Canada To Reset Express Entry Categories For 2026. What It Means For Indian Students
The addition comes amid an announcement by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to streamline permanent residence applications for foreign nationals in these fields, according to a report by CIC News.
What Are The Categories
The first grouping - Leadership category - centres around senior managers. IRCC defines them as "highly skilled workers who oversee the operations of a company or organisation and who lead a team of employees." Through this category, the government hopes to boost the country's competitiveness and advance economic growth and prosperity, by bringing new perspectives, aid in digital transformation, enhance productivity and also contribute to organisational goals.
IRCC also plans to prioritise the second group targeting research and innovation, as it believes the category can help "enhance productivity and performance" and "stimulate economic growth." However, the document does not specify which disciplines or specialisations will be prioritised.
The last category being National Security and Defence, focuses on highly skilled military recruits from allied countries, to support the Canadian Armed Forces.
How It Impacts International Students
The changes to Express Entry categories can influence eligibility for Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP) for international students. As the report states, since 2024, 119 fields of study remain eligible while 178 were removed. As the Express Entry categories have changed, it is likely that PGWP requirements could see an update. Announcements are expected early next year.
Other Priorities For 2026
IRCC plans to keep Francophone immigration as a priority category for selection in 2026 to increase French-speaking permanent residents to 10% by 2027. Other categories include healthcare, skilled trades, education, STEM fields, and agriculture and agri-food.
Category-based selection helps fill labour gaps by focusing on Express Entry candidates with specific in-demand skills or language abilities.
The Express Entry categories are evaluated and revised annually to keep it relevant to evolving labour market needs.

Since morning, the atmosphere at the temples in the city was full of enthusiasm with people visiting the places of worship where Lord Krishna hymns set the tone for the Janmashtami celebrations. Many observed fast on the occasion, while devotees decorated their puja rooms with flowers and offered sweets to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. One of the most noteworthy parts of the festival is the 'Janmashtami' tableaux, also referred to as the popular 'Jhankis,' cherished by people of all age groups, especially children. These artistic displays depicting Lord Krishna's life, especially those of his childhood were set up at temples across the city, showcasing various aspects of Krishna's life starting from his childhood, beautifully telling the story in a visual form. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also celebrated the auspicious festival with great devotion, offering prayers at temples across the national capital. Extending her heartfelt wishes to the people of Delhi, the CM prayed for peace, prosperity, good health and happiness for every citizen. Speaking on the occasion, Gupta said that the life and teachings of Lord Krishna remain a guiding light for humanity. She said that Lord Krishna's entire life inspires everyone to walk the path of righteousness, justice and duty. His message of courage, compassion and truth is timeless, and continues to show us the way forward even in difficult times, Gupta added. CM began the day's celebrations by visiting the ISKCON temple in East of Kailash, where she performed aarti, joined devotees in singing bhajans, and participated in the festivities. Later, Gupta visited Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan (Qutubgarh), as well as temples in Prashant Vihar, Shalimar Bagh and other areas of Delhi. At these gatherings, she offered makhan-mishri (butter and sugar), swung the idol of child Krishna in a ceremonial cradle, and joined the devotional congregation. Reflecting on the significance of the festival, Gupta stated that Lord Krishna is not only a revered deity, but also a symbol of duty and truth. She said that through the Bhagavad Gita, he taught humanity the path of selfless action, equanimity and righteousness. 'These are complex problems and cannot be resolved in one meeting. The agreement to meet again with calm markets," Bathini told ET. How will GST impact markets Agrawal of SBI Securities said the move to a two-slab GST structure (5% and 18%), plus a 40% slab for sin products, will support consumption. "Few categories like large TV, AC, cement, automobiles, etc are likely to get cheaper, as they are shifted from 28% category to 18%. Moreover, reduction in GST rates on insurance products also will ease burden on consumers. Cheaper cement prices can have a multiplier effect on various sectors like real estate, roads/highways/infra as cost of production is likely to reduce and the same can be passed on to the consumer," he told ET. He cautioned, however, that the reforms must be implemented quickly. If not, festive season sales could be delayed as consumers wait for lower prices, temporarily affecting demand. Gupta and Bathini also praised the move, saying GST relief during the festive season will spur consumption and aid the wider economy, with FMCG and autos likely to gain. Market outlook Indian equities broke a six-week losing streak last week, finishing with gains of over 1%. Experts believe Monday's session will reflect optimism from both global and domestic developments. Santosh Meena, Head of Research at Swastika Investmart, said the Nifty is forming a strong base. "The immediate resistance lies at the 20 and 50-day moving averages (DMAs) clustered around 24,700-24,800. A decisive break above this level could trigger a short-covering rally towards 24,950, 25,080, and 25,225. Immediate support is at the 100-DMA of 24,575, with the crucial support level remaining at 24,350," he said. Anand James, chief market strategist at Geojit Investments, however, expects further weakness. "Directional moving indicators are still in favour of more downsides with 24,000 and 23,560 as potential downside supports attracting prices lower," he said. He added, "That said, the last week saw several attempts to push higher, giving us reversal hopes. Apparently none of those moves managed to successfully close above the 24670-720 band, the near term congestion resistance, they did manage to bring parabolic sar under the price, lending a positive bias." The analyst further said that the market has shown even better signs of resilience having had the highest number of Nifty 500 constituents closing above 10 day SMA, since 24th July. "Incidentally, the Nifty had tumbled from the 25,200 region on that day. This would be the objective we would be aiming, should we clear above 24,720 on Monday." Dharmasthala: Action based on SIT report, says HM
Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Saturday said the government will take a decision on action against wrong doings or conspiracies in connection with the Dharmasthala case based on the SIT probe report. The Special Investigation Team, formed by the state government, is probing charges of multiple murders, rapes, and burials in different places in Dharmasthala, over the past two complainant-witness, a former sanitation worker, whose identity has not been revealed, has claimed that he worked in Dharmasthala between 1995 and 2014, and that he was forced to bury a number of bodies, including those of women and had alleged that some of the bodies showed signs of sexual assault. He has also given a statement before a magistrate in this regard. 'I can't say anything as of now. Anything can be said only based on the probe report. Whether it is an interim report or a final report. Until the report comes, I cannot comment on the matter,' Parameshwara said in response to a question about taking action against alleged conspiracies or wrong doings in connection with the Dharmasthala case. Speaking to reporters here, he said, 'Once the report comes, we will all sit together, discuss and make an appropriate decision.' As part of the probe, the SIT has been conducting exhumations at multiple locations identified by the complainant-witness in the forested areas along the banks of the Netravathi River in Dharmasthala, where some skeletal remains have been found at two sites so BJP has been critical of the government's handling of the investigation and its inaction against what they called a 'slender campaign' targeting Dharmasthala and the temple demanded an interim report from the government and action against the complainant and others allegedly behind him, claiming the allegations were part of a 'toolkit to denigrate Hindu gods and their places of worship.'Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has also alleged a 'conspiracy' to tarnish Dharmasthala's image, and has expressed confidence that it will come to light through the ongoing investigation.
