Malaysia to continue negotiations with US on tariffs, says Anwar

KOTA KINABALU (May 30): Malaysia maintains its stance on negotiation to resolve the issue of tariffs imposed by the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said negotiations are crucial to ensuring strong Malaysia-US bilateral relations, as the US is Malaysia's third-largest trading partner after Singapore and China.
'We live in challenging times where we face significant direct and indirect impacts from the tariffs announced by the US. However, let's look at this positively — we will continue negotiations because the US is a key investor in Malaysia. American investments are among the highest in Malaysia, and we must maintain good relations with them,' he said at the launch of Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd (Esteel) Phase 1 on Friday.
Anwar stressed that Malaysia's position is also important to ensure that any trade agreements or tariffs are fair and comply with international laws.
'I will meet with US officials and also Singaporean President Lawrence Wong to discuss Malaysia-Singapore dialogue, showing that both nations will maintain strong ties as key trading partners,' he explained.
He added that Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had also gone to the US to negotiate, presenting Malaysia's stance alongside ASEAN nations, as well as Korea, Japan, and China, which support bilateral trade relations and oppose unilateral actions.

The wing said Nur Fathiah, a single mother, wanted to join PAS for the sake of her children's future. Nur Fathiah was among 10 candidates who took part in the race for the hotly-contested seat of Batu during GE15. A total of four independent candidates had contested, with the remaining candidates coming from Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional, Pejuang, Warisan and Parti Rakyat Malaysia. Nur Fathiah obtained only 628 votes, behind fellow independent candidate, lawyer-activist Siti Kasim, while P Prabarakan of PKR retained the seat with a comfortable majority of 22,241 votes.

New rules coming after 2 tonnes of African catfish released into lake

(Facebook pic) KUALA LUMPUR : New regulations are to be drafted to control the release of fish, especially invasive species, into public waters. The fisheries department announced the move today following complaints about the release of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) into the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang lake in conjunction with a fishing competition organised by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi). The fisheries department said several mitigation measures were agreed upon after a site visit and discussions with relevant officials. 'The fishing competition's secretariat will install additional hapa nets, provide bins to collect African catfish caught during the competition, and disseminate awareness material while carrying out fishing activities throughout the programme. 'Mardi will ensure compliance with the installation of nets, open the lake to controlled fishing activities, and coordinate the inventory and disposal of alien fish after the programme concludes,' the fisheries department said. It said about 1,300 African catfish, weighing about 1.5kg each or a total of two tonnes were released into the lake on May 29, without any notification or request for advisory services from the Selangor fisheries office. The department said the public should seek technical advice from the state fisheries office before carrying out any fish release activities into public waters.

PM Anwar: Malaysia invites Myanmar conflict groups for dialogue in Kuala Lumpur
SINGAPORE — Malaysia has taken the initiative to invite different groups in the Myanmar conflict for a dialogue in Kuala Lumpur in a bid to find a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. He said the invitation was extended to the groups last month. 'I've started…and I urge my counterparts to send their teams, officials and military personnel intelligence to continue to engage,' he said during a question-and-answer session following his Special Address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, here. When asked about the possibility of elections in Myanmar, Anwar said the immediate priority is to ensure peace, security, and the delivery of humanitarian aid. He noted that ASEAN leaders have continued to push for an extended ceasefire and the protection of all humanitarian aid workers. 'If the elections are fair and more inclusive and do not exclude parties, then of course, we are ready to accept, although (the process) may not be perfect,' he added. Myanmar's State Administration Council (SAC), in March, announced that they will hold a general election either in December this year or January 2026 at the latest, according to international media reports. — BERNAMA
