the mixed doubles later today. The mixed doubles in New York will be staged on the two biggest courts – Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong – over Tuesday 19 August and Wednesday 20 August with the $1m on offer for the champion prize. The top-seeded pair features British No 1 Jack Draper alongside Jessica Pegula who face Alcaraz and Raducanu in the round-of-16. Sinner expected to withdraw from US Open mixed doubles The main news this morning concerns men's world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. He faced Carlos Alcaraz in the Cincinnati Open final yesterday and had to withdraw with the opening set 5-0 in Alcaraz's favour due to illness. He knew he wasn't feeling good before the match but wanted to attempt to play before realising he could not compete in such a state. After shaking skid, Cardinals shoot for more offense vs. Marlins
August 19 - The St. Louis Cardinals weren't about to panic despite entering a three-game series against the host Miami Marlins riding a five-game losing streak. A late-game surge lifted St. Louis to an 8-3 win at Miami on Monday, and the Cardinals will try to secure a series victory when the teams meet again on Tuesday. "I liked offensively what we did today," Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said postgame. "That was the key. We need to create more of an identity and consistency around that. When you look at the type of at-bats we took, we sprayed the ball all over the field. (Nolan Gorman did hit a ninth-inning) homer, but we took what the game was giving us, especially on the (five) walks." The result pulled the Cardinals within five games of the idle New York Mets for the final National League wild-card position. The first four batters in the St. Louis starting lineup on Monday went a combined 8-for-17 with four RBIs. Cleanup hitter Willson Contreras, who returned from a four-game absence caused by a foot injury, finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. "He's a high-energy, emotional player," Marmol said of Contreras. "We feed off his bat. You want him in there as much as possible." The Cardinals will try to maintain the momentum when they send right-hander Michael McGreevy (4-2, 4.41 ERA) on the mound on Tuesday.
