Is Coolie similar to Thalapathi? Lokesh Kanagaraj spills beans on how Rajinikanth reacted after watching it

Coolie is among the most awaited movies of 2025. Just a month away from its release, Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj's maiden project is seen as one of Tamil cinema's biggest box office bets this year. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Lokesh Kanagaraj spilled the beans on his upcoming venture and revealed how Thalaivar reacted after watching the first cut.
The Vikram director revealed that the 1991-released Thalapathi is his favourite Rajinikanth film, and he has tried to achieve the same level of balance while writing Coolie. Lokesh said, 'Out of Rajini sir's filmography, I love Thalapathi the most, and I have tried to maintain that balance with this film. That is what I tried to achieve with this writing.'
Kanagaraj went on to mention that Thalaivar hugged him after watching the theatrical print and acknowledged his vision. 'After watching the film in the dubbing studio, he [Rajinikanth] hugged me and said, 'It looked like Thalapathi for me!' That made my day, and that was the night I slept very peacefully after many months,' added Lokesh.
The young Tamil filmmaker underlined that no one can match Mani Ratnam's writing, but he was relieved a little after getting such a compliment from Rajinikanth himself. 'That is what I was telling my friends, too. If at all, I am doing a film with Rajini sir, it has to be somewhere close to Thalapathi. I cannot write a film on par with Mani Sir's quality, as his film and writing is unmatched.. but I got a little satisfaction when we compare that film with this one. Listening to the same words from Rajini sir was an achievement,' concluded Lokesh Kanagaraj.
Lokesh Kanagaraj reveals he had narrated a fantasy film to Rajinikanth before Coolie
Furthermore, Lokesh Kanagaraj also revealed that he had earlier narrated a fantasy film to Rajinikanth, to which the Superstar had immediately said 'Yes'. Though the duo decided to go with Coolie, as the fantasy film would've taken a year and a half more to roll on the floors. The filmmaker highlighted that almost 1000 people have worked on Coolie every day and night. It's been 4 months since the shoot, and he often visits Jailer 2 sets to meet the Tamil icon as he misses him a lot.
Coolie is locked to clash with Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's War 2 at the box office on August 14th, 2025. The much-awaited movie also stars Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and others. Aamir Khan is doing a special guest appearance in the movie, while Pooja Hegde will be seen shaking legs on a special dance number.

Censor Board clears Fahadh Faasil, Vadivelu's travel thriller 'Mareesan' for release with U/A certificate

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has now cleared director Sudeesh Shankar's eagerly awaited travel thriller, 'Mareesan', featuring Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu in the lead, for release with a U/A certificate. The film has triggered huge expectations as this is the second film that both actors, who are highly rated for their acting skills, are working together. The first film that they worked on together was Mari Selvaraj's socio-political drama 'Maamanan', which was not only a superhit but was also critically acclaimed. One other reason why 'Mareesan' has raised expectations-- not just among fans and film buffs but also industry insiders -- is that this film will be the 98th film of Super Good Films, a production house that is known for having produced several quality films and for having introduced several iconic directors of the Tamil film industry. Samantha Ruth Prabhu's 'Yashoda' gets U/A certification from CBFC A trailer of the film that was released recently by the makers has only gone on to add to the excitement of fans. Vadivelu, who knows his memory is failing, decides he will go to a friend's place in Thiruvannamalai. Fahadh, seeing an opportunity to steal the money that Vadivelu has, offers to drop him there on his motorcycle. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Offer Valid for the First 100 Bookings Only Birla Estates Learn More Undo As the two begin to undertake the long journey, things change. War 2: Jr NTR Entry Scene Details Out, Actor To Feature In Dance Number With Hrithik Roshan

Last Updated: Producer Naga Vamsi confirms Jr NTR plays a full-length role in War 2 alongside Hrithik Roshan. The action film hits screens on August 14, 2025. Ever since Jr NTR was confirmed to star in War 2, excitement around his role in Yash Raj Films' expanding spy universe has been sky-high. But as buzz around the teaser grew, so did speculation — especially about how much screen time the RRR star would actually get. Now, producer Naga Vamsi has put those rumours to rest. Speaking with Gulte Pro, Vamsi denied reports that Jr NTR would appear for just a portion of the film. 'NTR being there for 30-40 minutes is not true," he said. 'Both of them will be there throughout the film. After the first 15 minutes, Tarak anna will enter, and both of them will dance to a song. It is a commercially packed film." Backing his words with action, Vamsi's Sitara Entertainments has reportedly picked up the Telugu distribution rights for War 2 at a massive Rs 80 crore. On his decision, he added, 'I bought it because all these commercial elements will be there. How everything will come together, even I will watch it with the audience in the morning show. Based on my faith in NTR's judgement, I bought the film." Meanwhile, War 2 has officially wrapped its shoot. The film, directed by Ayan Mukerji, stars Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR in key roles, with Kiara Advani also part of the main cast. Shot across five countries, the movie features six large-scale action set pieces and is set to release in theatres on August 14, 2025, in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. The movie is the sequel to the 2019 action thriller, War and marks the return of Hrithik as Agent Kabir. This time, he is fighting another Indian agent, Vikram (played by Jr NTR), who is the new addition to the franchise. With just a month left for its release, the makers are now all set to unveil the film's official trailer. According to the insiders close to the project, Ayan and YRF have finalised the trailer for this action-packed thriller and plan to release it by mid-next week. 'YRF is lauded for designing trailers that evoke enthusiasm among viewers, and the cut of War 2 is locked with the purpose of generating buzz and intrigue to new heights. The theatrical trailer showcases three leads—Hrithik Roshan, NTR, and Kiara Advani—at their finest, and the team is confident that with an approximately 3-minute cut, it will leave an impression," said a source to Pinkvilla. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 09:24 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
