Aadujeevitham's National Award Snub: Blessy Calls Out Ashutosh Gowariker's ‘Double Standards'
Last Updated: Aadujeevitham director Blessy is questioning how a film once praised in glowing terms by Ashutosh Gowariker could later be dismissed when it entered the National Film Awards. Filmmaker Blessy, who helmed the much-anticipated survival drama Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, has voiced his disappointment after the film failed to win a single award at the 71st National Film Awards. The film, which was widely expected to bag honours in cinematography, soundtrack, performances and even as Best Malayalam Film, was completely overlooked, leaving fans and critics surprised. But what has puzzled the director even more is the apparent change in stance by jury chairperson Ashutosh Gowariker, who had earlier praised the film. Now, Blessy is questioning how a film once admired in such glowing terms could be dismissed later on what he calls 'technical grounds." Blessy On Asutosh Gowariker's 'Double Standards' Speaking to OnManorama, Blessy shared that during a Mumbai premiere held for the film's Oscar campaign, Ashutosh Gowariker had not only praised Aadujeevitham profusely, but also compared it to the 1962 cinematic classic Lawrence of Arabia. He recalled, 'When we held a premiere in Mumbai as part of our Oscar campaign, I had reached out to him. We spoke at length, and he praised the film highly." The director recounted that Asutosh had stated that he hadn't seen a 'film that portrays desert so beautifully." Blessy shared, 'That comment felt like an award in itself. He even invited me to lunch the next day to discuss the film further, though I couldn't attend as I had to travel that night." He added, 'If someone appreciated the film in such detail before, how can they dismiss it on technical grounds? This seems like double standards." National Film Award Jury's Take On Aadujeevitham Despite fan expectations in categories like performance, cinematography, soundtrack and Best Malayalam Film, the survival drama was passed over completely. National Awards jury member Pradeep Nair explained what Asutosh thought about Aadujeevitham. Speaking to the same publication, Nair said, 'Jury Chairperson Ashutosh Gowariker had seen the movie at a previous film festival in Goa and had serious concerns about the film's adaptation and execution. Gowariker and others also felt the adaptation lacked naturality and the performances didn't feel authentic." Jury member Pradeep Nair confirmed that Aadujeevitham was very much in contention, but eventually lost out during the final round of discussions. According to him, the film narrowly missed winning in categories like Best Male Playback Singer and Best Lyrics, not due to creative shortcomings, but because of a technical lapse. He pointed out that the producers failed to provide an English translation of lyricist Rafeeq Ahammed's work, which disqualified it from the running. Nair also admitted that KR Gokul's performance was 'widely appreciated" by the jury, but it couldn't secure an award owing to concerns about the overall consistency and quality. So Who Took The Award Home? While Aadujeevitham left empty-handed, Christo Tomy's Ullozhukku took home the Best Malayalam Film title. The jury cited the film's consistency across writing, direction and technical craft as key to its win. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Sivakarthikeyan Wants To Do Maaveeran Sequel, But There's One Thing Holding Him Back
Sivakarthikeyan says he's scared of sequels but wants to do Maaveeran 2 for its unique script. Sivakarthikeyan recently attended the NASSCOM People Summit 2025, where he spoke about his cinematic journey and the idea of returning to past successes. While chatting about potential sequels, the actor made an honest confession — he's usually hesitant about sequels, but there's one film he'd love to revisit. 'I am scared of sequels quite actually," Sivakarthikeyan said during the event. 'It should be a very good script that doesn't spoil the first part's success. I am always scared of it." But despite his reservations, there's one exception. 'But, I want to try a sequel to Maaveeran. The movie had a very unique script, and that is why I want to give it a try," he added, sparking excitement among fans of the action-thriller. Maaveeran, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Madonne Ashwin, follows the story of Sathya — a timid comic book artist who draws a brave fictional warrior for a local Tamil newspaper. Averse to conflict in real life, Sathya's world turns upside down after a life-altering fall from a terrace. He begins hearing a mysterious voice narrating his life like one of his comics, prompting him to confront the corruption and injustice around him. The film saw Sivakarthikeyan in the lead alongside a stellar cast including Aditi Shankar, Saritha, Mysskin, Monisha Blessy, Yogi Babu, and Sunil. It was both a critical and commercial success, praised for its blend of fantasy, social satire, and political commentary. Interestingly, the film recently released in theatres across Japan with Japanese subtitles, furthering its international reach. Sivakarthikeyan was last seen in the biographical action drama Amaran, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy. The film, co-starring Sai Pallavi, became a box office hit and was lauded for its gripping storytelling. Looking ahead, the actor is set to headline Madharasi, an action thriller directed by AR Murugadoss, which is scheduled to hit theatres on September 5, 2025. The film's first single 'Salambala," composed by Anirudh Ravichander and sung by Sai Abhyankkar, has already built significant buzz. Madharasi also stars Rukmini Vasanth, Vidyut Jammwal, and Biju Menon. In addition, Sivakarthikeyan is currently shooting for Parasakthi, helmed by Soorarai Pottru director Sudha Kongara. view comments First Published: August 04, 2025, 18:59 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Musical comedy The Horse to close Aadyam's 7th season in Delhi
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) Sangeet Akademi Award-winning director Sunil Shanbag's absurdist political comedy 'The Horse" is set to be staged in the national capital on September 6 and 7, marking the finale of Aadyam Theatre's seventh season. The musical comedy, scheduled to be performed at Kamani Auditorium, is an adaptation of Hungarian playwright Julius Hay's original work of the same name. 'I first read 'The Horse' in the mid-1980s when there was interest in East European theatre writing in the experimental theatre world in both Marathi and Hindi in Mumbai. The play struck me as a wonderful example of a biting satire lampooning authoritarian absurdity, blind sycophancy, and the complicity of the elites. 'I was in no position to do the play at that time, but it has stayed with me for almost 40 years, and I am grateful that the Aadyam Theatre is making the long-held wish come true!" said Shanbag, who makes his return to Aadyam Theatre after 'Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon" — the acclaimed adaptation of Shakespeare's 'All's Well That Ends Well" — was staged its inaugural season in 2015. Set in a Roman tavern during the rule of the notoriously extravagant Emperor Caligula, the play unfolds over the course of a raucous gambling night that sees the emperor betting one of his most prized possessions. What begins as an outrageous bet spirals into a series of bizarre events that threaten to upend the Roman order. Through its absurd premise and sharply crafted satire, the play 'takes aim at celebrity culture, unchecked ambition, and the erosion of public institutions — offering commentary that feels as timely as it is timeless". The play features an ensemble cast, led by Akash Khurana as Emperor Caligula and Neil Bhoopalam as the young boy, Selanus. From musicals 'Chandni Raatein" and 'Mumbai Star" to the coming-of-age 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" and an edge-of-the-seat thriller 'Saanp Seedhi", the seventh season of Aadyam Theatre has showcased a range of theatrical productions.
