Dumpsite success may have cost Bhopal top spot in waste remediation
Bhopal: Bhopal earned the second rank nationally in the million-plus cities category of Swachh Survekshan 2025, coming within reach of the number one position. But its landmark success in waste remediation may have inadvertently cost it crucial points. In 2022, the city fully remediated the 37-acre Bhanpur dumpsite, a landfill active for nearly 40 years. Of the total land, 21 acres were repurposed for public use, while 16 acres were converted into green space. Yet in the latest survey cycle, Bhopal was awarded 0% under the "Remediation of Dumpsites" indicator—a dramatic drop from its previous 100% score. Had it got the 100% score in remediation (which BMC got in 2023), Bhopal would have won the top spot beating Ahmedabad by one point. According to Indicator 3.11 of the Swachh Survekshan toolkit, a city that has already completed remediation is eligible for points if it submits details including the total waste remediated, year of completion, and duration of the activity. In contrast, Ahmedabad, which topped the rankings, received full marks in every category, including dumpsite remediation—thanks to active or recently completed projects. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo As per the survey's Indicator 3.11, past remediation can earn points if documented thoroughly. With no comment from BMC, it's unclear if a technicality or documentation gap led to the zero. Either way, Bhopal's success story became the very reason it missed the crown. *** Bhopal vs Ahmedabad 100% in door-to-door waste collection, processing, and cleanliness across zones 95% (Bhopal) vs. 94% (Ahmedabad) in source segregation Remediation of Dumpsites: 0% (Bhopal), 100% (Ahmedabad)
