India's Ramsar Site tally touches 91 as two more Rajasthan wetlands gain recognition
On the eve of World Environment Day, India on Wednesday added two more wetlands—Khichan in Phalodi and Menar in Udaipur—to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance . With these additions, India's total count of Ramsar Sites now stands at 91.
Bhupender Yadav, Union Cabinet Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Lok Sabha MP from Alwar announced the news on X (formerly Twitter). 'This achievement is yet another testament to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji's steadfast commitment to environmental conservation,' Yadav wrote on X. 'Congratulations, India—especially the people of Rajasthan—for this significant step towards a greener tomorrow.'

What are wetlands?

Wetlands also support local economies through agriculture, fishing, and tourism, and they play an integral role in maintaining the water cycle and storing carbon, thereby helping to combat climate change.
A Ramsar Site is a wetland designated as being of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The convention aims to ensure the conservation and wise use of wetlands to maintain their ecological character and benefits for current and future generations.
Sites awarded Ramsar status are recognised globally for their environmental, economic, and cultural value.

Speaking on this year's theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution and Deforestation', Tekade painted a grim picture of plastic misuse and its growing impact on both urban and forest ecosystems. He pointed out that Nagpur generates over 1,100 tonnes of municipal waste daily, of which nearly 90 tonnes is plastic, much of it non-recyclable. He cited disturbing examples of plastic being found in the stomachs of cows and wildlife deaths due to plastic ingestion. "We have turned our cities into plastic jungles," he said, urging people to change their habits before nature reaches a point of no return. He also warned against burning plastic, which emits harmful toxins linked to cancer and respiratory diseases. On air pollution, Tekade shared a sobering statistic over 12 lakh deaths occur annually in India due to air pollution. Canadian thaw! Mark Carney invites PM Modi for G7 meet
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that he will be attending the G7 Summit later this month in Canada following a phone call from newly elected PM Mark Carney , signalling an improvement in bilateral ties following the changing of the guard in the North American country. The summit will be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15-17. It will be Modi's maiden engagement abroad since Operation Sindoor, presenting him with an opportunity to highlight the menace of cross-border terrorism at a global forum. In a post on X, Modi wrote, "Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month." He added India and Canada, as "vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties", would work together "with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests". The visit is expected to mark the beginning of improvement in ties, which were hit by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's "pro-Khalistan policies", said experts. During the summit, Modi could meet other G7 leaders - from the US, UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany - including US President Donald Trump. This year's summit is especially significant as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the G7.
