The market's crypto treasury craze has peaked, Mike Novogratz says
Crypto treasuries have been in full focus this year amid broader bullisness in the space and as companies try and replicate the stunning success of Strategy, which pioneered the idea of a bitcoin treasury.
But one top crytpo bull thinks the trend has already peaked.
Michael Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Digital and an early bitcoin investor, recently addressed this topic when his company reported second-quarter earnings. When asked by an analyst what he expects to see regarding crypto treasuries in the near future, Novogratz revealed that he believes the rush on creating companies with crypto-heavy balance sheets may be over.
"We are seeing a tremendous amount of opportunities there," he stated, referring to the crypto treasury space. "But I think we've probably gone through peak treasury company issuance of new companies."
Novogratz added that he is interested in seeing which existing crypto treasuries become "monsters" in the industry and will thrive when the market becomes oversaturated. "Most of them are offering similar product, and so you'll see them in different tokens, or different mixes of tokens," he said.
Even so, Novogratz made it clear that he has high hopes for the crypto treasury space. He highlighted the impact that Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, has had on the industry as it has prioritized buying and holding bitcoin, stating, "it's probably the single most important player in the bitcoin ecosystem."
Novogratz also flagged newer crypto treasuries, including Fundstrat co-founder Tom Lee's recent ethereum treasury venture, Bitmine Immersion. The firm's tactic mirrors Michael Saylor's Strategy playbook: "accumulating digital assets, raising new capital by issuing debt or equity, and then using proceeds to buy more crypto" in hopes that it spurs growth for the market.
"I think you're gonna continue to see those companies grow, and I think the new companies in those ecosystems will have a harder time getting oxygen," Novogratz said.
He also predicted that as the crypto market evolves, new ecosystems will be formed, creating opportunity for companies. Novogratz highlighted the success with which crypto treasuries have effectively helped expand the market.
"These treasury companies have done an amazing job of bringing people into the crypto tent," he said. "I think they're gonna continue to play a pretty important part."

Tom Lee's Ethereum Treasury BitMine Ups ETH Raise by $20 Billion
Bitmine Immersion is upping its fundraise target for buying more ETH by $20 billion, according to the firm's filing with federal regulators on Tuesday, as it jockeys to maintain its standing as the world's largest Ethereum treasury. The cryptocurrency mining company aims to raise a total of $24.5 billion of its common stock. The announcement marks a dramatic expansion of its common stock sale, for which the company had already made $4.5 billion worth of its shares available to investors. Under the sale, Bitmine Immersion's common stock shares will go for $0.0001 each. It is unclear what percentage of Bitmine's stock sale proceeds will go toward purchasing ETH. A company representative did not immediately reply to Decrypt's request for comment on the matter. Bitmine Immersion's expansion of its common stock sale comes as a growing number of publicly traded firms establish Ethereum treasuries, fueling a resurgence in the cryptocurrency's price. Sharplink Gaming, BitMine and EtherMachine and Bit Digital largely began pivoting to accumulating massive amounts of Ethereum as a corporate strategy to lift shares of their stocks, adapting the playbook of Michael Saylor's software firm Strategy, which is the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin. The companies' holdings could soon account for 10% of all Ethereum in circulation, according to one Standard Chartered analyst. And as publicly traded companies snap up greater amounts of Ethereum, the layer-1 token's price has skyrocketed. Solana Meme Coins Slump as Investors Rotate into ETH & 'Quality-Focused' Altcoins ETH is trading just below $4,500 as of writing time, up 50% in the past month and more than 70% year-to-date. That puts it less than 9% below its all-time high of just above $4,900 hit in November 2021. In a Myriad Linea markets, nearly 80% of participants expect Ethereum to trade over $5,000 by years-end. (Disclosure: Myriad is a prediction market and engagement platform developed by Dastan, parent company of an editorially independent Decrypt.) As the altcoin's value has swelled, so too has Bitmine Immersion's stock. The company's shares were recently trading at $62.05 on Tuesday, up 51% in the past month and up nearly 700% in the year to date.

Airbnb's New Strategy: ‘Aggressively' Add Hotels, Steal Their Guests
Airbnb has long sought to add hotels into its inventory mix, but the dilemma has been how to do so and not become just another online travel agency like or Expedia. Airbnb says it is getting more aggressive in a new strategy to add hotels in markets where most of the short-term rentals are already booked, and to convince more hotel guests to stay in Airbnbs. CEO Brian Chesky told financial analysts last week that Airbnb is "going significantly more aggressively into hotels. We've spent a lot of time looking at hotels as a business. We think it's really compelling." Chesky said the commissions Airbnb receives from hotels are "very, very competitive," adding that the company has engaged in dialogue with hotels around t

Ether, the number two crypto, closes on bitcoin
Ether, which powers the Ethereum blockchain, has in recent weeks abruptly caught up to bitcoin's rally, driven by digital asset treasury companies accruing over 2 million ether since June. Why it matters: In past bull markets, the prices of the world's two biggest cryptocurrencies have made very similar moves, but that correlation broke down quite a bit over the last year. That break was notable. Prior to last year it had looked like all of crypto largely marched in lockstep with bitcoin, raising questions about whether any other project could differentiate itself from the original. But then bitcoin went on a tear with the launch of ETFs in 2024, and also since President Trump began to promise to make the U.S. a leader in crypto. Ether also got an ETF and it also benefits from Trump's policies, but that wasn't showing up in its price. Between the lines: Bitcoin and ether are very different assets: Bitcoin is just money. Ethereum is basically a giant tech company, except it doesn't have a CEO, office or a board. The Ethereum blockchain was built as a platform for decentralized applications, and any and all activity on the blockchain requires some kind of payment in ether. "Several of the biggest narratives that drove Ethereum's 2021 performance had decayed significantly in 2024, such as NFTs, web3, and metaverse," Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital, says. The intrigue: Over the past month, however, ether has benefited from some of the same factors that have been fueling bitcoin. Driving the news: Ether decisively broke the $4,000 price barrier last week, a level it had only touched twice before — briefly — in the past three-plus years. Tuesday morning it was trading at over $4,400. There's been a lot of buying going on. Monday, more than a billion dollars worth of exchange-traded ether products were purchased, according to CoinShares. A record. Such purchases this year have already nearly doubled from last year. What's happening: Certain companies pursuing a cryptocurrency accumulation strategy have started buying piles of ether, led by Bitmine Immersion Technologies (BMNR) and Sharplink Gaming (SBET). The theory of these companies is that they can accrue more cryptocurrency per share over time using financial engineering, without diluting investors. Which means that, hopefully, one purchase of stock will grow its holdings of an underlying cryptocurrency over time. Collectively, these companies are approaching 2% of the total supply under management, with a giant new purchase of 317,000 ether (ETH) announced by Bitmine on Monday. A friendlier SEC also looks likely to approve ether ETFs, earning a small yield for token holders on-chain, which should make the products a bit more attractive to investors. What they're saying: "For years, Ethereum has lived in the shadow of its elder sibling, Bitcoin," Houston Morgan, from multichain investing platform ShapeShift, says. "But that era is ending. ETH is on the cusp of stepping into its own spotlight. Ethereum price action is increasingly driven by its own fundamentals." By the numbers: Bitcoin and ether have seen roughly similar gains since the start of the year, despite ether lagging for most of that period. However, ether has a ways to go to truly catch up. Bitcoin is closing in on 300% in appreciation since the beginning of 2024. Ether is close to doubling its price over the same period. What we're watching: The market has begun to differentiate between the major cryptocurrencies, and despite ether's recent rise, that's expected to continue. In the meantime, ether remains 9% away from setting a new all-time high, but it's risen that much in the last few days.
