Miri MP brings Sarawak Day spirit to the ground with Mobile Service Counter
MIRI (July 17): In conjunction with the upcoming Sarawak Day celebration, Miri MP Chiew Choon Man led a Mobile Service Counter programme at 2020 Café to distribute Sarawak flags and engage with the public.
The programme, held in anticipation of Sarawak Day on July 22, aimed to commemorate the occasion and provide a platform for residents to voice concerns, share suggestions, and highlight local issues with their elected representative.
'This programme is not just about handing out flags. It's about being present with the people – listening to their problems firsthand and responding directly to their needs,' Chiew said in a statement.
He added that the initiative allows him and his team to better understand the community and to deliver relevant advice and assistance on the spot.
According to Chiew, the Mobile Service Counter reflects his commitment to grassroots leadership by bringing parliamentary services directly to the public, regardless of background or location.
'This face-to-face approach builds trust and speeds up the communication process. It also helps us gain a clearer picture of the real-life challenges faced by the people of Miri,' he added.
Meanwhile, Chiew called on Mirians to proudly fly the Sarawak flag on July 22 in celebration of the state's rich heritage and identity.
'Let us instil the spirit of patriotism and unity, especially among the younger generation, so that the love for our homeland remains strong,' he said.
He also disclosed that he and his team will continue to organise similar outreach programmes across various locations including residential areas, markets, coffeeshops, and villages to ensure that no voice in Miri goes unheard.
'As public servants, we must always stay close to the people and work together for a future that is inclusive, just, and prosperous for all,' he said. Chiew Choon Man miri mobile service counter sarawak day Sarawak flags

Student Integration Plan for Unity key to fostering unity in S'wak schools, says Dr Rundi
Dr Rundi speaks during the programme at SK Batu Tellingai. – Ukas photo BINTULU (Aug 20): The implementation of the Student Integration Plan for Unity (Rimup) in primary schools across Sarawak is a vital step towards fostering unity, harmony, and cooperation among pupils of different racial and cultural backgrounds, said Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom. The State Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development said such initiatives not only strengthen relationships between students, teachers, and the local community but also help nurture a quality generation capable of driving the state's progress. 'We must work together, and we need strong unity. Parents also play an important role in ensuring their children are well-educated, not only in academics but also in discipline and character,' Dr Rundi when officiating the Harmony Inspiration with Leaders programme at SK Batu Tellingai, Suai, on Tuesday. According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, the Kemena assemblyman stressed that human capital development must remain the foundation of progress, adding that quality education and character building are essential to ensure society can keep pace with rapid national development. Reflecting on SK Batu Tellingai's transformation over his five terms as assemblyman, he credited the close cooperation between parents, the school, and pupils as the driving force behind its continuous success. 'Achieving success is not difficult, but sustaining it is not easy,' he said. Dr Rundi also highlighted a Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) initiative which will provide free tertiary education at Sarawak-owned universities beginning next year, particularly benefitting students pursuing technical and STEM-related fields with high employability. He further urged parents to remain vigilant of their children's school participation and to keep them away from negative social influences. 'I hope Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) and parents will continue supporting schools to ensure our children succeed and become valuable assets to the state in the future,' he added. Also present were Bintulu Resident Datu Nyurak Keti, Sebauh District officer Thadeus Ling Bartholomew Allu, SK Batu Tellingai headmaster Bakir Jatan, and PTA chairman Tuai Rumah Bakom Ligong. PKR man mocks loose coalition led by PN
Sungai Petani MP Taufiq Johari said the addition of smaller parties is not likely to make PAS 'more palatable to our friends in Sabah and Sarawak'. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : PKR's Taufiq Johari has mocked plans by parties outside the government bloc for the formation of a loose coalition to hold the administration accountable and highlight issues affecting the people. In a statement, Taufiq said a closer look at its composition showed that apart from PAS and Bersatu, the group would comprise 'parties with little to no representation'. The coalition, according to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, will also consist of Gerakan, Pejuang, Muda, the Malaysian Indian People's Party, Putra, Berjasa, Urimai, the Malaysian Advancement Party, and the National Indian Muslim Alliance Party. 'This then raises the question of whether it is a real representative collaboration or a desperate gamble by parties who are on the fringe,' he said. The Sungai Petani MP also asked if the coalition would see a reversal of fortunes by parties who have been losing their deposits. 'Nor do I think that adding the smaller parties will make PAS more palatable to our friends in Sabah and Sarawak,' he said. Nevertheless, he said he looked forward to seeing the parties involved explain the collaboration to their hardcore supporters. 'It will be interesting to see what they have in common besides wanting to quarrel with the Madani administration.' Muhyiddin announced the loose coalition after chairing a meeting with the parties involved last night. He said the coalition, whose name would be revealed later, would not be a formally registered political bloc. It would however allow the opposition to bring together party leaders, even those outside Perikatan Nasional, to discuss key issues and propose solutions to help the people, he said.

Nanta: Bukit Song viaduct project set for earlier completion next month
Nanta leads the inspection of the Bukit Song viaduct project site. – Screengrab via Facebook/Alexander Nanta Linggi KUCHING (Aug 18): The construction of the 300-metre Bukit Song viaduct under Work Package Contract (WPC) 11 of the Pan Borneo Highway (PBH) Sarawak project is expected to be completed earlier than scheduled, said Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The Works Minister said the viaduct, originally scheduled for completion in October, is now targeted to be ready by next month. 'I am very excited and pleased with the progress of the Bukit Song viaduct construction, which is expected to be completed ahead of schedule. 'Once ready, it will mark the full completion of the highway in its entirety for all PBH users in Sarawak,' he said in a post on Facebook. Nanta, who is Kapit MP, had earlier visited the project site where he was briefed on the construction of the Bukit Song viaduct. He explained that the viaduct had to be constructed as the area was unsuitable for embankment works due to soil movement. 'This had caused some delays to the overall construction of PBH Sarawak,' he said, adding that WPC 11 is the final package of the 11 work packages under the PBH Sarawak project. During his visit, Nanta also inspected the 4.2km road upgrading works and the replacement of old Laku water pipes (now under Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd) in the area. He said the pipe replacement works were necessary following previous pipe bursts before construction began. 'Although there was some delay, these additional works are crucial to ensure that water supply in Miri city will not be affected and that new roads that will be built later will not be at risk of damage in the future,' he said. Nanta also called on the Ministry of Works, through the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, to ensure that there is continuous engagement between the project teams and contractors, as well as to regularly carry out strict monitoring to ensure smooth progress and timely delivery of the project. alexander nanta linggi Bukit Song lead Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak viaduct
