HC to monitor probe into drug racket involving Hoshiarpur jail officials

Time of Indiaa day ago

Chandigarh: Taking cognisance of the sale of drugs within Hoshiarpur central jail in Punjab, the Punjab and Haryana high court observed that it was shocking to note that senior-most jail officials were acting as a drug mafia.
The HC made it clear that it would monitor the investigation in the present case and asked SP, Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Rupnagar range, to furnish a status report on the investigation. Expressing dismay over the non-arrest of jail officials involved in the drug racket inside the jail, the HC was also of the view that it was equally shocking to note that SIM cards and mobile phones were supplied to the hardened criminals by these jail officials, and they were acting as conspirators in the drug racket.
"It is equally shocking to note that the senior-most jail officials were acting as a drug mafia, and it is the fittest case for invoking the extraordinary jurisdiction of this court under Section 528 of BNS in the present case. It has been brought to the notice of this court that Baljit Singh, jail superintendent, and several other senior officials of the jail department are still at large, and the police have not been able to arrest them to further establish the links of this drug nexus in central jail, involving the high-risk prisoners," the HC observed in its detailed order released last week.

Punjab govt has already formed an SIT headed by the Superintendent of Police (ANTF) Rupnagar and is being monitored by ADGP (ANTF) Punjab.
Justice Naresh Singh Shekhawat passed these orders while dismissing the bail petition filed by two accused in this drug racket inside Hoshiarpur jail. Dismissing the plea of two accused in the case, Bagga Singh and Narvir Singh, the HC observed that the grant of concession of anticipatory bail to both petitioners would amount to denial of fair assistance to the investigating agency to probe the case seriously and effectively.
Justice Shekhawat, however, made it clear that the matter has been kept alive only for the limited purpose of monitoring the investigation in the present case.
While fixing the case for July 21 for further hearing, the HC observed, "It is expected that SIT shall investigate the matter fairly and impartially."

Four arrested after Noida bizman's murder unveils currency scam

Noida: Four men have been arrested in Noida for their alleged involvement in a currency exchange scam that culminated in the murder of a 40-year-old businessman earlier this week. The suspects, part of a well-oiled ring, used a network of rented flats, staged foreign exchange deals, and violent tactics to trap and rob currency dealers. The suspects were identified as Ajay Kumar Sharma (48) and his son Mukul Sharma (25), both from Ghaziabad's Indirapuram, along with Akash Upadhyay (24) from Mahoba and Aryan Yadav (25) from Delhi. Police said Mukul and Akash were injured in a gunfight while attempting to flee a checkpoint near Noida's Sector 54. Officers recovered firearms, a stolen motorcycle and cash—both Indian and foreign—worth Rs 10.3 lakh from them. The case came to light after Ompal Bhati, a currency exchange operator from Sector 18, was shot dead in a rented flat in Sector 12. Bhati had reportedly gone there to exchange Rs 10 lakh in cash after being lured into a fake currency deal. Police said the group's modus operandi involved scouting for currency dealers, posing as genuine clients seeking to convert foreign currency, and renting properties briefly with token deposits to stage deals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Once the target arrived with cash, the accused would rob them at gunpoint and flee. Investigators revealed that Ajay Sharma masterminded the operations while his son Mukul, Akash, and Aryan surveyed and met with victims. In Bhati's case, the group had claimed they wanted to exchange Canadian dollars worth Rs 7 lakh. Akash even withdrew Rs 3 lakh to lend credibility to the fake deal. After Bhati arrived at the Sector 12 flat, the suspects attempted to rob him, but he resisted and was fatally shot. The group contacted Ajay post the murder, who advised them to take shelter at Aryan's house in Delhi. Police say they had defrauded another exchange operator of 8,000 dirhams just before their arrest. All four have been charged with murder, fraud, and possession of illegal firearms. ED flags deep conspiracy in Bhoodan land case; top officials, bizmen under lens

1 2 Hyderabad: In a major revelation, Enforcement Directorate (ED) has informed the Telangana high court that large-scale fraudulent transactions have taken place in the sale of Bhoodan land in Nagaram village in Rangareddy district. The central agency, in its counter-affidavit, claimed land sales registered in survey numbers 181, 182, 194, and 195, including 50 acres of Bhoodan land, were executed without valid ownership by the sellers. The buyers reportedly include senior bureaucrats and businessmen. ED has identified Mohammed Abdul Shukur as the key conspirator behind the fraudulent land deals. Shukur allegedly sold the land using forged documents and fabricated ownership claims, falsely asserting that he had purchased the land back in 1992. However, ED investigations revealed that Shukur had no legal title over the land, and his claims were entirely fictitious. "The actual owner of the land was one Haji Nawab Khan, who held 779 acres in the village," said Gajraj Singh Thakur, assistant director, ED Hyderabad. "By 1957–58, Khan had already sold 564 acres—specifically in these disputed survey numbers—to tenants. The remaining land was gifted to his sons and others, leaving no scope for sale in 1992," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Tome isso 1x ao dia se tem mais de 40 anos Portal Saúde do Homem Clique aqui Undo Citing a 1977 order by the land reforms tribunal, ED underlined the said land had already changed hands legally by the late 1950s. Despite this, Shukur allegedly manipulated records to show purchases in 1992, it alleged. ED flagged particularly suspicious transactions where Shukur's minor relatives—aged just 2 and 9 — were shown as purchasers of land in survey No. 194 from the late Nawab Haji Ali Khan. "This clearly indicates foul play and warrants a detailed probe into the authenticity of the documents and revenue records," the agency said. Shukur has already been named in two FIRs — No. 110/2023 and No. 331/2024 — pertaining to grabbing land using forged documents. ED said although its current probe focuses on survey No. 194, the same pattern of fraud appears to extend to survey numbers 181, 182, and 195. The scam, it said, was enabled by forged documentation, manipulation of land records, and a systemic failure—or collusion—of revenue officials. "Our investigation has revealed a deep-rooted conspiracy involving the use of forged documents, deliberate tampering of revenue records, and a complete disregard for facts present in official land records," the ED officer said. The agency added that the role of govt officials—from tahsildar to mandal to CCLA level—is under scrutiny, and further revelations are expected as the investigation progresses. Container rams into bike, kills two on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway

MUMBAI: Two men on a bike died in a hit-and-run on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway near Bapane village when a container truck rammed into them as they were returning home from work on Friday night, said the police. The police identified the victims as Brijeshwar Yadav, 47, and Ganesh Pilware, whose age they have not ascertained yet. The two were residents of Goregaon and worked at a Ramdev Studio film set in Naigaon East. According to the police Brijeshwar suffered injuries on his head and hands, and Pilware's stomach was crushed by the container. They were declared dead after being rushed to the general hospital in Naigaon. The police have registered a case against the yet unidentified driver of the container based on a complaint by Brijeshwar's younger brother, Bhagwan Yadav, 42. The police are trying to track the driver of the container and have booked him under section 106 (causing death by negligence), 281 (rash or negligent driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and section 187 (punishment for offences relating to accident) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
