HC to monitor probe into drug racket involving Hoshiarpur jail officials

Time of India13-06-2025
Chandigarh: Taking cognisance of the sale of drugs within Hoshiarpur central jail in Punjab, the Punjab and Haryana high court observed that it was shocking to note that senior-most jail officials were acting as a drug mafia.
The HC made it clear that it would monitor the investigation in the present case and asked SP, Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Rupnagar range, to furnish a status report on the investigation. Expressing dismay over the non-arrest of jail officials involved in the drug racket inside the jail, the HC was also of the view that it was equally shocking to note that SIM cards and mobile phones were supplied to the hardened criminals by these jail officials, and they were acting as conspirators in the drug racket.
"It is equally shocking to note that the senior-most jail officials were acting as a drug mafia, and it is the fittest case for invoking the extraordinary jurisdiction of this court under Section 528 of BNS in the present case. It has been brought to the notice of this court that Baljit Singh, jail superintendent, and several other senior officials of the jail department are still at large, and the police have not been able to arrest them to further establish the links of this drug nexus in central jail, involving the high-risk prisoners," the HC observed in its detailed order released last week.

Punjab govt has already formed an SIT headed by the Superintendent of Police (ANTF) Rupnagar and is being monitored by ADGP (ANTF) Punjab.
Justice Naresh Singh Shekhawat passed these orders while dismissing the bail petition filed by two accused in this drug racket inside Hoshiarpur jail. Dismissing the plea of two accused in the case, Bagga Singh and Narvir Singh, the HC observed that the grant of concession of anticipatory bail to both petitioners would amount to denial of fair assistance to the investigating agency to probe the case seriously and effectively.
Justice Shekhawat, however, made it clear that the matter has been kept alive only for the limited purpose of monitoring the investigation in the present case.
While fixing the case for July 21 for further hearing, the HC observed, "It is expected that SIT shall investigate the matter fairly and impartially."

Channel's ex-HR head accessed police crime database, got password from cop

Noida: A former human resources head of a private news channel and a head constable were arrested for allegedly breaching UP Police's crime tracking network and selling confidential information. The accused, Lalit Pandit of Greater Noida and head constable Prashant Solanki of Baghpat, were detained on Friday and arrested on Saturday. Police say Solanki provided Pandit with login credentials for the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) — a centralised database of case files, criminal histories, confidential FIRs and other sensitive information — which Pandit then used to monitor police activities and leak data for money. You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida Police sources said Pandit sold information, including details of confidential FIRs and cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, to lawyers and others for cash. "The head constable also received a share of the proceeds. We have identified at least two transactions of Rs 10,000 each between them," SHO Sector 63 Avdesh Pratap Singh said. According to police, Pandit had previously worked for News India, a news channel in Noida's Sector 63. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ghzalah Abu Bdon: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo Solanki, a 2014-batch constable, has served in several police stations across Noida, including served in Dadri, Rabupura, Beta Two, and Kasna. Currently, he is posted at Khair police station in Aligarh. He is suspected of sharing his CCTNS credentials with Pandit while posted at Kasna police station earlier this year. The breach came to light after Pandit allegedly posted sensitive Pocso case data on social media—an offence that prompted his detention. Police said they were now examining the duration and extent of the breach, as well as identifying the possible buyers of the leaked information. Both men have been booked under relevant provisions of the BNS and the Official Secrets Act. On Saturday, a local court remanded them in judicial custody. CCTNS is a 'mission mode project' under the national e-Governance plan of govt of India aimed at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of policing. Savage attack: Pack of stray dogs maul 5-year-old in Trimurti Nagar

1 2 Nagpur: What was supposed to be a carefree evening turned into a brutal ordeal for 5-year-old Nitya Mongre, who was mauled by a pack of 8-10 stray dogs outside her home in Deshpande Layout, Trimurti Nagar, around 5 pm on Friday. The child, a daughter of daily wager-turned-security guard Shravan Mongre, suffered deep wounds on her neck and shoulders and is battling for recovery at Radhakrishna Hospital. "I was on my way to my hometown Mandla in MP for Rakhi when I got the call. By the time I returned, my daughter was attacked savagely," said a distraught Mongre, who moved to Nagpur just four months ago seeking work. At the time of the attack, the street was nearly deserted. A kirana shop owner spotted the assault and raised an alarm. A passing motorcyclist then rushed in, using his bike to drive away the dogs and rescue the bleeding child. Residents say this is not an isolated incident — attacks by stray dog have become disturbingly common in the city. "The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) collects taxes from us, but what about our safety? If our children can't even step outside without fear, who will take responsibility?" fumed local resident Mayur Kumbhare. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Bedtime Drink Flattened Her Belly in Days Vitalgethealth Click Here Undo Mongre blamed both the unchecked street dog population and the rampant public feeding of strays. "People feed them milk, bread, biscuits, and chapatis right on the roadside. The dogs gather in large packs and attack passersby. There should be penalties for such irresponsible feeding of strays," he said. The Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme — intended to sterilise and vaccinate stray dogs — is crawling at a snail's pace, leaving thousands of unsterilised animals roaming the streets. Complaints to civic authorities continue to pile up with little visible action. The incident has sparked fresh demands for urgent intervention — from aggressive sterilisation drives and stricter pet ownership rules to banning public feeding of strays in unsafe areas. "We don't want another family to go through this trauma," Mongre said. NMC veterinary officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle told TOI a team was dispatched to the area soon after the incident, and two stray dogs from the pack were captured on Saturday morning. "We have initiated preventive measures to curb the menace in the locality," he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Gurgaon: The family of a two-wheeler rider who died in a 2020 road accident has been awarded Rs 22 lakh in compensation by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal. The victim was returning home when a tractor trolley carrying onions collided with his bike. The tractor driver fled the scene, abandoning his vehicle. The criminal case is still under trial. The tractor driver claimed he had a valid licence and argued that the compensation sought by the petitioner was excessive.
