MCD holds elections for 25 committees after hiatus
This is the first such election after over two-and-a-half years.
Since the number of nominations matched the required number of members, mayor Raja Iqbal Singh declared all nominations valid. He further announced that nominations for the posts of chairman and deputy chairman in each committee can be filed until July 31. Elections for these positions are scheduled for Aug 6 and 7.
Additionally, leader of the house Pravesh Wahi authorised the mayor to nominate three expert members each to the education committee and the ad hoc committee on Scheduled Caste welfare and reservation implementation, respectively.

Among the 23 committees, three — the anti-flood measures committee, naming and renaming of streets committee, and grant-in-aid committee — will be chaired by the mayor. The standing committee chairman, Satya Sharma, will head the municipal accounts committee and the high-powered property taxes committee, while deputy mayor Jai Bhagwan Yadav will chair the Hindi committee.
The session saw sharp protests from AAP councillors, who accused MCD of bias against the SC/ST community.

They alleged that the number of members in the ad hoc committee on SC welfare and reservation implementation had been reduced from 35 to 21.
Responding to the allegations, Singh asserted that the issue was not new and had been raised in earlier House sessions too.
"AAP had every opportunity to engage in constructive discussion and put forth its views but chose not to," he said.
Former AAP member Mukesh Goel said: "If AAP is so concerned about Dalit councillors, it should have got their Dalit councillors nominated to the committees."

The BSP president's statement has drawn mixed reactions from party leaders and supporters. While some welcomed her decision, others expressed apprehension that the decision to go solo might pave the way for further decline of the party's support base and defeat in the 2027 assembly elections in UP. 'At a time when political parties across the country are joining NDA or INDIA to retain relevance in the state and national politics, Behenji's decision may prove detrimental for the party which aims for revival in the 2027 elections. To remain relevant, the party will have to choose for an alliance either with the NDA or with INDIA alliance,' said a BSP leader who wished not to be named. However, another BSP leader said that with around two years to go for the assembly elections in UP, the party chief wishes to keep her options open. 'She will take the final call on alliance after the panchayat polls scheduled next year. She is working on strengthening the party organisation from booth level to state level. The party is working on the Dalit-OBC consolidation strategy to strengthen its base,' he said. Professor Vivek Kumar, a political observer, said: 'Mayawati is working on a tested formula to regain the lost ground in UP. Past alliance experiments have largely backfired. The BSP ended up transferring its votes to the alliance partners, but got little in return.' 'When a party goes for an alliance, it has to agree on a seat-sharing deal. In this situation, when the candidates campaigning for the party in the hope of getting a ticket are left in the lurch, they feel cheated. It also leads to rebellion as some contest as independent candidates. The organisation work is also adversely affected,' he added. 'Mayawati knows that the post-poll alliance brings more bargaining power in comparison to the pre-poll alliance. If the BSP manages two win around 30-40 seats in the assembly elections, it will be in a better position to bargain with the party that is vying to form the government,' he insisted. According to Anant Rao Akela, a Dalit ideologue, the support base as well as vote share of the BSP have shrunk in successive elections after the BSP lost power in 2012. 'Mayawati's strategy to regain power has failed. The BJP, SP and Congress have made inroads into its Dalit vote base. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the SP and Congress received a large share of Dalit votes,' he pointed out. 'The rise of Azad Samaj Party (ASP) leader Chandrashekhar is yet another challenge for the BSP to regain its hold over the Dalits. Mayawati's decision to remove her nephew Akash Anand from the post of national coordinator and re-appoint him has damaged his prospects in politics. If Mayawati goes solo in the 2027 assembly elections, Jatav votes will be divided between the BSP and ASP,' Akela said. According to BSP state unit president Vishwanath Pal, the party is organising cadre camps in all the assembly segments to regain its support base. 'The focus is on the youth. Senior party leaders have been directed to attend the camps to make the youth aware of the struggle of party's founder Kanshi Ram and president Mayawati,' he said. The BSP support base and vote share has been declining in the successive elections. In the 2007 assembly elections, the BSP polled 30.43% votes to form the government on its own. In 2012, the BSP polled 25.95% votes to bag 80 seats. In 2017, the BSP secured 22.23% votes to win 19 seats while in 2022, its vote percentage dipped to 12.88% and the BSP won a solitary seat. The story has been no different in the Lok Sabha elections. In 2004, the BSP polled 24.67% votes to bag 19 seats while in 2009, its vote percentage was 27.42% and the seat tally was 20. In 2014, the BSP's vote percentage declined to 19.77% and it failed to open its account. In 2019, the BSP contested in alliance with the SP and bagged 10 seats with a vote share of 19.42%. In 2024, the party failed to open its account with a vote share of 9.35%.

Punjab land pooling policy: Dissent grows in AAP; talk to farmers, says CM Mann's cousin
1 2 Chandigarh/Patiala: The political storm surrounding Punjab's contentious Land Pooling Policy 2025 intensified on Tuesday, with more voices of dissent emerging from within AAP and even from individuals closely linked to chief minister Bhagwant Mann . Mann's cousin, Gian Singh Mann, on Tuesday suggested taking farmers' opinion on the policy even as AAP's kisan wing leader in Jalandhar, Jaswant Singh Lovely, resigned. "Just as the anti-sacrilege law has been sent to the standing committee for review and to seek public opinion, the same way the views of the landholders and farmers should be sought," Gian Singh posted on social media. He hails from the CM's native village Satauj in Sangrur district. Dissent is growing in the AAP ranks against the land-pooling policy that faces stiff opposition from farmers in spite of efforts to assure them that the scheme is beneficial for them. Riders fume as wait for 2.6km E-W stretch stretches beyond 3 months
1 2 Kolkata: The commuter frustration over the inordinate delay in commissioning the 2.6-km stretch of East-West Metro, connecting the two disjointed sections — Sector V-Sealdah and Esplanade-Howrah Maidan — is turning into anger. People are questioning the rationale of an already long-delayed project being intentionally kept on hold by Metro Railway officials despite its completion more than three months earlier. The frustration has become more pronounced in recent weeks as commuters endure punishing road conditions — pothole-ridden thoroughfares, waterlogged lanes, and prolonged traffic snarls — to travel along the stretch. Some of these commuters have taken to social media, questioning why there is no light at the end of the tunnel for the crucial Sealdah-Esplanade section, although the project was approved for revenue operations on April 28. On Tuesday, singer-composer Shruti Pathak, who is running a campaign for the metro line's launch, posted on her X handle: "Day 12 of asking for the Esplanade-Sealdah metro to open. 12 days. 12 sincere requests. The first stretch ferries 45,000-odd passengers every day while the second registers nearly 55,000 daily riders, providing an under-river connection between Kolkata and Howrah. The missing link — the 2.6-km Esplanade-Sealdah corridor passing through the subsidence-prone Bowbazar — is yet to open. Metro Railway estimates that daily passenger count could reach 7 lakh once the full East-West Metro line is operational. Around mid-April, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC), the project's implementer, was asked to wrap up work on the Esplanade-Sealdah stretch and be ready for an "imminent inauguration". Despite overcoming various setbacks and receiving the final authorisation for revenue services from the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) on April 28, there is yet no sign of integration of the two Green Line sections. Metro engineers admit opening the entire 16.6-km Sector V-Howrah Maidan corridor will transform the way Kolkatans travel. Chanchal Das, a Salt Lake resident, voiced a common concern: "So many years, so many deadlines missed, especially for the last section, for which several Bowbazar residents are still living in rented flats. When will we be able to zip to Howrah and also use the Esplanade interchange to access the North-South Metro?"
