Colorado spring game standout stars and surprise player predictions

Yahoo19-04-2025

Here are some of the predictions our staff at Buffaloes Wire has to share heading into Colorado's spring game.
This year's spring game is fascinating to watch because the Buffaloes will be without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter for the first time under head coach Deion Sanders. There are plenty of questions that Saturday's Black & Gold Game should hopefully answer regarding position battles and starting roles.

Every spring seems to have a surprise performance that few saw coming. Two years ago, Coach Prime's first spring game in Boulder, with over 40,000 in attendance, and the debuts of Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter highlighted the afternoon. Last spring, it was the loaded wide receiver room that gave a preview of what was to come in the fall. What will be some of the players to watch closely in this year's game?
Our staff offers some predictions for the spring game below.
Xavier: Julian Lewis shines. While I think Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter will start, that doesn't mean Lewis won't put on a show during the game. Lewis will show a glimpse into the future for the Buffaloes in the spring game with his elite arm talent, for which CU recruited him.
Keep an eye on Tulsa transfer Joseph Williams. If the clips from spring practices have proven anything, it is that Williams is going to be a great option at wide receiver. His 6-foot-2 frame and athleticism should remind Buffs fans of Will Sheppard. I think he shows off his ability at Folsom Field on Saturday and sets a precedent for his 2025 season.

Charlie: For my standout star of Saturday's spring game, I'm going with true sophomore wide receiver Drelon Miller. I think he has a good chance to be Colorado's top offensive weapon in 2025, and Saturday will give him a chance to show off his talents to a national audience. I expect him to line up all over the formations, and that is always fun to watch in a scrimmage-type setting.
I will also be watching the quarterback and linebacker position battles unfold on the field, as they are, in my opinion, the two biggest unknowns when it comes to starters.
Colorado's spring game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. MT at Folsom Stadium. Here is how to watch the Black & Gold spring game on TV or livestream.

Miami Marlins join efforts to restore defaced Jackie Robinson and Minnie Miñoso mural

MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins are joining efforts to restore the defaced mural of baseball legends Jackie Robinson and Minnie Miñoso in Miami's Overtown neighborhood, which was marked with racist graffiti last week. City of Miami Chairwoman Christine King announced Wednesday that she along with the Marlins, Urgent, Inc., Omni Community Redevelopment Agency, Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency and other community activists will lead the restoration at Dorsey Park, where community leaders said a 7-year-old boy first discovered the vandalism last Sunday and asked his mother what the words and the Nazi symbols meant. 'This vile assault was an attack on our values, history, and community,' King said in a statement. 'We are actively working with law enforcement and the public to identify the individual(s) responsible for this intolerable act. However, even in the darkest hours, light finds its way to shine. This is a reminder and testament to the strength of our community, coming together to restore peace, beauty, and pride to this neighborhood.' Police were investigating the incident but have not made any arrests. City workers have since partially covered the murals of Robinson and Miñoso, an Afro-Cuban player, with wooden boards. The murals are along a fence at Dorsey Park, where Negro League teams once played baseball. The Marlins' home ballpark loanDepot park is just a few miles from the park. 'In light of the deeply troubling acts of vandalism at Dorsey Park, the Miami Marlins today proudly stand in solidarity with the City of Miami Chairwoman Christine King, and our local leaders in unequivocally condemning this hateful and racist act,' said Marlins owner Bruce Sherman. 'Dorsey Park is not only a landmark of historical and cultural significance in South Florida — it is a powerful symbol of resilience, pride, and the enduring contributions of trailblazers to the game of baseball." Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 to become the first Black player. Miñoso became the league's first Afro-Latino player and the first Black player for the Chicago White Sox. The murals have been displayed in the park since 2011 and are a collaboration between artists Kyle Holbrook and Kadir Nelson and various community groups. ___ AP MLB:

Transphobic bully Riley Gaines doesn't deserve an apology from Simone Biles

Over the last few days, those involved in the debate over trans participation in sports have experienced a lot of whiplash. Former swimmer, famous internet bully, and sore loser Riley Gaines (who tied for fifth with trans athlete Lia Thomas in one college race and wasn't given the fifth place medal at the ceremony) once again used her online platform to harass a teen girl on June 6. Gaines shared a picture on X of the Minnesota Class AAAA Softball State Champions for 2025, which includes one trans girl, and captioned, "To be expected when your star player is a boy." In response, Simone Biles, an international sports superstar and the most decorated gymnast of all time, called Gaines "truly sick" and a "straight-up sore loser." "You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!!" Biles wrote. "But instead… You bully them… One thing's for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!" Gaines fired back, saying her "take is the least controversial take on the planet" and claiming that Biles was "being a male-apologist at the expense of young girls' dreams." "This is actually so disappointing," she wrote. "It's not my job or the job of any woman to figure out how to include men in our spaces." I wholeheartedly agree. As a woman and a lesbian, I love spaces that are exclusively for women. Unfortunately for Gaines, there are no men involved in the argument around trans girls competing in sports. Fortunately for Gaines, she has a rabid group of social media-obsessed followers who were quick to pounce on Biles. These people have nothing better to do than harass a young Black woman who is standing up for literal children. Eventually, Biles was pressured into apologizing for getting "personal with Riley" and said that "these are sensitive, complicated issues that I truly don't have the answers or solutions to, but I believe it starts with empathy and respect. I was not advocating for policies that compromise fairness in women's sports. My objection is to be singling out children for public scrutiny in ways that feel personal and harmful. Individual athletes—especially kids—should never be the focus of criticism of a flawed system they have no control over. I believe sports organizations have a responsibility to come up with rules supporting inclusion while maintaining fair competition. We all want a future for sport that is fair, inclusive, and respectful." Unsurprisingly, people on the political right are calling Biles "angry," a "bully," and saying she has "fallen from grace." This is typical rhetoric brought up whenever a Black woman speaks out about something or is passionate. In reality, the only bully here is Riley Gaines. In her arguments against Biles, Gaines brought up convicted sexual predator Larry Nassar, a cis man. "All the horrific sexual abuse @Simone_Biles witnessed and spoke out against caused by one man, yet believes women should be forced to strip naked in front of men to validate the man's feelings," Gaines wrote. "You know how many gold medals you'd have if your 'inclusive' dream came true? Zero." In 2021, Biles and several other decorated gymnasts bravely testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the sexual abuse that they, and hundreds of other women and girls, faced at the hands of Nassar, who was a doctor for USA Gymnastics. Biles is unfortunate enough to know the harsh reality of what abuse from men feels like, and she knows it is not comparable to letting teen trans girls compete in girls' sports. Trying to use Nassar's sexual abuse of Biles against her wasn't the only low blow Gaines attempted. Gaines also called out Biles for "body shaming her" in a tweet where Biles told her to "bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male." She replied by saying she's 5'5". If Biles were forced to compete against Gaines in a swimming race, the 5'5" Gaines would have a genetic advantage over the 4'8" Biles. Gaines has more human growth hormone in her body, a drug banned by most sports organizations. By her own rules, does this make Gaines a man? It is also hilariously ironic that Gaines is trying to call out Biles for "body shaming" her when Gaines has made a career out of body-shaming women. She says that Biles' comments come "at the expense of young girls' dreams," but what about young trans girls, young intersex girls, and young girls with hormone imbalances? I know Gaines would say they aren't "real" girls, but she doesn't get to decide. She's not an expert in biology or gender, and she certainly doesn't get to have any say over the life of a teenage girl who lives in a different state from her and has no relation to her. The biological reality of the situation is that Gaines is a bully who loves to target vulnerable teenage girls who happen to be trans because she knows she has a large crowd behind her. In the end, apologizing to people like Gaines isn't going to open them up to listening or discussing the issue; it's only going to empower them. Gaines clearly doesn't have an issue with going low. Taking the high road isn't going to elevate Gaines. It only makes it so that she has tools and abilities that decent people like Biles don't have. In other words, because Gaines is willing to be such a nasty and hateful bully, she has an inherent advantage over other women. If she wants her values to remain consistent, it may be time for her to step away from competing against women on this issue. Mey Rude is a staff writer for Out. The SEC reveals TV windows for Auburn football

The SEC reveals TV windows for Auburn football Mark your calendars! The SEC has officially revealed the TV windows for every Auburn game The football season is almost here, and it is time to begin planning for roadtrips to the Plains and beyond to watch the Auburn Tigers this fall. Weeks after major networks revealed the start times for Auburn's first three games of the season, the SEC has now released the television windows for the remaining nine games on Auburn's schedule to better prepare fans for the season. Auburn's start times are broken down into four categories: early (11 a.m. – noon CT), afternoon (2:30 – 3:30 p.m. CT), night (5 – 7 p.m. CT), and flex (2:30 – 3:30 p.m. CT or 5-7 p.m. CT). Several notable windows are its game with Georgia at home (night), Arkansas on the road (early), and the Iron Bowl against Alabama (flex). Auburn's SEC opener at Oklahoma gets the flex treatment on Sept. 20, with the following week at Texas A&M beginning in the afternoon window at Kyle Field. The Tigers' home opener at Georgia will be under the lights at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with two of their next three games against Missouri and Kentucky being labeled as "flex." The game in-between the Missouri Tigers and Kentucky Wildcats at Arkansas will be an early kick. The next two games, against Vanderbilt in Nashville, and Mercer at home, will kick in the afternoon. Auburn vs. Vanderbilt will begin in the afternoon time frame while the game against Mercer will begin at 1 p.m. CT and will air on SEC Network. Finally, the Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium is flexed. However, as the trend has shown recently, fans can expect the game to kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT. The time and date for Auburn's first three games were revealed last month. Auburn will begin the season in Waco, Texas on Friday, Aug. 29 against the Baylor Bears at 7 p.m. CT on FOX. The next two games, against Ball State and South Alabama, respectively, will kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT and 11:45 a.m. CT.
