Iran to hold funerals for senior figures killed in war

Iran will hold on Saturday state funerals for senior military commanders and top scientists killed during the country's 12-day war with Israel, official media there reported.
"The national funeral ceremony for... commanders and scientists martyred in the Zionist regime's aggression will be held on Saturday...in Tehran," state news agency IRNA reported on Wednesday, a day after a ceasefire took hold.
IRNA also reported that Hossein Salami, the Revolutionary Guards chief killed by Israel on the war's first day, will be laid to rest on Thursday in central Iran.
Israel on June 13 launched a major bombardment campaign targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites and killing top officials, including Salami, who was close to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Residential areas have also been hit in the fighting, with the health ministry in Tehran reporting at least 610 civilians killed and more than 4,700 wounded.
Iran's retaliatory attacks on Israel have killed 28 people, according to official figures.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the ceasefire that ended the 12 days of conflict was going "very well", while leaked US intelligence cast doubt on the damage caused by US strikes to Tehran's nuclear programme.
US media earlier cited people familiar with a preliminary US intelligence report as saying that weekend strikes did not fully eliminate Iran's centrifuges or stockpile of enriched uranium. (AFP)

He had earlier acknowledged that it was not easy for European countries and Canada to find the extra money, but said it was vital to do so. "There is absolute conviction with my colleagues at the table that, given this threat from the Russians, given the international security situation, there is no alternative," the former Dutch prime minister told reporters. File photo: Reuters Zohran Mamdani declared victory in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday night after Andrew Cuomo conceded the race in a stunning upset, as the young, progressive upstart who was virtually unknown when the contest began built a substantial lead over the more experienced but scandal-scarred former New York state governor. Though the race's ultimate outcome will still be decided by a ranked choice count, Mamdani took a commanding position just hours after the polls closed that put him in a distant first place. 'I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City," the 33-year-old democratic socialist whose energetic campaign centred on the cost of living jolted the contest told supporters. 'I will be the mayor for every New Yorker, whether you voted for me, for governor Cuomo, or felt too disillusioned by a long-broken political system to vote at all. 'I will work to be a mayor you will be proud to call your own.' Cuomo, who had been the front-runner throughout a race that was his comeback bid from a sexual harassment scandal, conceded the election, telling a crowd he had called Mamdani to congratulate him. 'Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won,' Cuomo told supporters. Cuomo trailed Mamdani by a significant margin in the first choice ballots and faced an exceedingly difficult pathway to catching up when ballots are redistributed in New York City's ranked choice voting process.
