Rihanna drops upcoming Smurfs soundtrack single 'Friend of Mine' ahead of summer movie release
Rihanna has unveiled a new single titled Friend of Mine, released on May 16, as part of the soundtrack for the upcoming Smurfs animated film, in which she also stars as the voice of Smurfette. This marks her first new release since 2022's Lift Me Up, which was featured in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and earned her an Academy Award nomination.
The upbeat track blends Afrobeats-inspired rhythms with warm synths and danceable percussion. A preview of the song debuted in the film's trailer earlier this week, showing Rihanna's animated blue character singing and dancing through Smurf Village. The movie, which hits theaters on July 18, features an ensemble cast including John Goodman, James Corden, Nick Offerman, and Sandra Oh. The story follows the Smurfs as they unite to rescue Papa Smurf from an evil wizard.
Friend of Mine joins Higher Love—a track by DJ Khaled, Cardi B, DESI TRILL, Natania, and Subhi—on the movie's soundtrack. South African singer Tyla is also expected to contribute music to the project. In addition to lending her voice to the film, Rihanna served as one of its producers.
The singer first announced her involvement with the film during CinemaCon 2023, where she appeared while pregnant with her second child. Speaking at the event, she said, 'I get to show up in my PJs in my third trimester … I hope this gives me cool points with my kids one day.'
Rihanna recently confirmed her third pregnancy, debuting her baby bump at the 2025 Met Gala. She and partner A$AP Rocky are already parents to sons RZA and Riot Rose. Fans can stream Friend of Mine now and watch the accompanying video featuring a whimsical cameo by the pop icon herself.

Despite a cooling economy, several women continue to accumulate impressive wealth through business ventures, music tours, and TV shows. With a net worth of $3.1 billion, Oprah Winfrey tops the list of the wealthiest women in the entertainment industry. Despite her talk show going off air over 15 years ago, Oprah continues to build her fortune through Netflix projects, real estate, and her investments. In second place with a net worth of $1.7 billion, Kim Kardashian has firmly established herself as a business mogul with her shapewear brand Skims and skincare line SKKN by Kim. The success of Skims and recent collaborations, including with Nike, continue to contribute to her growing wealth. Pop star Taylor Swift has seen a $300 million increase in her wealth, now standing at $1.6 billion, earning her the third spot on the list. Her Eras Tour grossed a record-breaking $2 billion, and she has found new ways to monetise her success, including movies, books, and album re-recordings. Rihanna's father Ronald Fenty dies at 70 after brief illness
Ronald Fenty, father of pop superstar Rihanna, has reportedly passed away at the age of 70. According to Starcom Network News, a Barbados-based radio station, Fenty died early Saturday morning in Los Angeles after a brief illness. An official cause of death has not yet been disclosed. Family members have gathered in California to commemorate his life, with photos showing Rihanna's brother, Rajad Fenty, visiting Ronald at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center earlier this week. Rihanna herself was believed to be with her brother but has not made any public statements regarding her father's passing. Ronald Fenty and Rihanna had a complicated relationship over the years. The singer publicly described their connection as 'really strange' during a 2011 Vogue interview, reflecting on the emotional challenges they faced. He reportedly struggled with addiction, which contributed to tensions, and he divorced Rihanna's mother when the singer was 14. Despite these difficulties, Rihanna and Ronald reconciled for a time. In a 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Rihanna spoke about separating her father's roles as a parent and husband, acknowledging the positive impact he had on her life. However, the relationship appeared strained again by 2019 when Rihanna sued him over the use of her name in his talent development company. The lawsuit was later dismissed, with both reportedly making amends. Ronald also expressed pride in his role as a grandfather to Rihanna's son, RZA, who was born in May 2022. He shared how Rihanna had brought the child to her home island of Barbados twice and described her as a protective and loving mother. As of now, Rihanna has not publicly addressed her father's death.

Fourth installment of 'Meet the Parents' to star Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande has been confirmed to star opposite Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro in Universal Pictures' upcoming film, Meet the Parents 4. This announcement marks Grande's next major acting role following her Academy Award-nominated performance as Glinda in Wicked. The Meet the Parents franchise, which includes the original 2000 film and its sequels Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers, has been a commercial success, grossing over $1.13 billion worldwide. While plot details for the fourth installment remain undisclosed, producer Jane Rosenthal told Variety that the story will reflect the characters' aging, noting that Stiller's character is now the same age De Niro's was in the first film, with their children grown up and returning home to meet the parents. John Hamburg, who co-wrote the previous three films, has penned the screenplay and is set to direct the new installment. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on November 25, 2026. Production is overseen by a team including Rosenthal and De Niro through Tribeca Productions, Jay Roach through Delirious Media, and Ben Stiller and John Lesher via Red Hour Films, with Hamburg producing through Particular Pictures. Universal's Executive Vice President of production development, Matt Reilly, and Director of production development, Jacqueline Garell, are supervising the project. Grande's casting is seen as a significant addition to the franchise, especially given her ongoing relationship with Universal. She will next appear in Wicked: For Good, the highly anticipated sequel to the Broadway adaptation Wicked, scheduled for release on November 21, 2025. As a music artist, Grande boasts nine Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits and two Grammy Awards from 15 nominations. As an actor, she has earned critical acclaim with nominations from the Oscars, Golden Globes, SAG, and BAFTA.
