European football: Atlético Madrid lose at Espanyol, while Vitinha wins opener for PSG

The Guardian3 days ago
Atlético Madrid started with a 2-1 defeat at Espanyol in La Liga on Sunday as the hosts overturned Julián Alvarez's opener with late goals from substitutes Miguel Rubio and Pere Milla.
Alvarez showed his quality in the 37th minute, curling a superb free-kick into the top corner to give Atlético the lead after Espanyol's Leandro Cabrera had pushed Conor Gallagher.
The Argentinian came close again in the second half when he collected the ball inside the box, skipped past two defenders and fired a shot against the crossbar.
But the hosts levelled in the 73rd minute when a long set-piece dropped into the box behind the defence, allowing Rubio to race on to the ball and slide it past goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Six minutes from time, Milla scored a spectacular winner, meeting a cross with a diving header that arched over Oblak and nestled inside the far post to complete the turnaround.
Athletic Bilbao's Robert Navarro snatched a 3-2 victory over Sevilla after his side had squandered a two-goal lead. Nico Williams' penalty and Maroan Sannadi's strike had the hosts 2-0 ahead at the break, but Dodi Lukébakio and Lucien Agoumé levelled it up, only for Navarro to win it nine minutes from time.
In Ligue 1, Paris St Germain began their title defence with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Nantes thanks to a second-half goal from their Portugal midfielder Vitinha. Fresh from their Super Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur in a shootout on Wednesday, PSG lacked their usual urgency in front of goal, going in at half-time without having carved out any real chances against a disciplined Nantes defence.
PSG eventually broke the deadlock when Vitinha's strike from distance in the 67th minute took a deflection off Nantes defender Chidozie Awaziem and curled into the far corner. Nantes then began to concede more space and PSG thought they had doubled their lead minutes later through Gonçalo Ramos but the striker's effort was ruled out for offside.
Paris FC's first top-flight game in 46 years ended in a 1-0 defeat at Angers, who took an early lead through Esteban Lepaul and held on despite being reduced to 10 men. Lepaul sprinted ahead of defender Timothée Kolodziejczak to reach Jordan Lefort's long ball just outside the box and scored with a calm right-foot finish after nine minutes.
Angers midfielder Louis Mouton was sent off for a late challenge on Kolodziejczak in the 57th minute and Paris FC, who dominated possession and had more than twice as many shots as their opponents, pressed hard for an equaliser.
The hosts survived when Alimami Gory failed to meet Ilan Kebbal's cross in front of goal, while a free-kick from just outside the box was sent wide by forward Mathieu Cafaro in the 90th minute, ending the visitors' hopes of salvaging a draw.
Fellow promoted side Metz also lost 1-0 away at Strasbourg as Joaquín Panichelli scored late, Auxerre secured a 1-0 home win over Lorient thanks to Lassine Sinayoko's strike and Lille lost a two-goal lead in a 3-3 draw at Brest.

Lille's Olivier Giroud scored 11 minutes into his first Ligue 1 game since 2012 and Hákon Arnar Haraldsson made it 2-0 but Kamory Doumbia then scored twice to level. Ngal'ayel Mukau got Lille's third but Julien Le Cardinal equalised.
In Germany, a first-round German Cup match between Schalke and hosts Lokomotiv Leipzig was suspended on Sunday after visiting winger Christopher Antwi-Adjei alleged racial abuse from home fans.
The match, which finished 1-0 to Schalke, was suspended for almost five minutes after Antwi-Adjei informed the referee he was racially abused by spectators. An announcement on the stadium PA was made condemning racist abuse. After the match resumed, the winger was booed repeatedly by the home fans.
Speaking after the match, Antwi-Adjei said: 'I don't want to name the words that were spoken. I'm not the type of person who goes home and cries, but I find it disappointing you still hear this on the pitch these days. I signalled to the linesman that something had happened. It's the least I could do. I'm a normal person. This is not appropriate.'
Antwi-Adjei was born in Germany but has represented Ghana three times at international level. A spokesperson from Lokomotiv Leipzig said the insults could not be verified. 'We have a member of staff sitting exactly where the player was standing. He didn't hear anything. The linesman probably didn't hear anything either,' the spokesperson told Sky Germany.
Lokomotiv Leipzig have previously come under fire for supporter groups with right-wing ideological links. In 2018, the club sacked two youth coaches for taking a picture of a group of young players performing a Nazi salute.

Chelsea line up future move for Brighton star as transfer deal is agreed

Brighton midfielder Julio Enciso is being lined up for a future at Stamford Bridge after agreeing a deal with BlueCo – the group that owns Chelsea and Strasbourg. The 21-year-old had been tipped for big things after announcing himself to Premier League fans with a Puskas Award-nominated strike against Manchester City to help Brighton secure a place in the 2023/24 Europa League. But Enciso struggled to nail down a starting spot on the south coast and spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich, where he racked up two goals and three assists in 13 appearances. Following Ipswich's relegation into the Championship, Enciso made it clear he was keen to explore possible opportunities away from the Amex Stadium, with regular first-team minutes seen as an absolute priority. According to The Athletic, BlueCo have now agreed personal terms with Enciso's camp and the Paraguay international is expected to join up with Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg imminently. However, the report claims Enciso is 'viewed as a long-term Chelsea player' by Todd Boehly's BlueCo consortium, who completed a takeover of the west London giants in 2022. After assuming control of Strasbourg 12 months later, Boehly spoke about the multi-club model providing a route for young talent to force their way into the reckoning at Chelsea. Sky Sports is going full throttle this Premier League season, airing a record-breaking 215 live matches - that's nearly double the usual dose of drama, goals, and post-match meltdowns. 'We can show pathways for our young superstars to get onto the Chelsea pitch while getting them real game-time,' the American billionaire said. Enciso will no doubt be desperate to make an impression in French football with Strasbourg, managed by Liam Rosenior, but the youngster first has to work his way back from knee surgery – which has kept him sidelined since May. The injury meant Enciso did not feature in Brighton's pre-season plans or in the side's 1-1 draw with Fulham last weekend. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Brighton's hierarchy had been in agreement that Enciso would be surplus to requirements for the new season, with Fabian Hurzeler well stocked in midfield. Enciso had just 12 months remaining on his contract with the Seagulls. Speaking to ABC Paraguay in May, Enciso revealed that he was keen to enjoy the summer with his loved ones before determining his future. 'I'll think about what I'm going to do later,' Enciso said at the time. 'I don't know yet what I will do. 'I want to enjoy time with my family and then I'll think about what I'm going to do.' Rangers set to miss out on experienced English Premier League star as Ibrox-linked defender ‘agrees deal with Euro club'

But it looks like one experienced left-back linked with a move to Ibrox will NOT be heading to Glasgow. The 3-1 loss leaves the Gers' ambitions of making a return to European football's top table hanging by a thread. Three of the four defenders who started the match are new signings. Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga and Jayden Meghoma have all arrived at Ibrox on loan this summer. Plenty of other defenders have been linked with a move to Rangers during the transfer window. A deal for Nobel Mendy collapsed and he's now joined Rayo Vallecano from Real Betis. Conor Coady was another name linked but the ex-England star ended up moving to Wrexham instead. It's looking like Alex Moreno will be another name to add to the list of transfer misses. Rangers were one of the clubs said to have expressed an interest in the Aston Villa left-back in a report out of Spain last week. The report said he was a priority target for his former club Betis, with fellow La Liga club Girona also interested. Rangers fans should NEVER have walked out on their team despite Brugge battering And it's the latter of those clubs who look like they've won the race to land 32-year old Moreno, who had a loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season. Foot Mercato reporter Santi Aouna is reporting that Moreno has agreed personal terms with Girona on a contract running until 2027. He says that an agreement between Girona and Aston Villa is close. Rangers added left-back cover in Meghoma from Brentford last Sunday. But boss Martin could look to bolster the position further before the transfer window closes. Jefte looks set to complete a return to Brazil with Palmeiras while Ridvan Yilmaz continues to be heavily linked with a switch back to former club Besiktas. Chelsea agree transfer deal to sell forgotten defender after just 12 months

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sell Renato Veiga to Villarreal, according to reports. Veiga joined Chelsea on a seven-year contract from FC Basel just 12 months ago, for a fee thought to be in the region of £12million. But the versatile defender failed to secure regular playing time under Enzo Maresca and was sent on loan to Serie A giants Juventus in January, where he went on to make 15 appearances in all competitions. Though Veiga did his reputation no harm with a string of assured displays at the heart of Juve's defence, he returned to Stamford Bridge from Turin with his immediate future up in the air earlier this summer. The Blues made it clear they would be unable to guarantee the 22-year-old a regular starting role for the 2025/26 campaign, prompting his camp to begin sounding out potential suitors around Europe. Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan have all been credited with an interest, but Villarreal have asserted themselves as the overwhelming favourites to land the Portugal international – who is comfortable operating at both centre-back and in central midfield. According to Fabrizio Romano, Villarreal's discussions have advanced at a pace in recent days and the La Liga outfit have now struck a deal with both Veiga's camp and Chelsea over a €29.5million (£25.5m) package, including add-ons. It's claimed the deal will include a 'heavy' sell-on clause, with Chelsea set to retain a significant percentage of any future transfer fee should the player be sold on again. The move would see Veiga become Villarreal's club-record signing, surpassing Arnaut Danjuma's €23.5m (£20.4m) switch from Bournemouth four years ago. There had still been six years remaining on Veiga's contract at Stamford Bridge, which he signed upon arrival from Basel. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Veiga was left out of Chelsea's first-team squad for their Club World Cup campaign and it was clear the Portuguese was not a part of Maresca's plans for the season. There was no place for Veiga on the substitutes bench as Chelsea were held to a goalless draw in their opening match of the Premier League season with Crystal Palace. It was only last October that Maresca singled Veiga out for special praise after handing the defender a rare start in Chelsea's Europa Conference League defeat of Panathinaikos. More Trending 'I just said to Renato, he has played already as a centre-back, a full-back, holding midfielder, attacking midfielder,' Maresca told reporters at the time. 'He has already played four or five positions. One of my first press conferences, I said that the reason why I really like and love Chelsea is because many players can be versatile. 'Today, in my idea, if they can play different positions, then it is better for the team and especially for the players. Today, if you just play one position, I don't think it's enough. 'You need to learn more positions. Renato, Malo [Gusto], they are playing in different positions and they are doing well.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
